Chapter 10 - Ch6 - Way of Heart

Sylvie focused her dominant eye on the iron sight of the revolver — aiming at the incoming horse of abominations.

Felix on the other hand has already rushed towards the front line to confront the enemy head-on through brute force.

"Let's dance with blades!" He lunged forward at lightning speed.

"Target acquired," Sylvie signaled, locking her aim at the abominations that were rushing towards her.

She pulled the trigger, unloading the bullets inside the chamber one after another precisely into the monsters' vital body parts — slaying each of them cleanly.

At the same time, Felix was penetrating through the enemy's defenses like cutting through a block of butter with a hot iron knife.

The slain abominations that were scattered all over the places started to dissolve into small particles until they were reduced and flew where the winds blew.

"Felix, there's still a lot more of them incoming, we can't hold them off forever. Do it," Sylvie said.

Felix turned to face Sylvie and nodded — sheathing his blade back into the scabbard and embedding it in the ground.

With an ironclad grip, he twisted the hilt of the blade 35° clockwise.

"Initiate Unit-Iudex TYPE 1, admin clearance authorized."

He slowly unsheathed the blade from the scabbard. It glowed a dim gray light and radiated black particles around the blade, like a beating heart, as it let out an eerie screeching sound.

The glowing blade was raised on his shoulder level behind his back.

"Containment protocol; Evernight Crescent. Execute!"

With a powerful swing, the sword released a crescent-shaped energy that cut through the air towards the horde of monsters.

Every enemy on the crescent's path evaporated into less than an atom. Yet the mundane human structures were not harmed in the slightest.

"The road is clear, now is our chance to find the Heart of Singularity," Felix said to Sylvie, pulling out the scabbard from the ground, and sheathing his sword.

Sylvie slowly approached him from behind, her gaze was focused on the signal displayed on the briefcase.

"I've analyzed the source of the Singularity in this area, it's in the underground metro station in this district." She closed the briefcase.

"We should hurry before the next wave of abomination begins." She suggested.

Felix however just sighed in lack of interest.

"I guess we'll be running then." He sighs.

"Very well, let's chase some timeline viruses." He led the way towards the metro followed by Sylvie behind him.

Sylvie looked around at the building around them while they ran.

"Felix." She called out.

"What's up?"

"Don't you think these buildings look familiar?" She asked.

Felix looked around at the buildings.

"Hm, when you mentioned it, this place reminds me of London." He looked up and saw a signboard.

"There! 221B Baker Street. That's in London right?" Felix pointed at a rusting signboard hanging on a pole.

"But I'm curious, why do you ask, sis?"

Sylvie didn't say anything for a few while, she just kept on running from behind, occasionally falling in step with her brother.

"It's nothing.. but I'm feeling uneasy about this place. Forget it. It must've been my imagination, don't look too much into it." She admitted.

Felix slowed down his pace and looked into his sister's eyes. They say eyes are the window to the soul, yet after years of work since childhood, the soul no longer reflects the mind.

Slowly, he took her hand in his, intertwining their fingers as he led her across the streets of London.

Sylvie's eyes widened a bit at her brother's sudden act. But she didn't make any effort to pull away despite everything and allowed him to guide her.

The siblings ran for a while longer until they finally reached the entrance to the Metropolitan Railway.

There wasn't a single soul there and the quiet ambient from the shallow metro was loud and deafening.

Felix was first to enter, followed by his sister. They kept their hands resting on their weapons, ready to strike at any moment of unpleasantries.

The metro station was completely deserted and resembled an abandoned building. Newspapers were scattered everywhere and there were traces of blood on the wall.

"Syl, scan the surroundings, see if there's any traces of biological entities or life. I'm afraid there might be casualties."

She nodded.

"Already on it." She replied, pressing a button on the briefcase.

The briefcase emitted a sound wave that echoed through the empty metro.

Felix approached the traces of blood on the wall — he carefully examined them using his gloved fingers.

"This is fresh blood.." he muttered and turned to Sylvie.

"Anything on your end, sis?"

Sylvie shook her head, her eyes never leaving the monitor.

"Negative, I can't pick up any biological activity in this place. It seems everyone involved evacuated safely with minor injuries," she explained.

Left with no clue, the siblings continue to investigate the dark underground station.

Occasionally, they encountered rats feeding on the food that was left behind during the evacuation. But Felix just kicked them out of the way with ease while Sylvie hid behind him.

Thus, they continued on their way to search for the heart.

A moment later, Sylvie saw something glowing a bright red up ahead.

"Felix, look." She pointed.

"That must be the heart. Ready to engage." She reached for her weapon.

"Affirmative." He unsheathed his own sword and quickened his paces.

The red light radiating from the heart glowed brighter as the two approached the heart.

The heart was a massive blob of flesh known as the Seed of Singularity. It doesn't have a smell, but it occasionally twitches in the motion of a beating heart.

Felix's sword gleamed in the red light, as he ran faster towards the heart.

But before he could reach it, the glowing heart let out a powerful demonic groan that threw him off guard and sent him stumbling backwards.

Felix skidded on the ground — but he quickly regained his footing before he fell.

"Tch." He curses under his breath.

Suddenly, the heart twitched wildly as something crawled out of the heart. It tears open the flesh like a cocoon and emerges from the bloodless pile of meat.

"Sylvie! Watch out!" Felix warned.

They both back away and distance themselves from the emerging abominations.

"The Singularity reading is way too high! This isn't a normal abomination.. this is a Heart Core!" Sylvie exclaimed.
