Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: Tony’s Life Hangs by a Thread

"Therefore," Obadiah Stane concluded, hands resting firmly on the conference table, "I propose removing Tony Stark from the position of CEO. His reckless decisions have destabilized Stark Industries' stock value, strained our military contracts, and damaged the confidence of our government partners."

Murmurs rippled through the boardroom.

"We built this company on defense technology," Obadiah continued. "Weapons manufacturing is not a liability — it is our foundation. Restore that division, and Stark Industries will return to record profitability."

He spread his arms confidently.

"Ladies and gentlemen… I ask for your support. Let us return Stark Industries to strength."

A few directors nodded immediately.

Others pretended to deliberate.

Karl nearly laughed.

The performance was theatrical — the votes had already been secured.

"I agree."

"I support Mr. Stane."

"Seconded."

One after another, voices aligned in Obadiah's favor.

A satisfied smile spread across his face.

"Excellent," he declared. "Effective immediately, I will assume the position of CEO of Stark Industries and restore weapons production."

"I disagree."

The conference room doors swung open.

The voice was unmistakable.

Tony Stark.

Karl's lips curved slightly.

Obadiah's expression darkened at once.

Tony strode inside, sunglasses in place, radiating defiance.

"Hey, Karl," Tony said casually, ignoring Obadiah completely. "You're really just sitting there watching this circus?"

"I'm giving you the opportunity," Karl replied lightly.

Tony smirked.

Then his tone hardened.

"Effective immediately, Obadiah Stane is removed from all executive authority at Stark Industries."

Shock rippled through the room.

Several directors sat upright.

Obadiah's eyes narrowed.

"You do not control a majority of shares," he said coldly. "You cannot enforce that decision."

Tony turned slowly.

"Oh? Let's do the math."

He began counting on his fingers.

"I hold forty-five percent after acquiring shares from departing board members."

He gestured toward Karl.

"Mr. Zhang holds eight percent."

Tony smiled.

"That gives us a controlling majority."

He looked directly at Karl.

"Do you agree?"

Karl leaned back, raising an eyebrow.

"Of course. The math checks out."

Silence.

Then the room shifted.

Directors who moments ago supported Obadiah suddenly reconsidered their positions.

Votes realigned.

Corporate survival instincts prevailed.

Obadiah's control evaporated in seconds.

"You… you all…" he muttered.

He turned and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

Tony exhaled.

Karl chuckled softly.

The coup had failed.

Earlier — Stark Tower Offices

Following Tony's instructions, Pepper Potts slipped into Obadiah's office.

Her hands trembled slightly as she inserted Tony's flash drive.

Within seconds, Stark's custom intrusion software bypassed the firewall.

Encrypted folders unlocked.

Financial ledgers.

Off-book weapons shipments.

Private communications.

Then a video file.

Pepper clicked it.

Grainy footage appeared — Ten Rings militants speaking to the camera.

They addressed Obadiah directly.

They had discovered Tony Stark was the target.

They demanded additional payment.

Pepper covered her mouth in horror.

Next:

Arms transactions across multiple conflict zones.

Black-market routing channels.

Unauthorized Stark weapons deployments.

Then:

A massive armored weapons platform blueprint.

Industrial fabrication progress: 78% complete.

Pepper's pulse raced.

Obadiah wasn't just selling weapons.

He was building his own war machine.

She copied everything onto the drive and exited before he returned.

Obadiah's Realization

When Obadiah returned to his office, he knew immediately.

Access logs.

System timestamps.

Files opened.

Only one person could have breached Stark encryption protocols.

Tony.

His jaw tightened.

The situation had escalated beyond corporate maneuvering.

If Tony lived…

everything collapsed.

There was still one path left.

The arc reactor.

Power.

Control.

He drove straight to Tony's mansion.

Tony's Mansion

Tony paced the living room while on the phone with Pepper.

Her voice shook with urgency.

"Tony, listen carefully. Obadiah ordered the attack in Afghanistan. He planned to have you killed. The terrorists only kept you alive when they realized who you were."

Tony froze.

The words refused to process.

"That's not possible…"

Pepper continued.

"He's been selling weapons to terrorist groups for years. And he's building a massive armored suit in the fabrication plant."

Tony's breath became shallow.

Obadiah.

His father's partner.

His guardian.

Family.

"…Tony?"

Pepper's voice sounded distant now.

The world tilted.

Behind him, unseen and silent, Obadiah entered the house.

A device in his hand pulsed with blue energy.

Tony turned—

Pain exploded through his chest.

The phone slipped from his grasp.

His body locked in place.

He collapsed, paralyzed, gasping for air.

The arc reactor in his chest flickered violently.

Obadiah stepped into view.

Cold.

Unrecognizable.

"I built this company," he said quietly. "And you were going to destroy it."

He knelt beside Tony and reached toward the glowing reactor embedded in his chest.

"And now… I'm taking back what belongs to me."

Tony's vision blurred.

Air would not come.

His heart pounded against failing light.

Life hung by a thread.
