Chapter 16 - Chapter 16:– The Threshold of Departure

Ravan, who had been standing as still as a stone statue, slowly rested his brass axe against the edge of the table. His usually thunderous voice softened into a low whisper. "Kyle, come here."

As Kyle approached, Ravan closed the heavy leather-bound book and pulled out an old, yellowed map from beneath it. This was no ordinary parchment—blue and violet veins pulsed across its surface like living energy. The moment Kyle placed his hand upon it, a magical glow shimmered above the map.

"This is the part of Aethelgard that was erased from all maps," Ravan said, pointing toward the distant north, where storms of cloud and snow swirled endlessly. "Draken's first and most crucial fragment—The Eye of Wisdom—lies buried somewhere within the silent ruins of The Frozen Reach."

Kyle fixed his gaze on the glowing point. A strange chill ran through his chest. "How long will it take to get there?" he asked quietly.

"Do not worry about time," Ravan replied, studying him through masked eyes. "Worry about the boundaries you are about to cross. When you left your village, Greycliff, you were prey. Now… you are a key that many will seek to claim."

He circled the table and stopped before Kyle. "The world beyond these guild walls is no longer as the books describe. The Umbra Conclave's spies and their Soul Devourers no longer hide in shadows alone. They are hunting the scent of Draken's soul in the air."

Placing his massive hand on Kyle's shoulder, Ravan's weight felt like a mountain. "Prepare yourself mentally. Death lingers in the wind, and every stranger may be an enemy. This map will not only guide your path—it will connect you to the past Draken himself wishes to forget. To claim The Eye of Wisdom is to witness truths that even gods trembled before. Is your soul ready for that?"

Kyle looked at the black ring on his finger, now emitting a faint, ominous violet glow at 10% corruption. He could feel the map and the ring responding to each other.

"You must not only fight, Kyle," Ravan's tone hardened. "You must survive. If you break, Draken will be freed—and if he is freed, this world will turn to ash. Remember, you carry the greatest secret of the Chronos Guild. Your failure means humanity's end."

Kyle inhaled deeply. The cold of the Archives no longer frightened him; it was preparing him for the storm ahead. He rolled the map carefully and pressed it against his chest. When he walked out of these doors, the last fragments of his innocence would remain behind.

In the heavy silence, Ravan turned to Arin. "From this moment, Kyle's protection and guidance are your responsibility. You will take him to the Frozen Reach."

Arin met Kyle's eyes. He was no longer the "Soulless" boy she had once seen, but the vessel of a force capable of destroying the world. She bowed to accept the order, then faced Kyle with calm sharpness in her voice.

"Before we cross the guild's threshold, understand this," she said. "I am not accompanying you because you are a prince in need of protection. I am here because you are Draken's Vessel. My duty is not only to guide you—but to ensure you do not lose yourself and become a monster."

Kyle touched his ring. "Do you think I'll lose control?"

"Power is the most dangerous intoxication," Arin answered steadily. "Your Corruption Meter is at 10%. You may feel stronger—but Draken's poison is slowly spreading through your veins. Without strong willpower, your strength will become your downfall."

She gestured toward the faint violet smoke rising from his hand. "The guild trained me in Spiritual Balance. As one of elven royal blood, I can sense the fluctuations of Draken's energy. When his shadow begins to dominate your soul, I will warn you. But saving yourself… that is your responsibility."

Gromash laughed from nearby, polishing his axe. "The girl speaks truth, human! Draken's power is like fire—use it wisely, and it lights your path. Grow arrogant, and it will burn you to ash."

Ravan quietly handed Arin a small vial filled with shimmering blue liquid. "Keep this close," he said. "I hope you never need it. But if Draken's power spirals out of control, pour a few drops onto his body—specifically over the Source Stone in his chest. Only then will it work."

Arin grasped the vial tightly. She understood her role was more than protection—she was his reality check.

Kyle looked at her. "Will you train me? Teach me how to use Draken's power without losing my soul?"

A faint smile flickered across her face before vanishing. "Very well. Then remember your first lesson—power does not lie in the weapon, but in the hand that wields it. Let's move. The road is long, and our enemies are faster."

As they approached the grand gates of the Chronos Guild, Kyle's steps felt heavy. The ancient peace of the Archives faded behind him. When they stepped out of the Council of Sovereigns, the sight before him stole his breath.

They stood upon a vast translucent blue bridge floating among the clouds. Kyle turned back once more. The magnificent towers of the Chronos Guild—built from white marble and blue crystal—glowed like gold beneath the setting sun. Massive golden chains linking the towers hummed softly in the wind.

Only hours ago, he had arrived here like a prisoner fearing death. Now he departed with a mission upon which the fate of the world rested.

"Do not look back for too long," Ravan's heavy voice called as he escorted them to the Gate of Watchmen. "History remembers those who move forward. These towers may make you feel safe—but your destiny lies within the mist and mountains ahead."

Kyle swallowed. "Ravan… will I truly return?"

Ravan placed his hand firmly on his shoulder. "That depends on whether you can endure the truths you will face. You are no longer merely human. You are Draken's Guardian. The world will test you, Umbra will try to break you—but your purity remains your greatest shield."

Gromash swung his axe impatiently. "Enough of farewells! We must reach the northern edge before nightfall. This clean air suffocates me—I crave the scent of battle!"

Arin tightened her magical bow and stepped forward. "The guild's protective barrier ends here. The path will narrow."

As they neared the final magical gate, Kyle noticed the ring pulsing more intensely the farther he moved from the guild. The 10% corruption shimmered strangely within his eyes.

At the bridge's end, he cast one last glance at the floating towers. His innocence felt buried behind them.

"Goodbye, Ravan," Kyle murmured.

Ravan did not reply—he simply inclined his masked head.

The moment Kyle, Arin, and Gromash stepped onto the rocky earth below, a sharp wind blew, and the magical bridge vanished behind a curtain of mist. Before them stretched barren mountains, dense forests, and the unknown dread guarding Draken's first fragment.

Ravan's final words echoed in Kyle's mind—"Do not fight alone."

He looked at his companions and realized this was no longer just his battle.
