Chapter 22 - The Sudden Shift

"...Hold on."

The thought came out of instinct more than understanding.

Something wasn't right.

A moment ago, everything had been stable. The flow of Qi was clear, smooth, and easy to follow. There was structure to it—something I could observe and slowly understand.

Now—

"…What is happening?"

The change came without warning.

The thin strands of Qi I had just been observing no longer behaved the same way.

They didn't move in controlled lines anymore, nor did they follow the steady circulation I had just learned to trace.

They surged.

What had once been a calm, steady flow suddenly turned violent, as if something had forced all of it into motion at once. The strands collapsed into each other, losing their shape and turning into something heavier, something wider.

A wave.

No—more than that.

It felt like a surge, like a flood breaking through something that had been holding it back.

"Wait—wait, what—?"

My focus snapped toward the core. The moment the Qi reached it, everything intensified.

I couldn't see the impact, but I felt it.

A sudden sensation spread through my entire body, strong enough to disrupt my thoughts. It wasn't pain, but it wasn't something I could ignore either. It felt like every part of me reacted at once, like something deep inside had been struck directly.

"…Why does it feel like this…?"

Just a moment ago, everything had been under control.

Now it wasn't.

I hadn't done anything. I hadn't tried to force the flow or change how I was observing it. If anything, I had been careful not to interfere.

So why was it like this now?

The Qi didn't slow down. It kept surging toward the core, wave after wave, each one stronger than the last. It didn't scatter or return to its earlier path. Everything was being pulled into one place, and every time it reached the core, that same sensation spread through me again—deeper, heavier, harder to ignore.

"…No… this isn't right."

This wasn't the natural flow I had just understood.

This was something else.

Before I could make sense of it, a faint glow appeared.

Then—

[Primal Core Activated]

[Initial Cultivation Initiated]

For a moment, I didn't react.

The words were clear, but the meaning didn't settle.

"…Cultivation?"

The thought came slowly.

"…Me?"

That didn't make sense. I hadn't started anything. I didn't even fully understand what I had been doing before, let alone something like this.

So how—

Another line appeared before I could finish the thought.

[Host Entering Hibernation State — Host Trait Activated]

"…What?"

That one hit immediately.

"No—wait."

My focus tightened, trying to hold onto everything at once.

"Hibernation? Why now? I just woke up—what do you mean hibernation?"

There had been nothing about this before.

Nothing in the status. Not even a hint.

"…System?"

No response.

The Qi kept surging. The sensation in my body didn't stop.

"System—answer me."

Still nothing.

The silence made it worse.

"…What is this 'host trait'? This wasn't there before."

The thought sharpened, frustration mixing with confusion.

"Did something change? Did I trigger something? Why isn't it responding—"

The words stopped—not because I chose to stop, but because I couldn't continue.

Something was wrong.

My focus slipped.

At first, it was subtle. The thoughts didn't disappear—they just became harder to hold onto. The connection I had to everything around me began to blur, like trying to look at something through water.

"…No…"

I tried to focus again.

It didn't work.

The sensation in my body was still there, the Qi still moving, but my awareness was slipping away from it.

"Wait… I—"

The thought broke apart.

The system text still lingered in my mind, but even that felt distant now.

"…At least answer me… you useless system…"

I couldn't finish it.

Everything faded.

It didn't happen suddenly or all at once, but steadily, like something was pulling me down into silence, layer by layer, until there was nothing left to hold onto.

And then—

Nothing.

There was no sense of falling, no awareness of time passing. It wasn't even darkness in the usual sense.

There was just… nothing.

For a while, I didn't think. I didn't feel. It was like everything had been cut off completely.

The silence didn't feel unfamiliar.

"…Again…"

The thought came slowly.

This place—

How many times since waking up as a tortoise have I already come here?

Honestly… it feels like I've spent more time here than in my actual body.

A small laugh slipped out, though it didn't carry much weight.

I looked around out of habit, even though I already knew there was nothing to see. Still, I did it anyway, hoping something would make sense this time.

What just happened?

Why did I come back here again?

And what was that "trait" the system mentioned?

Questions kept coming, but there was no one to answer them.

"…I'm seriously just talking to myself here…"

It was strange.

This place had always been the same—empty, calm, like floating without any weight.

There had never been anything to notice before.

But this time—

Something felt off.

Not in a way I could clearly point out. There was no shape, no sound, nothing I could see.

Still…

"…Why does it feel different…?"

The thought didn't go away.

The emptiness wasn't as complete as it should have been.

There was something beneath it—not something I could see or hear, but something I could still feel, faint yet impossible to ignore. It lingered like something half-present, not fully there, but not gone either.

I didn't move. I just stayed there, letting my awareness settle.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

Something shifted. It wasn't in front of me or behind me, and it wasn't even somewhere I could point to. I focused on it, but the moment I did, it vanished—not fading away or moving, just… gone.

"…What was that…?"

I waited.

Another moment passed.

Then that same feeling returned, neither closer nor any clearer—just there again.

This time, I didn't try to chase it or understand it. I just noticed it.

And even that felt like too much.

Because the moment my awareness settled on it—

It disappeared again.

"…I can't…"

The words didn't finish.

There was nothing to hold onto.

Nothing to understand.

Whatever this was, it wasn't something I could perceive properly.

That much was clear.

I didn't try again.

There was no point.

The void returned to stillness—empty, unmoving, like before… but not quite the same.

Then something changed.

Not around me.

In me.

A faint sense of weight returned, as if something was pulling my awareness back toward something solid. It wasn't sudden—it built slowly.

Then—

A voice.

"…How long are you going to stay like that?"

It didn't come from the void.

It came from outside.

"…Wake up."

The pull became stronger.

The stillness broke.

Sensation returned all at once. Breath came first—slow, steady. Then the weight of my body followed, settling into place as the shell surrounded me again.

I was already inside my shell.

When I opened my eyes, I slowly pushed my neck out.

For a moment, I didn't move.

Something felt off.

Before I could even figure out what it was, a sudden pressure hit me. A shockwave followed, snapping away the last bit of dizziness.

Now I was fully awake.

"What did you do?"

The skull's voice came out sharp, carrying both anger and something else—curiosity.

My thoughts paused.

"…What did I do…?"

The previous questions hadn't even settled yet, and now there was another one.

But the way it said it—

This wasn't casual.

This was serious.

And I had no answer.
