"My knight can probably hold out for a minute. Maybe. Your wolf needs to be ready by then."

Round one. Both sides' cards were already clashing in the center of the field.

Jake's Greystone Sword Master was fighting one against two — Sophie's Sword Master and Lily's Water Servant — and after just a few exchanges, he was already in deep trouble.

One-on-two was simply too much to ask.

"Yeah," Ethan said calmly. "Just give me that minute."

He had a solid read on Big Big Wolf's crafting speed by now. Before the match, he'd asked the wolf if he could build a mech inside of sixty seconds. Big Big Wolf had said no problem.

The minute ticked past. The round ended. Jake's knight dissolved into starlight right on cue.

"Sit tight," Ethan told him. "Save your psionic for a Tier 2 card later. I've got this."

Jake had already been reaching for his next card. He stopped. "You sure? They each summoned another card this round. That's four against whatever you've got."

"I'm sure."

Ethan drew a card.

The illustration showed a small mechanical monkey with bright red plating, cybernetic joints, and glowing magnetic orbs embedded in his palms. His mouth was frozen mid-smirk — the kind of expression that said I'm about to do something awesome, and you're going to watch. A thin tail with a spiked tip curled behind him.

[Card Name]: Sparx

[Quality]: Purple (Epic)

[Rank]: Tier 1

[Type]: Summoning Card

[Story System]: Hyperforce

[Cost]: 100 Psionic Energy

[Effect]: Summons Sparx.

[Trait]:Ego Boost — When promised an audience to impress or bragging rights, combat power increases by 100%–1000%.

[Evaluation]:"I'm Sparx — the best-looking, hardest-hitting monkey in the Hyperforce. You're welcome."

On paper, Sparx's base strength shouldn't have qualified for Purple. He was only a Tier 1 card, and his magnetic powers alone weren't that remarkable at this rank.

But the card had a hidden edge the stat sheet didn't fully convey: Sparx was a born mech pilot. In the Hyperforce, every team member controlled a section of the Super Robot — and Sparx's was the Fist Rocket. Put him in a cockpit, and he went from loudmouth to lethal.

The moment Sparx materialized, Big Big Wolf stepped out from the scrap yard.

And behind him stood a mech.

It was over thirteen feet tall, painted in dark gunmetal, with one oversized mechanical fist mounted on the right arm and thrusters bolted to the back. The design was unmistakably Big Big Wolf's — the same rough aesthetic he brought to everything, complete with wolf-paw insignias stamped on the shoulders. But the silhouette was different from anything the wolf would've come up with on his own. Broader. Built for a pilot.

This was the Fist Rocket — or rather, a simplified junkyard version of it.

The idea had come to Ethan at home. He'd realized that Big Big Wolf could build a mech to Sparx's specifications if given the right blueprints. So he'd sketched out the Fist Rocket's design from memory and shown it to Big Big Wolf during a summoning session. The wolf, being a genius inventor, had memorized it instantly.

So the play was simple: deploy Big Big Wolf, command him to build the Fist Rocket from the scrap yard, then deploy Sparx to pilot it.

A two-card combo that turned junk into a war machine.

"Holy crap — is that a MECH?" Jake's jaw dropped. Last round, watching Big Big Wolf build personal equipment in forty seconds had been impressive enough. But a mech? In one minute? From garbage?

"What did you even summon this time? A robot monkey?"

"Don't underestimate him," Ethan called out. "He's our ace." Then, louder: "Sparx! Wolfie's mech is ready — get in!"

Sparx turned, spotted the mech, and his magnetic eyes flared bright. He cracked his knuckles and sprinted over. "Not bad, Wolfie! Kinda looks like my Fist Rocket back home — if my Fist Rocket was built by a wolf in a junkyard!"

"Naturally!" Big Big Wolf lifted his chin with pride. "This Great King is a genius inventor! Show a little respect!"

He triggered the hatch release. The cockpit opened with a hydraulic hiss.

The two of them had already met during Ethan's practice summons at home, so there was zero awkwardness. Sparx vaulted into the pilot seat with the ease of someone who'd done this a thousand times, the hatch sealed shut, and the mech's observation window lit up with a red glow.

