Chapter 19 - Uncover the Conspiracy

In the faculty viewing box, hidden in shadows, Myra watched.

She'd seen everything.

The accusation. The duel. Seraphina's defense.

Her fingers tightened on the railing.

Someone set him up. Someone who knows his schedule. Who knows he can't reveal our training.

Whoever it was had planned this carefully.

Too carefully.

Myra's eyes glowed faintly.

They just made a very big mistake.

No one fucked with her students.

She'd find out who was behind this.

And when she did...

Well.

There were worse things than death for people who crossed an S-rank mage.

That evening, Lucian sat in his dorm room, staring at the system notification.

[NEXT FATE CORRECTION: Severity will increase]

Lucian leaned back.

Someone I've met. Someone who knows me well enough to set this up.

The list wasn't long.

His family? Marcus? Someone else entirely?

A knock at his door interrupted his thoughts.

He opened it.

Aria stood there.

Looking... conflicted.

"Can I come in?"

"Of course."

She entered, and Lucian closed the door.

For a moment, neither spoke.

"I don't know what to believe," Aria said finally. "Cassian says you're dangerous. That girl says you hurt her. But you... you don't seem like someone who'd do that."

"I didn't," Lucian said firmly. "I wasn't even there."

"Then where were you?"

The question everyone keeps asking.

"I can't say. Not yet. But I wasn't with her."

Aria studied his face.

Searching for... something.

"Seraphina says she saw you on the other side of campus. That the timeline doesn't work."

"She's right."

"Then why won't you just explain where you were?"

"Because..." Lucian sighed. "Because the truth would create more problems than it solves right now."

Aria was quiet for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

"Okay."

"Okay?"

"I believe you." She smiled softly. "I don't understand. And I wish you'd trust me with the truth. But... I believe you didn't hurt that girl."

[AFFECTION INCREASED]

Aria Lighthollow: 15 → 25

Status: Intrigued → Trusting

New Thought: "He's hiding something, but his eyes don't lie. He's not a predator."

"Thank you," Lucian said.

"Don't thank me yet." Aria's expression turned serious. "Cassian won't let this go. He thinks you're dangerous. And when Cassian decides someone is a threat..."

"He doesn't give up?"

"Never."

She moved toward the door, then paused.

"Be careful, Lucian. Whatever you're hiding... I hope it's worth the cost."

Then she was gone.

Lucian closed the door and leaned against it.

Two heroines believe in me. One is investigating silently. The protagonist sees me as an enemy. And my secret mentor is probably planning murder.

He laughed.

Quietly. Almost hysterically.

This is fine. Everything is fine.

The system chimed.

[NEW QUEST UNLOCKED]

"Uncover the Conspiracy"

Someone is targeting you. Find out who before the next Fate Correction strikes.

Reward: +100 Fate Points, Truth Revealed, Potential Ally Gained

Time Limit: 7 Days

Lucian stared at the notification.

Seven days to find out who framed him.

Before the story tried to destroy him again.

Challenge accepted.

But he couldn't do it alone.

He needed help. Real help. From someone who actually knew what they were doing.

His thoughts went to Myra.

S-rank mage. Experienced. Connected to people and information he couldn't access.

If anyone could help him navigate this mess, it was her.

She'd probably know who has the power to orchestrate something like this. Or at least point me in the right direction.

He sat up, decision made.

Then immediately hesitated.

Going to her quarters. At night. To ask for help.

He could already imagine how she'd react.

That shameless grin. Those inappropriate comments. The way she'd find a way to make everything about—

No. Don't think about it. Just... go. Ask for help. Leave quickly.

Simple plan.

Probably doomed to involve some kind of humiliation.

But necessary.

"Fuck it," he muttered, getting out of bed.

He threw on his uniform jacket and headed for the door.

I'm going to regret this. I know I'm going to regret this.

But I need answers more than I need dignity right now.

He stepped into the hallway.

The academy was quiet at this hour. Most students already asleep.

Perfect for moving unseen.

He took the route toward the faculty wing, cutting through the training grounds—faster and less likely to run into patrols.

Just get there. Ask your questions. Try not to die of embarrassment when she makes it weird. Which she will.

She absolutely will.

He sighed.

Why is the only person who can help me also the most insufferable person I know?

He was so focused on mentally preparing for Myra's inevitable teasing that he almost didn't notice when the temperature dropped.

Sharply.

Unnaturally.

His breath misted in the suddenly cold air.

What the—

A presence materialized behind him.

Not walked. Not appeared.

Just... was.

Lucian spun, hand going to his practice sword.

A figure stood in the shadows.

Hooded. Cloaked in darkness that seemed to swallow light.

Its face—if it had one—was hidden.

But its voice...

Low. Distorted. Wrong.

"Lucian Valemont."

Every instinct screamed danger.

"Who are you?"
