Chapter 3 - Getting the Gist of the World

The hospital was not far from the scene of the accident. They made it to the hospital by hailing a horse-drawn carriage.

They stepped down from the carriage and Anna paid the fare using the money they received from the coach driver.

He looked around as he took in the scene. It was really a medieval-esque setting. He still couldn't believe that he had been reborn as a new person in a different world with a conveniently the same name as him.

He had no families in his world as they all perished due to natural causes, he didn't even have a partner as he was busy building his business empire and chasing accolades, glory, and recognition. Well, perhaps in this world, he could take it easy, and enjoy life.

"Let's enter the hospital brother, there are healers inside that can take care of that wound."

Simon followed his little sister inside a three-storey building medieval-building. Based on the architectural design, it seems similar to medieval buildings in Germany where he had visited five years ago.

Inside was a reception table where a lady with a pleasing smile acknowledged their arrival.

"Good morning, to Thule's Hospital. What can I do for you?"

"My brother here got into an accident and hit his head," Anna explained, gesturing to Simon who was standing behind her.

The receptionist looked at Simon's temple and saw dried blood with some matting on his hair.

"It looked bad but don't worry, our healer is on duty. Please proceed to the second floor. The room would be on the left side, second door."

"Thank you," Anna said and beckoned Simon to follow her.

Simon followed her while examining the inside of a hospital. It didn't smell like antiseptic which hospitals usually smell like but he'd give it a five as it looked decent. He had watched one of the reels on how bad medieval hospitals looked like.

Perhaps a different world with an existence of magic, magic plays a key role in the civilization here.

They reached the second floor via stairs and just as the instructions said, proceeded to the second door to the left.

Anna knocked at the door and seconds later, a feminine voice answered.

"Come in."

They entered the room upon those words and there inside looked like a clinic, a female doctor who seemed to be in her early twenties with charming looks and a pink hair that goes down to her shoulders. She was sitting behind a desk with a warm smile.

"Please take a seat," the doctor gestured to the two vacant chairs.

Simon and Anna took their seats and prepared themselves for whatever was to come.

"So, I believe it's this man over here," said the doctor who looked at his injured head.

"The coach driver caused it. He was speeding and putting lives ahead of him in danger. The carriage hit his head which caused him to fall hard to the ground and he was unconscious for minutes! Please doctor, save my brother. I don't know what to do if I lose him."

Simon glanced at Anna, the way she put it was slightly embarrassing. Turns out, according to the memory of the original Simon, his little sister just acts so affectionate towards him that she always clings to him.

"My my…don't worry, you have come to the right place. Looking at his injuries and the state he is now in, I'd say it's not that serious. But we can't be too careful as an injury in the head is dangerous. There are circumstances where a patient with head trauma died a few days after the incident. Turns out, they were bleeding inside."

"Gi-guk," Anna gulped a mouthful of saliva.

The doctor giggled and leaned over the table as she reached out to Simon's forehead.

"Let me see…"

Simon was a bit confused as to why she'd want to touch his injury. Is that how doctors do their diagnosis in this world?

Seconds later, a warm-sensation enveloped the area of his injuries, and slowly, he could feel the pain that was lingering since the accident disappearing slowly.

And what's more, her hand was glowing. That must be the one tending his injury. But how? Is this what they call magic?

Seconds later, she sat back.

"Okay, we're done."

That's it?

Simon touched where the injury was and there, there was no lump of the wound or the throbbing pain that occurs when he touched it. It was as if the injury never happened.

"What did you do?" Simon asked with a flabbergasted tone.

"I conducted healing magic on your injuries. You should be fine now," said the doctor.

"Healing magic," Simon repeated those words as if etching it to his mind. Magic, what an incredible force of nature in this world. He needs to know more about it, like how it works and how it can be used. Based on his memories, magic is a fundamental force in the world that a person could interact with through the use of mana.

But not everyone has mana, and those who don't have it can't wield magic. As for him, he does have mana, but his magic aptitude was low. The reason? Family background.

Simon Riley in this world is the son of a baronet, the lowest social status in the Kingdom of Lagendia. And lower nobility are often in the range of middle-class to poor.