In the spectator seats, Sophie and Lily watched with identical expressions of bewilderment.

"What is that thing?" Sophie said. "I've never seen a single card Ethan's played."

Lily's frown deepened. "Doesn't matter what it is. We have to fight it."

She gave the order, and the four Tier 1 cards on the field converged on the mech from all sides.

Sophie's second Tier 1 card was Snow White's Prince — fairy tale system, silver short sword, fast but fragile.

Lily had added Wolf Granny — also fairy tale, tattered cloak, wooden staff.

"Sparx!" Ethan shouted toward the mech. "Take care of these four, and when I summon you back, you can tell Nova AND Gibson exactly how you did it. Every. Single. Detail."

The observation window blazed brighter. Sparx's voice echoed out of the cockpit speakers, practically vibrating with excitement:

"DEAL! Oh, they are gonna hear about this for WEEKS!"

[Sparx's combat power increased by 100%]

The notification flashed across Ethan's display.

He couldn't help but grin. He'd deliberately set Sparx's story during the early arcs — when the red monkey was still showing off for Nova at every opportunity and trying to one-up Gibson in anything remotely competitive. The promise of a captive audience was worth more to Sparx than cold hard cash.

Ethan had always thought Sparx and Nova were the real endgame pairing of the show. He'd die on that hill.

"His combat power just went up?" Jake stared at the notification, dumbfounded. "You bribe him with bragging rights and he gets stronger? What kind of card is this? Do you have a whole zoo of robot monkeys hiding back there?"

"More or less. But we won't need them."

The mech moved.

"Let's go, baby!" Sparx threw the controls forward. The mech broke into a heavy, ground-shaking stride.

Sophie's Greystone Sword Master was the first to engage. He swung his iron sword at the mech's knee joint — and the blade bounced off the armor plating with a sharp clang, leaving a fresh notch in the steel.

"That's all you've got?" Sparx sneered from the cockpit. "I've fought giant monsters in a robot the size of a skyscraper, pal!"

The mech lifted one massive foot and kicked.

The Sword Master scrambled backward, but the sheer air pressure from the kick knocked him staggering. His armor buckled across the chest.

Lily's Water Servant released a wave of mist, trying to slow the mech down — but the moment it touched the hull, it slid right off. Big Big Wolf had applied a waterproof coating during construction.

"No effect?" Lily's expression hardened. "Wolf Granny — cloak! Snow White's Prince — hit the thrusters from behind!"

Wolf Granny raised her staff. Her tattered cloak shot upward and expanded, swooping toward the mech like a massive net. This was her signature skill — using the cloak to bind targets. A creative addition by whoever had originally designed the card; the fairy tale source material alone wouldn't have made the card competitively viable.

Snow White's Prince circled behind the mech, silver sword aimed at the thruster vents.

"Parlor tricks." Sparx crossed the mech's arms. A translucent shield erupted from the chest plate — magnetic energy, crackling faintly at the edges. The cloak slammed into the barrier and rebounded instantly, snapping back into its original shape.

Simultaneously, the rear thrusters fired a short burst of gas. The mech sidestepped — just enough to dodge the Prince's stab from behind.

"My turn."

The mech's oversized fist swung in a devastating arc while the left arm lashed out with a backhand. Two impacts — one at the Greystone Sword Master, one at Snow White's Prince.

The Sword Master had just regained his footing. No time to dodge. The fist hit him dead center, and he dissolved into starlight.

The Prince tried to run. Too slow. The backhand caught him across the shoulders. He lost his balance, crashed to the ground, his silver sword clattering away. He struggled — once, twice — then faded into starlight.

"My Sword Master!" Sophie gripped the edge of the spectator platform.

She'd had 200 Psionic this round — just enough for two Tier 1 summons. Both were gone. The situation had flipped completely.

"Wolf Granny — charge him with your staff!" Lily commanded. "Water Servant — concentrate your flow and hit the viewport!"

Wolf Granny scooped up her staff and rushed the mech. The Water Servant compressed into a high-pressure stream, aimed straight at the mech's head.

