The Fire Rat burst out of the ground again, but the moment it saw Fugaku floating in midair, it dove right back underground.
Fugaku knew he couldn't stay airborne forever.
This wasn't the Land of Fire anymore. They were deep in the Land of Wind — nothing but endless desert.
No trees. No cover. Nowhere to escape the ground.
"Insane fire resistance and the ability to move freely underground… it completely counters my fighting style. My strength should be higher than its, but because of that surprise attack…"
"Now I'm injured…"
"How the hell am I supposed to win this?"
Fugaku's head was pounding.
Fortunately, the rest of the Leaf forces were making solid progress. The Sunagakure army was steadily retreating, and the Fire Rat's attacks on him had slowed down.
Fugaku finally caught his breath.
The Leaf shinobi were fired up.
"Sunagakure's forces are breaking! They're running!"

Many Leaf shinobi had been itching for an all-out war against Sunagakure. They were confident they would win.
They still believed Konoha was stronger overall. No matter how powerful Rasa was personally, he couldn't carry his entire village.
The idea that Sunagakure had grown strong was something many of them simply refused to accept.
But once real fighting broke out, they realized the truth.
Sunagakure was far stronger than they had expected.
Even though Konoha had the numbers and Sunagakure was fighting both Konoha and Iwagakure at the same time, Sand's mid-tier and elite fighters were clearly superior.
Hundreds of Devil Fruits had turned their chunin into special jonin.
Jiraiya had been crippled by Rasa.
Orochimaru was being held back by Pakura.
And now superior Devil Fruits were appearing on the battlefield…
This time Konoha had sent a large number of reinforcements. Even though Fugaku had performed poorly and gotten wrecked by the Fire Rat, the Leaf forces had still gained a solid advantage.

Yet Orochimaru noticed the Sand forces kept steering toward one specific route — almost as if they were deliberately trying to lure the Leaf army somewhere.
"A trap?"
A Hyuga scout appeared in front of Orochimaru.
"Did you see anything ahead?"
"Nothing, Lord Orochimaru."
"What about underground?"
"Nothing there either."
The Hyuga's answer eased Orochimaru's suspicions slightly. The Byakugan didn't lie.
"Pass the order. Keep pursuing!"

Meanwhile, a large Iwagakure force quietly left their original position and circled around, heading straight toward the battlefield where Konoha and Sunagakure were fighting.
Kitsuchi led them personally.
Just a short while ago, Kitsuchi had received intel from his spies: Konoha had gained the upper hand and Sunagakure was retreating. Konoha had pulled a large number of shinobi from the village to reinforce the front lines, and Sunagakure clearly hadn't been prepared.
Kitsuchi sent out scouts to confirm. The reports matched.
So he made a decision.
He would steal the victory that should have belonged to Konoha.
The direction the Sunagakure forces were retreating gave Iwagakure the perfect chance to intercept them.
Kitsuchi's face lit up with smug satisfaction.
"My father always thinks I'm useless. Today I'll prove him wrong!"
"I may not be the strongest in personal combat, but being a shinobi isn't just about raw power — it's about using your head. I seized this opportunity. I can deal Sunagakure a devastating blow."
"I'll take prisoners and force Sunagakure to pay a huge price."
"Konoha's hard work will become my reward."
"Chiyo hasn't noticed anything. There's been zero movement from her side. By the time they realize what's happening, it'll be too late to reinforce. I already had that area scouted — no hidden forces."
Pakura's Sunagakure army continued retreating.
Orochimaru's Leaf forces kept chasing.
Orochimaru had a bad feeling, but he chose to trust the Byakugan.
Kitsuchi's Iwagakure army moved in for the ambush.
They had sent scouts ahead and could clearly see the Leaf forces still pursuing. Even though the opportunity felt almost too easy, none of them grew suspicious.
They didn't realize the truth:
Sunagakure's real target from the very beginning had been Iwagakure.
Konoha had only been a bonus.
Rasa had deliberately placed the massive Sun Disk on the exact path where Iwagakure would intercept the Sand forces.
Because of the Byakugan, he knew he couldn't hide it from the Leaf — they would have seen the enormous structure and grown wary. Once they became suspicious, the trap would fail.
But Iwagakure had no Byakugan. They couldn't detect it.
And because this particular Sand army was currently fighting Konoha, Iwagakure never imagined Sunagakure would still have the energy or focus to set a trap for them.
Because no trap had been prepared for the Leaf, they kept chasing.
Because the Leaf kept chasing, Iwagakure felt safe.
"They're here!"
From atop a massive dune, Kitsuchi spotted the Iwagakure forces approaching and his eyes lit up.
"Attack!"
At his command, a huge number of Iwagakure shinobi surged forward.
At that exact moment—
"Sun Disk… activate!"
