Chapter 42 - Chapter-5 Harbinger

No one moved.

The battlefield around Jupiter, moments ago filled with explosions and desperate fighting, became eerily still.

Thousands of Ascendancy drones withdrew into disciplined formations, creating a vast corridor through space.

At its center stood the silver giant.

Harbinger One.

It was nearly thirty meters tall, dwarfing Sentinel and the AGE Gundam. Six crystalline wings floated freely behind its back, each rotating independently without any visible support. Violet light pulsed beneath its armor, and every sensor aboard the Federation fleet struggled to lock onto it.

"It's... disappearing from radar," Rika reported from the *Argonaut*. "No—it's there, but our sensors can't define its position."

Flint frowned at his console.

"It isn't jamming us."

He zoomed in on the data.

"...It's manipulating the space around itself."

---

Leon swallowed slowly.

"So that's what Helix was preparing us for."

Beside him, Flit remained calm.

"Stay focused."

Leon chuckled.

"You always know what to say."

"It usually works."

---

Harbinger One raised its head.

Its voice echoed across every communications frequency.

"I have observed your conflict."

"You possess courage."

A pause.

"You possess adaptation."

Another pause.

"You remain... incomplete."

Leon frowned.

"We're not interested in your opinion."

Harbinger One ignored him.

"The Helix fulfilled its function."

"The experiment concludes."

Flit's expression hardened.

"So Helix really served you."

"Served?"

For the first time, there was the faintest hint of curiosity in Harbinger One's voice.

"No."

"They were gardeners."

"They cultivated civilizations."

"They prepared those with potential."

Leon felt anger rising.

"They murdered billions."

"They accelerated evolution."

The response was so matter-of-fact that it chilled everyone listening.

---

Captain Rolf's fists clenched on the bridge.

"How can something be so detached?"

Flint answered quietly.

"Because it stopped seeing individuals a very long time ago."

---

Harbinger One slowly extended its right hand.

One of the crystalline wings drifted forward.

Energy gathered along its edges.

Leon instinctively raised Sentinel's shield.

"Something's coming!"

The crystal vanished.

Not flew.

Vanished.

It reappeared directly in front of Sentinel.

Leon barely reacted in time.

The crystal slammed into the shield with enough force to send Sentinel tumbling backward through space.

Warning alarms screamed throughout the cockpit.

"Shield integrity at sixty-two percent!"

Leon stared.

"One hit..."

---

Flit was already moving.

The AGE Gundam transformed into its high-speed configuration and opened fire with a concentrated beam barrage.

Every shot hit.

None caused damage.

The beams simply... dissolved against Harbinger One's armor.

"No effect," Flit muttered.

---

Harbinger One turned toward him.

"Acceptable analysis."

Another crystal disappeared.

Flit twisted the AGE Gundam into a tight roll just as it reappeared where his cockpit had been.

The crystal sliced cleanly through the Gundam's left shoulder.

Armor fragments scattered into space.

Warning lights flashed.

---

Leon accelerated.

"Flit!"

"I'm operational."

"You call that operational?"

"My reactor still functions."

Leon sighed.

"Of course you'd say that."

---

The two Gundams regrouped.

Harbinger One watched without pursuing.

"You coordinate efficiently."

Leon aimed Sentinel's beam rifle.

"We're just getting started."

He fired.

The shot crossed the battlefield—

And stopped.

Ten meters from Harbinger One.

Frozen.

The beam hung motionless in space before fading harmlessly away.

Leon stared in disbelief.

"...It caught a beam."

Flint's voice came over the comms.

"No."

"It stopped the particles themselves."

---

Harbinger One finally took a single step forward.

Space rippled beneath its feet.

"The difference between our civilizations..."

It looked directly at Sentinel.

"...is greater than the difference between stone tools and fusion reactors."

The statement wasn't arrogant.

It was simply factual.

---

Across the battlefield, Admiral Hayes watched in horror.

"We can't win."

Captain Rolf looked toward the tactical display.

"No."

He nodded slowly.

"Not like this."

---

Leon tightened his grip on the controls.

"I've heard that before."

He remembered the Helix.

Variable Two.

The Citadel.

Every enemy that had once seemed unbeatable.

Every one of them had fallen.

"Flit."

"I'm listening."

"We're thinking about this wrong."

Flit remained silent.

Leon continued.

"It wants us to attack it."

"...Explain."

Leon looked at the surrounding drones.

"They've stopped fighting."

"They're watching."

Flit's eyes narrowed.

"...A demonstration."

Leon smiled.

"Exactly."

"It wants to evaluate us."

Harbinger One tilted its head slightly.

"Correct."

Leon pointed Sentinel's rifle toward the massive Ascendancy flagship behind Harbinger One.

"So let's give it something unexpected."

Without another word—

Sentinel accelerated past Harbinger One.

Not toward it.

Toward the fleet.

For the first time—

Harbinger One reacted.

It moved to intercept.

Flit immediately understood Leon's plan.

He launched after Sentinel, firing continuously to force Harbinger One to divide its attention.

---

On the bridge of the *Argonaut*, Rika's eyes widened.

"They're not trying to win."

Flint smiled for the first time since the invasion began.

"They're collecting information."

---

Sentinel raced toward one of the enormous Ascendancy ships.

The ship's defenses activated instantly.

Hundreds of drones launched to intercept.

Leon grinned.

"There you are."

He wasn't trying to destroy the fleet.

He wanted to see how it responded.

Every movement.

Every defensive system.

Every weakness.

Behind him, Flit quietly recorded every second of data through the AGE Device.

---

Harbinger One appeared between Sentinel and the flagship.

"You deviate from expected engagement."

Leon answered by drawing his beam saber.

"Get used to it."

The Gundam lunged.

Harbinger One blocked effortlessly—

But this time Leon wasn't attacking the machine.

He was watching.

Feeling.

Studying the way space distorted around each movement.

The way the crystals repositioned.

The tiny delay before each teleportation.

Tiny.

Almost impossible to notice.

Almost.

---

Sentinel's AI spoke softly.

**Pattern anomaly detected.**

Leon smiled.

"There you are..."

Harbinger One stepped back.

"...You observed."

Leon didn't answer.

He couldn't exploit it yet.

But he had found something.

For the first time...

The gap between humanity and the Ascendancy didn't feel infinite.

It felt measurable.

And if it could be measured...

It could one day be overcome.

Far aboard the Ascendancy flagship, the masked commander watched the battle unfold.

"The adaptive subject continues to evolve."

Another Ascendancy officer asked,

"Should we eliminate him?"

The commander was silent for a long moment.

Finally...

"No."

"Continue the evaluation."

"If Helix was correct..."

It looked toward the white Gundam dancing through impossible odds.

"...he may become worthy."
