Chapter 18 - The President's Gambit

The subterranean silence of the White House Situation Room was heavy and suffocating.

The President of the United States reached for the crystal glass on the polished mahogany table. His hand trembled slightly as he brought it to his lips. He took a long, slow sip of ice water, the cold liquid doing little to soothe the dry, agonizing tightness in his throat.

He set the glass down and let out a long, exhausted sigh.

He raised his head, looking back at the massive digital monitors covering the far wall. The live CCTV and surveillance drone feeds from Novonia's financial district were playing out in real-time. Rudra Rathore was advancing deep into the city grid.

As the President watched Rudra effortlessly step over the smoking wreckage of the bridge, a dangerous, unprecedented idea began to form in his mind. He had initially ordered his cabinet to completely distance the administration from Thorne's criminal enterprise. But watching a foreign sovereign meticulously dismantle heavily armed troops without killing them sparked a ruthless political calculus.

The President's eyes narrowed. His posture slowly straightened in his leather chair.

"Gentlemen," the President spoke, his voice suddenly cutting through the tension, carrying a new, sharp edge of absolute authority. He turned his chair to face the Directors of the CIA, the FBI, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. "We are going to change our strategy. I want us to secretly send our support to Thorne."

The room froze.

The Secretary of State looked at him in complete bewilderment. "Mr. President? You just ordered us to completely distance this administration from his operation. If we support him against a sanctioned Indian operative—"

"Unofficially, of course," the President interrupted, raising a hand to silence the room. "We will contact Thorne through corrupted back-channels. We will tell him that the White House is secretly providing him with massive federal backup to help contain his target. But you are going to execute this deployment exactly as I instruct, under the highest possible secrecy."

The CIA Director leaned forward, his analytical mind trying to process the sudden pivot.

"Rudra Rathore is completely destroying the private army that Thorne has built," the President explained, pointing directly at the glowing monitor. "He is doing it efficiently, and most importantly, he is doing it without causing fatal casualties. So, we are going to use this exact situation to our advantage. We are going to use Rathore to arrest and remove all the corrupted people in our own federal institutions."

The realization began to dawn on the faces of the intelligence directors.

"I want a confidential, internal investigation launched right now across our entire intelligence and military network," the President commanded, his tone absolute. "The CIA, the FBI, the local police, military intelligence. Open the internal affairs files. Read the communications, the financial transactions, the bribery evidence, and the blackmail files. Filter them, and separate the names."

The President leaned over the table, locking eyes with the FBI Director.

"Identify every single compromised officer. Every rogue agent knowingly taking syndicate payments. Every military commander who has actively collaborated with Thorne. You package them together, you separate them from our loyal, innocent officers, and you send only those corrupted personnel to Novonia under the guise of official federal reinforcements."

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs slowly nodded, the tactical brilliance of the plan sinking in.

"We give them a free hand to deploy, but we severely limit their logistics," the President continued, outlining the trap. "Tell them they have access to heavy machinery and vehicles, but only provide them with our decommissioned surplus inventory. Give them the older armored vehicles. Give them the non-usable missiles and the tech that is scheduled for the scrap yard."

The President looked back at the screen. "The government will collect all the evidence of their deployment. When they arrive in Novonia to back up Thorne, Rathore will do exactly what he has been doing all night. He will continue destroying them. He will dismantle their old vehicles and leave the corrupted officers incapacitated on the street. The loyal personnel will remain entirely outside the conflict."

A grim, calculating satisfaction settled over the President's tired features.

"When the dust settles, we move our loyal forces in. We gather the surviving, unconscious officers and officially charge them with syndicate collusion. We get rid of the corruption in our institutions without a single congressional hearing."

The President leaned back. "Send Thorne his backup. But make sure every single man we send him is a traitor."

Before the cabinet could move, the President raised his hand again.

"There is one more thing," he stated, his voice dropping into a deadly, classified register. "I want every remaining surveillance satellite, every municipal street camera, and every thermal and biometric sensor in Novonia locked directly onto Rudra Rathore. Record every single second of his movements."

