Chapter 2 - Chapter One: The Girl at the Gate

Romania Domenica was left at the door of an orphanage on a cold night.

It was late, and the street was quiet. St. Augustine was run by nuns. Her grandmother carried her to the door, placed her down gently, and left a note with her. She did not knock. She did not look back. She walked away into the dark. Sister Aroma pick her up and shh Romania and read the note.

The note said:

Romania Domenica is my name. Please take care of me.

I am born on 10.10.01.

Thank you.

Sister Aroma found Romania soon after and took her inside. Sister Roca and Sister Aroma felt sorry for Romania and they decided to raise her. They gave her food, clothes, and a bed. They treated her kindly, like their own child. Romania grew up in the orphanage. She helped in the kitchen, cleaned the floors, and studied with the other kids. The nuns loved her because she was polite and quiet. But sometimes strange things happened around her. Candles would burn longer when she was near. Rooms felt warmer when she was inside. One time, when another kid pushed her, the floor cracked a little under her hand. No one could explain why. The nuns noticed, but they didn't say anything to her about it. When Romania turned sixteen, she had to leave the orphanage. Sister Aroma and Sister Roca hugged her goodbye and gave her a small cross for protection.

"Be careful out there," Sister Aroma said since Romania felt like her own

"I will," Romania replied.

Years past;

She found a job as a server in a small restaurant in the city. The place was old and busy. The pay was low, but she needed the work. The owner told her she could start right away. Romania worked hard. She carried plates, cleaned tables, and tried not to make mistakes. The people there didn't know her story. She liked that. She felt like a normal girl for the first time.

Then something strange happened.

A man sitting at one of the tables suddenly grabbed his chest. He looked like he couldn't breathe. People started shouting. Someone told Romania to call for help.

Romania ran to him and touched his arm.

When she did, her body felt hot. It was like heat moved through her hands. The lights above them flickered for a moment. Romania felt dizzy and scared.

Then the man started breathing again

Everyone stared at her.

Romania pulled her hand away. Her palms felt warm. For a second, she thought she saw a faint red glow on her skin, but it disappeared quickly.

"I didn't do anything," she said, even though she wasn't sure if that was true.

That night, when she went home, she couldn't sleep.

Her hands still felt warm.

And deep inside her, something felt awake for the first time.