Sparx dodged the water blast with a lateral pivot, then kicked. Wolf Granny went flying. She hit the ground hard, lost her staff — and before she could stand, the mech's fist hovered over her, casting a long shadow.

"Surrender?" Sparx's voice dripped with arrogance. "Smart move. Tell your friends about me."

She tried to resist. The fist dropped. Her body flickered — and she dissolved into starlight.

One target left. The Water Servant.

"Finish it," Ethan called. "Then go straight for the crystal."

"Roger that, boss!"

The mech walked toward the Water Servant. It tried to flow away. One stomp, and it flattened into a puddle that shimmered once and vanished.

"Four Tier 1 cards," Jake whispered, swallowing hard. "Just... gone." He'd been worried four-on-one wouldn't be enough. He'd massively overthought it. "That mech is absurd."

Sophie and Lily's expressions were grim.

"First-tier cards can't even scratch it," Sophie said, biting her lip.

"Don't panic," Lily said, steadying herself. "Round four. Once we hit 500 Psionic, I'll summon The Venomancer. We can still fight this."

But then — the mech shuddered.

A harsh crackling sound erupted from its joints. The limbs began jerking erratically. The observation window dimmed.

"Uh — what's happening?" Sparx's voice came through, confused. "Why isn't this hunk of junk responding?"

"The mech is a simplified build," Ethan said, unsurprised. "It can't handle sustained high-intensity combat. This was bound to happen."

"Simplified?" Jake's eyes bugged out. "If this is simplified, what does the full version look like?"

One of the mech's legs detached and hit the ground with a metallic crash. The machine listed sideways, half-kneeling. The magnetic shield flickered out. Black smoke started pouring from the hull.

Broken. Definitively.

"Are you kidding me?" Sparx hammered the controls inside the cockpit. Nothing. "Ethan, the mech's toast! You STILL owe me bragging rights. Crashing doesn't count as losing!"

"It doesn't! Get out of there!"

Sophie exhaled. "There's our opening. Hold on — round four will give us enough to fight back."

Sparx popped the hatch, backflipped out, and landed in a crouch. His tail twitched irritably as he sprinted back toward friendly territory. "Wolfie, your engineering needs work!"

Big Big Wolf emerged from the scrap yard, looking sheepish. "Well... it was built from garbage."

He'd already constructed a second mech — Nova's Fist Rocket — and had it standing by. But since Sophie and Lily weren't deploying, Ethan held off on summoning its pilot.

"Stand down for now, both of you," Ethan ordered. "We'll wait."

Big Big Wolf nodded and retreated with Sparx.

Round two and three passed in a tense stalemate. Neither side committed. Psionic Energy climbed.

Then round four hit. 500 Psionic on both sides.

"Finally!" Lily pulled out her card. "Summon — The Venomancer!"

The hooded figure materialized in the center of the field, already in motion. The Venomancer's agility was outstanding — she closed the distance toward Ethan's side with frightening speed.

Sophie followed: "Healing Flower Fairy — deploy and prepare for support!"

"I can't match that," Jake said, glancing at his hand. "You got this?"

"Already on it." Ethan drew three cards at once — one Tier 2, two Tier 1.

Light erupted.

A red device clattered to the ground. Beside it stood a boy in a blue t-shirt and yellow shorts, goggles pushed up on his forehead. And next to him, a small yellow dinosaur barely up to his waist.

Taichi Yagami. And Agumon.

[Card Name]: Agumon — Purple, Tier 2

[Card Name]: Taichi Yagami — Purple, Tier 1

[Card Name]: Digivice (Courage) — Blue, Tier 1

"A little dinosaur?" Sophie tilted her head. "It doesn't look all that threatening."

Lily shared the confusion but didn't hesitate. "Take those two out first."

The Venomancer swept forward, unleashing a cloud of toxic purple mist.

"Agumon, watch out!" Taichi shouted, gripping his Digivice.

"On it!" Agumon took a breath and blasted a ball of orange fire directly into the incoming poison cloud.

The flames collided with the mist — and burned it clean away.

"It can burn through my poison?" Lily's eyes widened.

