Chapter 62 - Poison

Vane doesn't look up from the book for a long moment, his eyes scanning the ancient text as if the answers to my sudden insanity are hidden in Balthazar's prose. 

The silence in the room is suffocating, broken only by the soft ticking of the clock and the heavy, rhythmic thrum of my own heart. 

Finally, he closes the book with a dull thud and turns his gaze toward me.

"What happened, Iskera?" His voice is low, the voice of a commander assessing a battlefield.

I swallow hard, the movement painful in my raw throat, as I lift my legs to the bed, while arranging the sway of my gown appropriately. Then, I wrap my arms around my knees, pulling them tighter against my chest as if I could physically hold myself together. 

"I... I don't know."

Vane's eyes narrow, his jaw tightening. He is clearly unsatisfied with that answer. He leans forward, his presence expanding to fill the space between us.