The CIA Director nodded slowly, pulling out a secure datapad.

"I want his entire combat algorithm mapped," the President commanded. "Record his physical strikes, his reaction times, and the exact electromagnetic frequencies of his energy manifestations. Feed the raw, unfiltered telemetry directly into our DARPA black-site AGI. Have the artificial intelligence run predictive simulations. I want to know exactly how his body works."

The Secretary of State looked uneasy. "Mr. President, he is operating as the 'good guy' in this scenario. He is cleaning the corruption out of our military."

"He is doing us a massive geopolitical favor tonight," the President acknowledged coldly. "But he is an independent sovereign power. What happens in five years if his corporate interests misalign with ours? The DARPA AI won't understand his supernatural abilities overnight, but it will identify patterns. I want long-term countermeasures developed. If we ever have to fight him, I want to know how."

Ten miles beneath the financial district of Novonia, the atmosphere in Thorne's subterranean command center was suffocating.

Thorne paced like a caged animal in front of the glitching tactical monitors. His billionaire backers were screaming in his earpiece. Suddenly, the highly encrypted priority console on the central table began to chime.

It was a direct line. The caller ID simply read: WASHINGTON D.C. - LIAISON PRIME.

Thorne snatched the heavy receiver off the console.

"Where is my backup?" Thorne snarled, his voice vibrating with a desperate, venomous rage. "My forces are being dismantled. I paid your people millions of dollars!"

On the other end of the line, a smooth, composed voice replied. It was a high-ranking, deeply corrupted federal official—a man completely unaware that he had just been marked for disposal by the President.

"Calm down, Thorne," the Washington liaison said smoothly. "You are getting exactly what you paid for. Unofficially, the leash is off. I have just authorized the deployment of massive, off-the-books federal battalions. Rogue tactical units, compromised CIA strike teams, and corrupted military armor. We are sending everything we have. The heavy machinery is rolling out from the surplus armories right now."

Thorne's breathing slowed. A dark, arrogant smile slowly carved its way across his scarred face. He believed he had just successfully blackmailed the most powerful government on Earth into fighting his war. He remained entirely unaware of the President's deception.

"Route them directly to the financial district perimeter," Thorne commanded into the receiver, his voice echoing with renewed authority. "Rathore is moving off the bridge. I want your battalions to bury him under a mountain of federal steel."

On the surface of Novonia, the freezing rain had begun to fall heavily, washing the scent of ozone and blood into the city's massive storm drains.

Rudra Rathore advanced onto the wide, neon-lit avenues of the financial district, his ancient eyes scanning the towering glass spires above him. He didn't have to walk far.

The ground beneath his boots began to vibrate. The rhythmic, heavy thud of marching boots and grinding heavy machinery echoed down the urban canyons. Pouring out from the intersecting avenues was a massive, highly disciplined military force.

It was the final corrupted federal deployment. Thousands of heavily armed men wearing sanitized, unmarked tactical gear. Rolling up behind them were convoys of older, decommissioned American military vehicles—blocky, surplus armored personnel carriers, older-generation Humvees, and heavily modified tactical trucks. The corrupted commanders didn't care that they had been issued older gear; they believed their sheer numbers would be enough.

Rudra stopped in the center of the avenue. His High-Level Thinking Processing instantly analyzed their formations. He recognized the tactical difference immediately. These were government-trained killers.

Suddenly, the relentless, freezing downpour over the financial district was violently blown aside.

A massive, hurricane-force downdraft scattered the sheets of rain. High above the neon-lit avenue, the heavy storm clouds parted. The colossal, obsidian hull of the Rathore family's spacecraft descended silently from the sky. Its blue, anti-gravity thrusters illuminated the glass skyscrapers as it hovered perfectly still, a few hundred feet directly above Rudra.

The ship's heavy side-bay doors hissed open.

