The wind on the upper ridge was freezing, carrying the sharp, iron stench of burning flesh and frozen ash. Princess Vaelora pushed her exhausted Luminar horse up a narrow, jagged ledge that overlooked the entire valley of Solthera. Her dragon-scale armor was cracked at the shoulder, stained with the dark blood of the shadow-guards she had cut down. Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps as the heavy gold crown hummed on her brow, its protective barrier flickering under the strain of the surrounding dark magic.
At a sharp bend in the mountain path, the terrain opened up, offering a devastating, panoramic view of the battlefield below. Vaelora reined in her starlight horse, her eyes widening as she looked down at the horror unfolding across the burning plains.
To her right, beneath the shattered ivory archway near the front gates, her gaze locked onto a hollow clearing. There lay the discarded, heavy golden armor of King Aetheron and the broad shield of Lord Kaelor Draven. They were completely empty. The silver-blue embers of their physical forms had already drifted away into the dark storm clouds, leaving behind only the cold metal they had worn into battle.
A sharp, physical pain pierced Vaelora's chest. Her biological father, the King who had carried the weight of the realm, and Lord Kaelor, the man who had hidden her, raised her, and taught her how to wield her magic like a true warrior—both were gone. She hadn't even had the chance to say goodbye. The two pillars of her life had vanished into the wind, leaving her to face the darkness alone.
"Father..." she whispered, a single hot tear cutting through the soot on her pale cheek. "Lord Kaelor..."
But before she could even process the crushing weight of her grief, a desperate clash of steel from the lower valley drew her eyes to the center of the melee.
Through the shifting fog and the midnight-blue banners of the Lysvaen legion, Vaelora saw a lone silver stallion surrounded by a dense, swirling vortex of Tharzakir axes and Zhalver spears. It was Lady Seraphine.
Seraphine was fighting on pure instinct now, her armor shattered, her legendary dual-bladed glaive broken in half. Yet, she refused to fall. She wielded the remaining half of her blade like a dagger, cutting down three attackers who tried to pull her from her mount. But the numbers were too overwhelming. A heavy black spear pierced through her side, followed by a brutal axe strike to her shoulder.
"NO!"
Vaelora screamed from the mountain ledge, her voice tearing from her throat. She stretched her hand out toward the valley, as if she could reach across the vast distance to save her foster mother.
"MOM!"
Down below, as if hearing her daughter's desperate cry across the wind, Lady Seraphine used the last ounce of her strength to push her attackers back. She looked up toward the high ridge, her bloodied face softening into a serene, beautiful smile as her eyes locked onto the glowing silhouette of Vaelora standing against the sky.
Seraphine's lips moved, sending a final, silent blessing into the wind: Live, my sweet girl. Go.
The dark soldiers closed in, but before their blades could strike her again, the ancient Drazhin law claimed its own. Seraphine's physical form began to fracture into brilliant, luminous white and silver embers. Slowly, gracefully, her body dissolved into thick ribbons of radiant smoke, rising from the center of the dark swarm and lifting up into the sky toward the silver-blue clouds where her husband, Kaelor, and King Aetheron had gone before her. Her empty armor collapsed into the mud, a silent monument to her ultimate sacrifice.
Vaelora fell to her knees on the cold stone of the ridge, her daggers slipping from her trembling hands. Within the span of a single hour, the elders who had protected her from the cradle to the throne had been reduced to ash and smoke.
But as the tears streamed down her face, a sudden, blinding flash of blue fire erupted from the very top of the peak, shaking the mountain foundations.
Azeal.
The realization hit her like a lightning bolt. She wasn't entirely alone. The love of her life, the prince who had walked through the depths of the Shadow Abyss just to keep her safe, was up there, bleeding and fighting a madman. She had lost her father, she had lost Kaelor, and she had just watched Seraphine dissolve into the wind—she refused to let the darkness take Azeal too.
Her grief instantly transformed into a fierce, unyielding protective fury. She picked up her Midnight Daggers, her grip tightening until her knuckles turned white. Looking up at the burning summit, her eyes flashed with royal gold light. She was going to climb that mountain, she was going to unleash every ounce of magic in her veins, and she would do whatever it took to save her prince.