From the sidelines, Ethan explained quietly to Jake: "Agumon's Digital Flame runs at an extremely high temperature. And when all three of these cards are deployed together, they trigger a special combo effect."

As if on cue, the Digivice in Taichi's hand erupted with blinding light. Text scrolled across the tiny screen:

"Agumon — DIGIVOLVE!"

"Digivolve?" Every person watching the match said it at the same time.

None of them had ever seen a card transform mid-battle.

Agumon's body began to grow. White light enveloped him, stretching upward, expanding outward. When the glow faded, a massive dinosaur stood on the field — towering over every other unit, a horned shell crowning its head.

[Agumon → Greymon]

"What — what kind of mechanic is this?" Jake could barely form words. "Cards can evolve? Since when? I've literally never seen this in my entire life!"

"Greymon — take them down!" Taichi gave the order before Ethan even had to.

"ROOOOAAAR!"

Greymon charged. The ground shook under its feet.

The Venomancer threw out another wave of poison mist. Greymon inhaled — and breathed a torrent of fire that annihilated the poison before it could spread.

"My poison is that useless?" The Venomancer staggered back, genuine shock on her face.

Poison was her entire identity. Without it, she was a first-rate fighter at best — nowhere near the top.

Greymon opened its jaws again. A massive fireball — blisteringly bright — launched directly at The Venomancer.

She tried to dodge. But her moment of disbelief had cost her a fraction of a second, and that fraction was everything.

The fireball hit her full in the chest. Her body ignited instantly. A piercing scream — and she dissolved into starlight.

Intelligence was an advantage of Purple cards. But it was also a weakness. Because having a mind meant you could hesitate. And hesitation, in a fight, was death.

The Healing Flower Fairy saw The Venomancer go down and turned to flee in panic.

Greymon covered the distance in three strides. One swipe of its claw — the Flower Fairy's Petal Shield shattered like glass. She tumbled through the air and dissolved before she hit the ground.

"That's... everything." Sophie's shoulders dropped. Round four's Psionic had been just enough for one Tier 3 and one Tier 2 summon. Both gone in seconds. "There's nothing left to play."

Lily closed her eyes briefly. "An evolving card. That's beyond anything I've seen. Tier 3 cards can't even handle it."

Greymon lumbered toward the opposing crystals.

Sparx, who'd been leaning casually against Ethan's crystal with his arms crossed, cupped his hands around his mouth: "Ethan! You BETTER summon me back later so I can tell everyone about this! I want Nova, Gibson — hell, bring Antauri too!"

"I won't forget," Ethan called back, grinning. "Greymon — hit the crystals."

Sophie still had some Psionic left. But summoning Tier 1 cards against Greymon would be throwing resources into a bonfire.

Neither she nor Lily deployed again. They didn't even bother. The gap was too wide.

[Match Over — Ethan Cole & Jake Porter Win]

The Battle Space dissolved. The training room rematerialized around them.

Jake practically tackled Ethan. "That was insane! Your deck is broken beyond belief! And that monkey — he fights harder for bragging rights? In the middle of a fight?"

Ethan pushed him off. "It's his thing."

Sophie and Lily walked over. They still looked a bit shell-shocked.

"Are all of those original cards?" Lily asked, studying Ethan's face. "I've never encountered a single one before."

"Yeah, they're all custom. But the main reason I won so cleanly is that your decks happened to be hard-countered by mine," Ethan said honestly. "If either of you had flying-type Tier 1 cards, the mech wouldn't have been nearly as effective."

Sophie nodded slowly. "That's true. Our decks don't have answers for unconventional threats. We'll need to adjust." She paused. "But those cards are genuinely powerful. Sparx and Greymon — both Purple?"

"Agumon is Tier 2, Sparx is Tier 1," Ethan confirmed.

Lily shook her head. "It's absurd. My Venomancer is a Tier 3 Purple, and she couldn't even compete with a Tier 2."

"Different systems," Ethan said with a shrug. "Your Venomancer is built entirely around poison. That's a devastating kit — unless you run into something with high-temperature fire that literally burns the poison out of the air. And if she'd had better mobility — real speed, maybe flight — Greymon might never have landed a hit."
