The kitchen in the Grant household felt smaller than usual, the air thick with the domestic hum of a morning that didn't realize it was about to change history. Riley sat at the wooden table, his fork scraping rhythmically against a plate of eggs he could barely taste. Beside him, the sunlight cut through the steam of Sofia's tea, casting long, sharp shadows that seemed to point toward the stairs—and the gear waiting above.
Aria didn't walk into the room; she detonated.
"GOOD MORNING WORLD! TODAY WE BECOME LEGENDS!"
Mrs. Grant didn't even look up from the stove. She'd long ago reached a state of zen-like acceptance regarding Aria's volume. "Sit. Eat. No shouting," she commanded, sliding a plate of toast toward the girl.
Aria plopped into her chair, vibrating so hard the silverware rattled. Sofia, meanwhile, was hunched over her mug like a weary traveler at a roadside inn. "You're loud," she croaked.
"I'm ALIVE!" Aria countered, her grin wide enough to be a hazard.
Riley caught his mother's eye. She looked at the three of them—her son, his sister, and the girl who had essentially been annexed into the family—and her expression softened. "Big day?"
"Yeah," Riley said, a forced calmness in his voice. "The dungeon opens."
"Be safe," she said, her voice dropping the maternal authority for a second. "And don't bully people."
"Mum," Riley groaned, but he felt the warmth of it.
"Don't worry," Aria said through a mouthful of toast. "We only bully monsters."
The breakfast was a blur. They moved with a synchronized urgency, clearing plates and racing up the stairs like they were being chased. In the quiet of his room, Riley pulled on his headset. The familiar weight settled over his temples, the haptic sensors humming against his skin.
"Helmets ready?" he called out.
"Let's go," Aria's voice came, muffled through her own gear.
Darkness took him for a heartbeat, and then the world exploded into color.
Dawnview Village materialized around them, the air smelling of digital pine and woodsmoke. Riley's party was already gathered by the fountain, looking like a collection of mismatched heroes. Hayes stood like a statue, his shield planted in the dirt, while the three kids—Kalyani, Jonathan, and Rezion—shifted their weight, their eyes darting around at the massive crowds.
"We trained all night," Jonathan said, bowing so low he nearly tripped. "We're Level 5. All of us."
"They worked hard," Hayes confirmed, a rare note of pride in his voice.
Aria marched up to them, hands on her hips. "They better have! Today we carry our legacy into the burning maw of destiny!"
Kalyani leaned toward Sofia. "Is she always like this?"
"Yes," Sofia sighed. "Just let it happen."
The trek through the village was a nightmare of noise. Players were standing on stone walls, screaming for healers, offering silver, and desperately trying to lure anyone with a high-level spirit. Andy Lendrim was there, surrounded by a dozen players who looked like they were ready to worship his Skyrazor Falcon if it meant a spot in his group.
"Everyone's so desperate," Rezion whispered, pulling his icy husky closer.
"They're playing the odds," Riley said, his eyes fixed on the path ahead. "We're playing the game."
Then, the Grove appeared.
It was a massive, ancient tree that seemed to have swallowed a stone temple whole. Glowing green runes pulsed like a slow heartbeat against the bark, and as they approached, a massive system-wide chime rang out, announcing that the Dawnview Grove Dungeon was now open.
The crowd surged forward, but Riley stepped into the activation circle first. The UI flickered to life, hovering in the air like a sheet of blue glass. It offered three choices: Easy, Normal, or Hard.
"Riley," Hayes warned, his voice low. "This is our first run. Maybe we should—"
Riley's finger moved before Hayes could finish. He tapped Hard.
The world seemed to lurch. The blue light of the UI turned a deep, threatening violet.
"HARD?!" Aria shrieked, her voice cracking. "BRO. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
Sofia's eyes went wide, and the three kids looked like they were ready to log out right there. Even Lumi let out a sharp, confused chirp from Riley's shoulder.
"We prepared for this," Riley said, turning to face his team. The fear in their eyes was real, but underneath it, he saw the trust they had placed in him. "We have the potions, we have the synergy, and we have the knowledge. If we want the First Clear, we don't take the easy path."
He looked at Aria. "Start recording. The forums are going to want to see this."
Aria's panic vanished, replaced by the predatory gleam of a content creator. "Oh, this is going to be gold," she muttered, hitting the record button.
The stone doors groaned, a sound like grinding teeth, and swung inward. A wave of cold, shimmering green light spilled out, smelling of damp earth and ancient magic. Riley took the first step, his boots echoing on the stone. One by one, the others followed, their nervous energy hardening into focus.
The team crossed the threshold, leaving the sun-drenched village behind for the violet shadows of Hard Mode.
