Chapter 88 - CH 88: The House Tightens – Eleanor’s Night Walk

The Main House was lit when Eleanor's convoy came back.

Night had already settled over the grounds. Extra guards stood along the drive. The new servants paused in doorways as the cars passed, then lowered their heads and went back to work. Word had traveled faster than the vehicles: Master Fin had been discharged. The doctors believed a familiar house would steady him better than another night in a sealed hospital wing.

Eleanor stepped out first.

The black coat was still around her shoulders. Her chignon had loosened. The cold in her face was not the usual command. It was thinner, sharper, as if she had spent the last hours holding herself together by force.

"Madam," Marcus said. "Master Fin's convoy took a detour to the private airfield. Your orders?"

Eleanor paused, then started walking.

"Leave it. He has business to finish. I will deal with the disturbance waiting for him here."

Marcus's eyes flickered once.

"Yes, Madam."

She went inside.

The entrance hall smelled of polish, lilies, and warm stone. The butler bowed. Eleanor walked past him without a word. Her heels struck the marble hard enough that two maids flattened themselves against the wall.

She was halfway to the staircase when a voice stopped her.

"You're back later than I expected."

Julian stood at the foot of the west corridor as if he had been waiting there on purpose.

He was dressed like a man who thought money could finish raising him: dark shirt open at the throat, expensive watch, hair pushed back with too much care. He smiled when he saw her. The smile was easy. The eyes underneath it were not.

Eleanor stopped.

For a moment, a face she had spent years trying to bury flashed behind her eyes. Matthew. The lid she had forced shut over that old nightmare lifted, then slammed down again.

Julian took a step closer.

"I heard there was an accident," he said. "How touching. The great Eleanor Harrington rushing out like an ordinary mother."

Elena shifted behind her. Marcus's gaze darkened, but he held still.

Eleanor's voice came out quiet and clean.

"You will not speak of my son in that tone."

Julian's smile widened a fraction.

"Why not? Isn't he my stepson?" He let the word hang, then lowered his voice just enough. "Wait. Would that even be correct, since I was his half—"

He stopped there.

He did not finish it. He did not have to. The threat was for Eleanor, not for the hall. The servants knew nothing. Marcus still believed the marriage was real and heard only a boy testing a title. Eleanor heard the clause he had signed beginning to rot in his mouth.

The hall seemed to tighten.

She walked toward him until there was almost no space left. Up close he was still a boy trying to stand like a man. She could smell cologne on him, too much of it, and the faint sweetness of liquor.

"You are here because I allowed it," she said. "You eat in this house because I have not yet decided you are more trouble than you are worth. Do not mistake a private arrangement for ownership."

Julian did not step back. That was the first mistake.

"You offered me a fake marriage because Dominus put a knife to your neck," he said, low enough that neither the servants nor Marcus could hear. "You needed a guarantee. I needed a door into this family. We both got what we wanted. Don't start acting like you're above the deal now that your precious heir scraped his forehead."

Eleanor's hand rose.

This time she did not miss.

The slap cracked across Julian's face hard enough to turn his head. A maid at the far end of the hall froze with a tray in her hands.

Julian touched his cheek. For a second the boy showed through — shock, heat, injured pride. Then the smile came back, smaller and uglier.

"You… you dare slap me?"

Marcus took one step forward. Eleanor lifted two fingers without looking back. He stopped.

"You know nothing about your father," she said. "And you know even less about me."

Julian leaned in, close enough that only she could hear.

"I know enough. I know you killed him. I know Fin is lying in a hospital because his perfect world finally cracked. And I know that if I wait long enough, you'll slip. Women like you always do. All that control, all that ice — it has to go somewhere."

Eleanor's voice turned almost gentle.

"If you ever touch my staff again, if you ever speak my son's name as if you have a claim on him, I will end the arrangement and leave you with nothing but the name you crawled in on. Do you understand me?"

Julian's jaw flexed. His cheek still burned. He wanted to answer like a man. What came out was still a boy's spite.

"You won't throw me out. Not while Dominus is watching. Not while Fin is broken. You need me alive."

Eleanor looked at him as if measuring how much of him was still useful.

"It seems my lack of restraint made you believe you can play both sides. I will keep my end of the deal. You will keep yours — with better control."

She turned away first.

"Marcus."

"Yes, Madam."

"Move him out of the east wing guest suite. Put him in the old annex. Guards at both doors. He does not enter the family wing."

Julian laughed once, sharp and disbelieving.

"You wouldn't dare. If Dominus finds out, it won't be long before your son hears the truth."

Eleanor paused on the first stair.

"Take his phone as well."

She walked up.

Julian's face trembled. Dominus had called him only hours earlier, reported Fin's accident, and told him to accelerate the plan to tame Eleanor. He had walked into the hall thinking he was ready. He had failed in front of the whole house.

