Chapter 67 - Chapter 67: The Ruin Beneath the Battlefield

The Southern Route

Kael spent the remainder of the night bent over Angelika's map, tracing the supply column's slow, deliberate path again and again until the pattern refused to resolve into anything but the single, unsettling conclusion he'd already suspected.

"It doesn't curve around Thornrock by accident," he said, when Angelika finally joined him, exhaustion plain on both their faces after a night neither had properly slept through. "Every previous army we've faced moved to conquer ground, or to break a wall standing in their way. This column ignores our walls entirely."

Angelika traced the route herself, her finger stopping at a marking so old and faint she'd nearly dismissed it weeks earlier as an unremarkable ridge formation. "They're going somewhere specific," she said slowly. "Here. South of the valley, past ground we've never properly explored."

"And whatever's sealed in those six containers," Kael said, "needs to reach that exact place."

The Argument Kael Lost, Then Won

He informed the council of his intent to lead the reconnaissance himself, and the objection came immediately, sharp and unanimous.

"You're the one person Thornrock cannot afford to lose," Angelika said flatly, refusing to soften the point for anyone's comfort. "Send Dane. Send Elara. Send anyone whose absence doesn't leave this entire alliance rudderless if something goes wrong."

"Exactly why I need to go myself," Kael said. "The System's warnings, the hydra's fear, the way my own ring reacts every time these ancient blood signatures draw close — none of that is behaving like an ordinary threat, Angelika. If I send someone else to look at it and they come back with only half an answer, I still won't understand what we're actually fighting. I need to see it myself."

She held his gaze a long moment, torn between the strategist's caution and the plain, undeniable truth of his reasoning. Finally, she exhaled slowly. "Then you don't go alone."

"I wasn't planning to."

What Waited in the Southern Valley

Kael took only the hydra and four of Harlan's quietest riders, moving south under cover of predawn dark until the terrain finally opened into a hidden valley none of Titanblood's maps had ever properly charted.

The ruin rose from the valley floor like something the earth itself had tried, imperfectly, to swallow — broken pillars leaning at impossible angles, ancient symbols carved deep into stone weathered but never fully erased, and at the structure's center, a set of massive stone doors easily three times the height of the throne room's own sealed entrance beneath Thornrock.

Strange dark veins traced the ground near the ruin's base, spreading outward from the doors like something had once seeped slowly into the earth and never fully withdrawn.

The hydra stopped the moment its eyes settled on the doors, its entire body going rigid.

*I have seen this place,* it said quietly.

"When?" Kael asked.

*Before I remember myself,* the hydra answered, offering nothing further, its gaze fixed and unblinking on the ancient stone.

What the Containers Truly Held

They took position among the ruin's outer rubble, hidden well enough that the arriving enemy column passed within a hundred paces without a single soldier glancing their way.

The six sealed containers were carried to the ruin's center with a care that bordered on reverence, soldiers setting them down in a precise circle around the ancient doors before withdrawing several careful steps.

Then, from within one of the containers, something struck the wood from inside with enough force to rock the entire structure.

*Boom.*

A second container answered, the same violent impact echoing across the valley.

*Boom.*

The soldiers surrounding the circle shifted instantly into a defensive formation, weapons raised not outward toward any visible threat, but inward, toward the containers themselves.

Kael watched the reaction settle into place with cold understanding.

"They're afraid of what's inside," he murmured.

The Ritual

The three ancient blood warriors approached the containers together, moving with the same unhurried, unnatural calm that had marked every previous appearance since Kael first glimpsed them on a distant ridge.

One knelt before the nearest container and pressed a bare palm against its iron-banded surface. Blood, dark and thick, welled slowly from beneath his hand, seeping into the wood where it met an ancient seal carved faint but unmistakable into the container's surface.

Kael's ring flared instantly, the System's warning cutting sharp across his vision.

*[Ancient Blood Synchronization Detected]*

*[Seal Response: Positive]*

*[Containment Integrity: 88% → 79%]*

He watched, frozen, as understanding settled into place with a weight that made his stomach turn cold.

They weren't breaking the seal by force.

They were unlocking it, deliberately, one careful drop of blood at a time.

The Door Answers

The massive stone doors at the ruin's center began to glow, faint crimson light tracing the same ancient symbols that marked every ruin Kael had explored since the season first turned strange enough to matter more than tribal war.

Six containers. Three ancient blood users. A door that had waited, sealed, for longer than any tribe still living could properly measure.

*A ritual,* Kael thought, the shape of it finally, fully clear.

Before he could turn the realization over further, his ring flared again, sharper this time, and a new message resolved across his vision with a clarity that stole the breath from his chest.

*[Ancient Bloodline Recognition]*

*[Foreign Bloodline Detected]*

*[Compatibility: 13%]*

Kael stared at his own hand, understanding arriving in a rush that left him momentarily unable to speak. His bloodline. His own blood, however faint or diluted, registered as part of this same ancient system — the throne room, the signet, the synchronization that had climbed slowly across every encounter since he first descended beneath Thornrock's gate.

*That's why the King knew my name,* he thought, the pieces finally, terribly aligning.

The Decision

"We should go back," Angelika's voice reached him through his own racing thoughts, one of Harlan's riders relaying her earlier instruction through careful hand signals even from this distance.

"No," Kael said quietly, though only the hydra was close enough to hear him.

*Why not,* it asked.

He kept his eyes fixed on the glowing door, on the slow, deliberate ritual unfolding before him.

"Because now I know what they're opening." He paused, the weight of the next realization settling heavier than anything the war had asked of him so far. "And I think I know why they needed me alive."

What Breathed Beneath the Stone

The sound came from deep within the ruin itself, rolling up through solid rock with a force that made the ground beneath Kael's feet tremble.

Not a roar. Not a voice.

Something breathing.

*THUM.*

The earth shook, dust sifting loose from the ancient pillars overhead.

*THUM.*

All six containers shuddered in unison, their combined impact echoing across the valley like a single, massive heartbeat finally remembering how to beat.

The System flared bright and urgent across Kael's vision.

*[Ancient Entity: Awakening]*

*[Containment Integrity: 79% → 72%]*

*[Warning: External Bloodline Required]*

Kael's face drained of color. "External bloodline," he whispered.

The System offered its final, damning line without hesitation.

*[Required Bloodline: Titanblood]*

He looked down slowly at his own hand, at the ring still warm and pulsing faintly against his finger, understanding settling into place with a dread that ran considerably deeper than any battle this season had prepared him to face.

The hydra's voice, when it finally spoke, carried none of its usual measured calm.

*They didn't bring it here to release it,* it said quietly.

"Then why," Kael asked, though some cold, certain part of him had already begun to suspect the answer.

All three of the hydra's heads turned together, slow and absolute, toward the glowing ancient door.

*To make it recognize you.*
