Chapter 42 - Chapter 159 – Wind Between Buildings

The wind moved differently here.

Between the tall buildings, it no longer flowed freely like it had on the rooftop. It twisted, compressed, and accelerated through narrow gaps, creating sudden gusts that appeared without warning. The space felt tighter, enclosed by towering concrete walls that reflected sound and movement back toward those walking within.

The child sensed it immediately.

Their steps slowed as they entered the passageway, small fingers tightening around Aren's hand—not from fear, but awareness.

"Wind… loud," the child murmured.

Aren nodded. "Good. You noticed. Between buildings, air becomes unpredictable. Pokémon learn this early."

Charizard descended lower, wings tucked carefully to avoid stirring sudden currents. The Suicune moved ahead this time, paws placing themselves deliberately, reading the invisible flow of air with practiced ease. Their manes rippled unevenly—an unspoken warning.

Liora stayed close behind the child, her presence steady and calm. "We'll move slowly here. No rushing."

A loose paper scrap skittered across the ground suddenly, propelled by a sharp gust. The child startled—but didn't step back.

Instead, they watched.

The paper spun, lifted, then slapped against a wall before dropping still.

The child tilted their head. "Fast… then gone."

"Yes," Aren said quietly. "That's how danger often works. Quick, then quiet."

They moved forward.

The child adjusted their steps without being told—shorter strides, feet placed more carefully. When another gust rushed through, they leaned slightly into Aren instead of freezing or pulling away.

That adjustment mattered.

A small Meowth emerged from behind a stack of crates near a loading door. Its ears flattened as the wind surged again, claws scraping briefly against the ground.

The child saw it.

Before Aren could speak, the child shifted sideways, opening space and lowering themselves slightly—not crouching fully, just enough to seem smaller.

The Meowth paused.

Its tail flicked.

Then it darted past, unharmed.

Liora exhaled softly. "You gave it room."

The child nodded once. "Didn't chase."

Aren's chest tightened—not with worry, but with something deeper.

They hadn't copied behavior.

They had understood intent.

Further ahead, the passage narrowed. Loose gravel collected near a drain, faintly rattling as air rushed through. The Suicune stopped, lifting a paw.

The child stopped too.

No instruction.

No warning.

Just alignment.

Charizard lowered its head, eyes focused. A brief gust surged—stronger than the others—sending pebbles skittering sharply across the ground.

The child flinched this time.

But only once.

They watched the pebbles scatter, noting where they landed. When the wind died, they stepped carefully around the unstable patch instead of through it.

Aren swallowed. "That was the right choice."

The child didn't smile. They were focused.

The passage began to widen again, wind calming as space returned. Sound softened. The air felt less sharp.

Only then did the child relax.

They reached up, tugging Aren's sleeve. "Done?"

"Yes," Aren said gently. "You did very well."

Charizard lifted slightly, wings loosening. The Suicune resumed their silent glide, tension leaving their posture.

As they exited into a quieter street, the child looked back once at the narrow corridor between buildings.

"Wind hides," they said softly.

Liora knelt beside them. "Yes. And you learned to listen to it."

The city resumed its calm rhythm around them. Lights glowed softly. The danger had been minor—almost invisible to most.

But for the child, it had been a lesson not in fear…

…but in anticipation.

And anticipation, once learned, never truly faded.