Before he could speak again, Marcus took his arm. There was a quiet satisfaction in the grip, something Marcus had not been allowed to use in days. Julian struggled, claiming he was Eleanor's husband, that he could not be handled like this. Marcus did not flinch. To him, the marriage was real enough to be ugly. The order was still the order.

At the private airfield, a Harrington jet had already left the runway.

Inside the cabin, Alain sat with his unconscious daughter against his shoulder and a check in his hand. Even a lifetime of savings would not have reached the number written there. Clara's face was pale. Her breathing was shallow. The destination ahead of them was still unnamed, chosen only because it was far.

Back on the tarmac, Fin stood with the Echo guards and watched the plane climb until it became a small light in the dark.

That chapter of his life was leaving with it. The woman he had once believed he could never let go of was on that aircraft, and he had been the one who put her there.

In the shadow of the hangar, Sarah stood watching the same sky. Her face held years she could no longer carry. Her body still held wounds that had not closed.

Fin walked toward her. His expression tightened. Sarah tensed at once. After the island, he knew neither she nor Clara would ever be untouched again. He could not undo that. He could only move them out of the blast radius.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

Sarah paused, then nodded.

"Thank you," she said quietly. "For getting me out. For the others too."

"Don't thank me. You were dragged there because of me. Nothing I say will heal what you endured."

Echo 2 set a suitcase down. Sarah took it with both hands, cautiously.

"I already arranged the best doctors I could find for your father," Fin said. "He and your family have been sent to France for treatment. Take the money. Live the life you want, Sarah. I am sorry for everything that happened."

Sarah looked at the suitcase, then at Fin. The look she gave him was so venomous that even he faltered for a second.

"Will you make him pay?" she asked.

Fin met her eyes. His voice came out cold and absolute.

"He will. For every wound he put on you and Clara, he will pay tenfold. By the time I am finished with him, he will not be a man. He will barely be human. Go. You will never have to face him again."

Sarah trembled, still holding the bag. She nodded once and left without another word. The guards opened the door. She passed through it quietly and did not look back.

Fin's fists shook at his sides.

He turned to Echo 1.

"Start the purification on Mike. Make it slow. Make it last. Show him the mother he thought was dead. Do not break him yet."

Echo 1's face showed nothing. He nodded and left with two of the others.

Echo 2 opened the car door. Fin stepped in, and the airfield lights slid off the glass as the vehicle pulled away.

Behind him, the runway was empty.

Ahead of him, the next page of his life had already begun.

By the time Fin reached the Main House, the sky had gone fully dark. Night fog pressed against the windows, pale and wet. He stepped out of the car with the phone already at his ear, the dressing on his forehead tight in the cold.

"So you met her. What do you think? Can you do it?"

Fin walked toward the house. The gravel was damp under his shoes.

Lila laughed under her breath.

"This woman is something else. Even I was shocked after reading about those perverted habits. Don't worry. She'll beg you soon enough."

Fin's mouth tightened.

"I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Keep me updated."

"Alright. Take care, Daddy."

The call ended.

The word should have been a joke. Tonight it only made the house feel closer.

Fin went up to his rooms. A maid was waiting at the door. When she saw him, she straightened at once.

"Master Fin. Welcome home."

He nodded and smiled, softer than he felt.

"Be at ease. What is it?"

The maid flushed at the smile. Her ears had gone red, even as she tried to keep her face still.

"Lady Marianne asked if she could visit you tonight."

For a second, Fin saw another room, another night, Marianne's voice breaking against his. He had used her then because he could not stand the silence. He would not do it tonight. Not with his mother already in this house, and not with the vow from the hospital still sitting under his skin.

"Not tonight," he said. "Tell her I have other plans. I'll send for her if I need her."

The maid bowed.

"Yes, sir."

She left, relief and disappointment mixed so tightly on her face that she almost looked frightened of both.

Fin turned to the Echo guards.

"You don't need to watch my door for the next few days."

Echo 1 was already gone. Echo 2 was leading the unit now. She nodded, and the smile she tried to hide still tugged at the corner of her mouth before they withdrew. Without them, the corridor felt larger. Emptier. That was the point.

Fin went inside and walked straight to the bath. Steam would hide the smell of the airfield. Hot water would not wash off the look Sarah had given him, but it might let him stand still long enough to decide what he was becoming.

Some time later, the same maid finished her duties and was heading toward the staff wing when a silhouette moved down the family corridor toward Fin's rooms. She squinted, then recognized the figure.

Her hand flew to her mouth before any sound could escape.

Madam Harrington was walking toward her son's door as if the house itself had narrowed to that one threshold.

The maid did not wait to see whether the door opened.

She already knew this was not a visit she was meant to witness.