Standing on the edge of the ramp, looking down at the smoking, rain-slicked battlefield, was Vedant.

The advanced medical nanites of the emergency drone had done their work perfectly. Every trace of the horrific plasma burns had been erased from his skin. He was fully recovered, his energy completely restored, dressed in a sharp, pristine set of dark tactical clothing pulled from the ship's armory. He had refused to be a passive spectator. He had returned to provide vital tactical overwatch.

Vedant leaned over the edge of the ramp and threw a sleek, metallic box down into the abyss.

Rudra didn't even need to look. Engaging his Altered Time Perception, he casually raised his left hand. The box fell with terminal velocity, but to Rudra's hyper-accelerated mind, it drifted like a feather. He caught it effortlessly.

"You are awake," Rudra called out, his voice projecting effortlessly through the howling downdraft, fiercely protective of his brother. "Are you okay?"

"Fully recovered, Bhai!" Vedant shouted back, a fierce, confident grin spreading across his face. "The tech did its job. Need some help down there?"

"No," Rudra replied simply. He would never allow Vedant to step back into the line of physical fire.

Rudra pressed his thumb against the biometric lock of the metallic box. Instantly, the box lost its solid shape, dissolving into a stream of shimmering, deep-black liquid nanoparticles.

The liquid flowed up Rudra's arm like living water. The nanites, infused with microscopic weaves of unbreakable Terrastrum and synthetic bio-silk, crawled over his heavily muscled torso. They aggressively repaired the shredded, ruined fabric of his handloom shirt, seamlessly merging with the original threads.

In seconds, the liquid completely solidified, forming a flawless, regal combat weave. It retained the elegant, traditional aesthetic of dark Indian silk, but it was now a highly advanced armor, providing immense resistance to physical and environmental damage without resorting to an oversized mechanical exoskeleton.

High above, Vedant stepped back into the ship as the bay doors closed. He dropped into a high-backed command chair and opened his encrypted tactical laptop. His fingers flew across the glowing keys. Through the spacecraft's advanced intelligence systems, he began actively hacking into the corrupted federal comms network to map the enemy's command structure.

Down on the avenue, Rudra widened his stance.

Suddenly, an encrypted audio link crackled to life inside Rudra's earpiece.

"Bhai, listen to me," Vedant's voice echoed, tight with disbelief and rapid calculation. "I just cracked their localized deployment manifests and cross-referenced them with internal investigation logs floating on secure federal servers. These aren't just rogue mercenaries acting on their own."

Rudra kept his eyes on the approaching wall of steel. "Explain."

"It's a play by the White House," Vedant rapidly typed, sending the decrypted evidence directly to Rudra's optical heads-up display. "The American President isn't trying to stop you. He used Thorne's desperation to deploy every compromised, bribed, and corrupted officer in their federal network. Washington sent them here to die. They are using you as the executioner to clean their own house."

Rudra froze for a microscopic fraction of a second.

A flash of genuine, unexpected shock rippled through his partitioned mind. The sheer, ruthless pragmatism of the American President was staggering. To legally wash his hands of a corrupted military apparatus by feeding them directly to a foreign sovereign—it was a move of cold, calculating genius.

Rudra's light brown eyes hardened. The momentary stun evaporated, replaced by a grim, acknowledging respect for the political maneuver. He now understood exactly what was happening behind the scenes.

"Stop holding back," Vedant's voice turned ice-cold over the comms. "They are traitors to their own state, and their own government just condemned them. They knowingly took criminal payments to murder us. You don't need to spare them anymore."

Rudra looked at the incoming tide of corrupted federal soldiers. He had spent the last hour meticulously calculating kinetic impact to ensure his attackers survived. He had shown them the mercy of a god.

But these were not ordinary soldiers caught in a criminal conflict. They were corrupt individuals who had weaponized their authority for Thorne's blood money.

Rudra made a deliberate, emotionally controlled decision.

That mercy was now officially revoked.