Good thing their family was middle-class and was able to send him and Anna to a preparatory school teaching trade, history, magic, arithmetic, and other basic subjects.

And as he was looking deeper into his memory, he now knew the reason why he and Anna were out earlier, she was helping him looking for a job, and he had one, as a librarian in the capital city.

"That would be 1,000 kinah!"

Those words snapped him back to reality.

"1,000 kinah?!" Anna was shocked to hear those numbers.

Simon raised a brow, 1,000 kinah. He doesn't know if it's expensive or not but he searched his memories all related to currency and their value.

In this world, kinah is the name of the currency, there are three denominations. Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Bronze is the lowest denomination. 100 copper coins is equal to 1 silver. 100 silver is equivalent to 1 gold coin or 10,000 copper coins. 1 bronze coin is equal to 1 kinah.

And using the salary that was posted as a novice librarian in the capital city, which is about 600 kinah per month, that's like more than half of his monthly salary for a doctor.

So it's like the United States here huh?

"So, how would you like to pay?" asked the doctor.

"Uhm…here," Anna placed the leather pouch on the table. "There's only 3 silver and 50 copper coins inside. I promise to pay the balance once we return home and inform our parents."

The doctor smiled. "That's a good arrangement. Let's sign some papers so I have a guarantee you'll pay. Your brother is an adult right now right? He can sign papers."

That's right, in this world, 15 years old is the age of adulthood. Their parents could definitely afford to pay the remaining balance so he's not scared of signing a promissory note or anything.

The doctor pulled out a parchment from the drawer of her table and set it on.

"What's your name?"

"Simon Riley."

"I, Simon Riley, promise to pay the remaining balance of 250 kinah for the service rendered by Thule's Hospital," the doctor dictated smoothly as she dipped her quill into ink and continued. "to be paid within seven days from this date."

She turned the parchment toward him.

"Please sign here."

Anna looked anxious.

"Brother, is that okay?"

Simon scanned the document carefully.

Jarvis overlaid text clarity enhancement.

[No hidden clauses detected.]

[Standard service debt language.]

He picked up the quill and signed the parchment.

The doctor blew lightly on the ink to dry it.

"Very good," she said pleasantly. "You may pay the remaining 250 kinah at the reception desk anytime within a week."

Anna let out a relieved breath.

"Thank you, doctor."

The doctor tilted her head slightly.

Simon leaned back slightly in his chair.

"May I ask how it works? The healing magic, if you don't mind."

The doctor smiled with amusement.

"Curious type, aren't you?"

"You could say that."

She folded her hands on the desk.

"Healing magic accelerates the body's natural regenerative process. We channel mana into the affected tissues. It stimulates cellular repair and stabilizes damaged blood vessels."

Jarvis immediately analyzed.

[Biological regeneration acceleration hypothesis.]

[Mana acting as external energy catalyst for mitosis and vascular repair.]

"Does it repair everything?" Simon asked.

The doctor shook her head.

"No. Severe trauma, lost limbs, destroyed organs, those require advanced healers. I specialize in minor to moderate injuries."

"Does it cost the same for everyone?" Simon continued.

Anna nudged him lightly.

"Brother, don't interrogate the doctor."

The doctor chuckled.

"It depends on mana expenditure, the difficulty of the process, and the severity of the injuries."

"I see, well thank you doctor."

He rose to his feet and offered a handshake.

The doctor did the same, and she has short stature. He has a height of 5 foot and eight inches. She might be below five feet as she was only below his shoulder. As for his little sister, it looked the same.

They shook their hands. After that, they left the room.

Outside the Thule Hospital, he could see the sky turning orange, signaling that night might come soon.

"How do you feel brother?" she looked up to him as she asked.

"Never been better," Simon replied confidently and then his stomach growled.

Anna giggled. "It seems that you are hungry brother…We still have some money left so how about we grab a snack before returning home? There's a crepe stand in the market square! They say it's delicious! I want to try it!"

She's so energetic.

"Okay," Simon simply agreed. He wanted to explore his new world.
