The Anatomy Of An Umbra

Welcome to Jo'Fratini!

Before swords start swinging and people begin throwing magic at each other, I'd recommend spending a few minutes here. This auxiliary chapter explains the basic anatomy of an Umbra and how magic functions in this world. It's not mandatory, but it'll save you from wondering, "Wait... what's a Mana Crystal again?"

So... Let's begin!

...The Anatomy Of An Umbra...

"The following information has been compiled by the Whumerian Magical Research Association and reflects the current scientific understanding of Umbra anatomy. While these findings are considered reliable, magical biology remains an active field of research. Additional organs, structures, or functions may exist but have yet to be discovered or fully understood."

-Mana Crystal-

The Mana Crystal is a specialized organ responsible for producing, storing, and regulating mana within the body. It serves as the core of an individual's magical system, determining their mana capacity, mana output, and natural rate of mana recovery.

Although classified as an organ due to its biological integration with the body, the Mana Crystal differs from most organs in one significant aspect: it is not essential for survival. An individual can live without a functioning Mana Crystal, but the loss of one results in the permanent loss of their ability to produce, store, and manipulate mana. Without a Mana Crystal, a person becomes incapable of using magic, regardless of their natural talent or training.

In appearance, the Mana Crystal resembles an egg that has been gently compressed from two opposite ends, giving it a slightly flattened, oval shape. It possesses a deep dark magenta coloration and a rough, faceted surface reminiscent of a naturally formed diamond. Despite its rugged texture, the crystal is highly lustrous and interacts with light in unusual ways, splitting and scattering it into brilliant bands of color.

The Mana Crystal is one of the most durable biological structures known. Its crystalline composition allows it to withstand forces of approximately 200 tons without developing even the slightest crack. This extraordinary resilience protects the organ from physical trauma and ensures the stable storage and regulation of mana throughout an individual's life.

-Magrhizae-

The Magrhizae is a specialized network of root-like mana vessels that branch from the Mana Crystal and spread throughout the body. Each individual vessel is called a Magrhiza. Their primary function is to transport mana from the Mana Crystal and gradually infuse it into the bloodstream, allowing mana to circulate throughout the body.

They resemble fine roots or veins and range in color from dark magenta to faint violet. When carrying large amounts of mana, they emit a subtle glow.

Unlike ordinary blood vessels, the Magrhizae are composed of highly mana-conductive tissue capable of withstanding immense mana pressure without rupturing. The condition and efficiency of the Magrhizae directly affect an individual's mana circulation and ability to use magic. Severe damage to the Magrhizae can greatly weaken or completely prevent the use of magic.

-Neural Mana Cognitive Hormone (NMCH)-

Neural Mana Cognitive Hormones, commonly abbreviated as NMCH, are specialized hormone-like substances produced by the Mana Crystal that establish a connection between the brain and the body's magical system. They allow the brain to communicate with the Mana Crystal, enabling conscious control and manipulation of mana.

Under normal conditions, the Mana Crystal produces NMCH at a stable rate. However, during extreme situations, the body releases emergency hormones in response to stress or danger. By detecting these hormonal changes, the Mana Crystal rapidly increases NMCH production, strengthening the connection between the brain and mana system.

This is why inexperienced magic users often require intense focus before casting spells. Their bodies cannot maintain high NMCH levels naturally, causing delays between thought and mana response. Through years of training, skilled fighters can develop a permanent adaptation where the Mana Crystal continuously produces NMCH, allowing them to access and control mana instantly without conscious preparation.

NMCH decomposes into microscopic aether particles, which are released into the bloodstream before being filtered out by the body.

-Aether Gland-

The Aether Gland is a specialized organ located near the Mana Crystal. Unlike most organs, an Umbra possesses only a single Aether Gland, which is directly connected to the Mana Crystal.

Its primary function is to process the Aether Particles produced after NMCH completes its function. The Aether Gland filters and converts excess Aether Particles into reusable components, allowing the Mana Crystal to recycle materials required for producing new NMCH. Any unusable residue is naturally removed from the body.

The efficiency of the Aether Gland directly affects an individual's endurance during prolonged magic usage. Highly developed Aether Glands allow skilled magic users to maintain spells for longer periods by rapidly processing magical waste.

-Neural Mana Interface (NMI)-

The Neural Mana Interface, commonly abbreviated as NMI, is a specialized region of the brain. It is responsible for translating thoughts, intentions, and commands into signals that can be understood by the magical system.

While the brain creates the intention to cast a spell, the NMI converts that intention into a magical command and transmits it through NMCH to the Mana Crystal. The efficiency of the Neural Mana Interface determines an individual's spell control, reaction speed, and ability to perform complex magic.

A damaged NMI can result in difficulty controlling mana, delayed spell activation, or complete inability to use magic despite having a functional Mana Crystal.

-Affinity Node-

The Affinity Node is a specialized organ responsible for determining an individual's natural magical affinity and shaping how mana is converted into magic.

Rather than producing mana, the Affinity Node modifies mana as it leaves the Mana Crystal, giving it the properties required for a particular magical affinity, such as fire, water, earth, wind, lightning, or ice. While every individual possesses an Affinity Node, its development varies from person to person, influencing their natural talent and compatibility with different forms of magic.

The condition and efficiency of the Affinity Node directly affect spell power, mana efficiency, casting speed, and mastery over one's natural affinity. Severe damage to the Affinity Node can weaken elemental control, greatly increase mana consumption, or even prevent the use of affinity-based magic while leaving basic mana manipulation intact.

All magical organs are composed of the same crystalline biological material as the Mana Crystal. This specialized tissue possesses exceptional mana conductivity and durability, allowing every magical organ to communicate and function as one interconnected system.

That should be all you need before diving into the story.

Now then, enjoy the read:)
