Every nerve in my body was wired to shift and strike, Zver howling beneath my skin at the sight of her being kicked like a rag doll.

I could feel my teeth crack from my grinding jaw, my heart beating out of my chest at a mile per minute.

Then our eyes locked across the large expanse of sand that separated us, and even as the bones of her legs were fully exposed, limp and twisted in a macabre display that churned my stomach, she still managed to talk me off the ledge I was about to jump from.

I gripped the stand, knuckles white, hand numb as Veronique exacted her revenge.

From where I stood, she would win this round, as the more sand—foreign bodies—embedded themselves into her ruined leg, the slower her healing would be.

There were ways to go about this, just a few openings that could still allow Selene to get the upper hand, but she had not been training long enough for those options to present themselves in her jumbled mind.
