Chapter 52 - ???

The golem waved its massive arm, smashing down amidst the rising dust toward the Mages on the ground who appeared as small as ants.

Seeing that their attacks were ineffective, the crowd deployed layer upon layer of Defensive Magic barriers, attempting to block the sweeping giant arm.

Witnessing this, Lerne smiled contemptuously. His golem was not only buffed with various enhancement magics but was also composed of a massive amount of medium; the current, old-fashioned Defensive Magic simply could not stop it.

"This batch isn't worth watching. If they cast a chaotic joint Defensive Magic, they might have been able to contend with it, but it's a pity these fools only care about themselves."

On the edge of the field, Serie, who was sitting cross-legged on the ground with her head propped up by one hand, let out a yawn, her interest waning.

As soon as the words fell, wails rang out from below.

The Defensive Magic shattered inch by inch upon impact. The wind pressure alone, generated by the swing of the golem's giant arm, sent those Mages on the ground flying several meters away.

The Mages, their staffs knocked from their hands and lying on the ground, felt pain all over their bodies and lost the strength to stand up.

Lerne had not let the golem directly smash those Mages; otherwise, they would have long since turned into meat paste.

Yet, this single strike eliminated ten Third-Class Mages.

Seizing the interval while he controlled the golem, the Mages flying in the sky launched a surprise attack on Lerne.

Another wave of varied elemental offensive magic—fire, lightning, ice, and even toxins—painted the sky in a brilliant display.

"Hmph, fools who don't know how to adapt."

Defensive Magic instantly unfolded around his body. Under the offensive of over a dozen people using different magics, Lerne's Defensive Magic remained completely undamaged.

This was a new type of Defensive Magic specifically designed to defend against Killing Magic; its intensity was several times higher than previous versions.

Raising the broad staff in his hand, a wind vortex rapidly condensed in the sky.

The Mages in the sky, who still intended to continue casting magic, only felt a suction force pull at them. Their floating figures became unstable, and their magic shots went wide one after another.

The wind vortex gradually expanded, turning into a black and white cyclone. The bodies of the Mages in the sky, unable to control themselves, were sucked into it one by one.

Storm Magic!

"It's over, then." Lerne shook his head.

Impulsiveness, singular combat styles, lack of mobility... these Third-Class Mages were still far from reaching the strength of the Second Class.

As the Chief of the Continental Magic Association, Lerne arrogantly believed that the final result would just be him crushing newbies alone. Not a single guy's magic level could even graze the corner of his clothes.

Moments later, the storm gradually dissipated.

The Mages, who had been turned upside down in the storm and had already fainted, slowly fell to the ground.

While dispelling the storm, Lerne also released a few wisps of wind magic to let these examinees land smoothly.

The massive mud-stone golem carried Lerne, standing erect like a towering pagoda.

"It's over. None of them passed."

Lerne shouted toward the middle-aged man and Serie on the sidelines. As his gaze turned toward Serie, his eyes were full of pride and respect.

"It's not over yet."

On the field where Mages lay scattered and dust rose everywhere, a young girl's firm voice rang out.

Lerne was startled, the middle-aged man looked thoughtful, and Serie raised an eyebrow.

Yuna stood amidst the fallen Mages, holding a staff as bright red as a spear. The tip of the staff pointed at Lerne, declaring her existence.

Looking at that staff in Yuna's hand, Serie felt inexplicably uncomfortable all over.

What was wrong with her? It was just a relatively rare staff.

The girl before her possessed only half of Lerne's mana, and the other Mages had already been subdued by Lerne. Serie was somewhat curious about how the girl would fight under such a disadvantage.

Lerne also looked toward Yuna; there was actually a fish that had slipped through the net.

"Then let's end this quickly."

As he spoke, the golem stretched out its palm and grabbed toward Yuna.

Facing the massive palm coming head-on, Yuna pushed off hard with her feet. Buffed by levitation magic, she passed through the gaps between the fingers and landed on the golem's arm. She began running rapidly along that arm, which was as thick as two people, her gaze fixed straight on Lerne at the top.

Lerne was stunned. He had thought the girl would also use Defensive Magic and offensive magic to clash head-on, but he hadn't expected her agility to be so flexible.

Right then, he developed a slight interest in Yuna.

Several magic circles unfolded around him, and fireball after fireball surged out, pouring down toward Yuna who was running below.

This was the most basic fireball spell, but it won out in quantity.

Yuna channeled mana into her staff. The originally dark red staff instantly turned bright crimson, and the spear-like tip refracted a daunting red light under the sun.

Wielding the staff like a spear, she sliced apart and scattered the fireballs one by one. At the same time, the stone arm beneath her feet began to shake, seemingly trying to throw Yuna off.

Seeing this, Yuna thrust her staff downward. Like a pole vaulter, her entire body gyrated in the air as she launched herself upwards from her spot.

The fireballs adjusted their angles and shot toward Yuna once again.

In mid-air, Yuna urged the levitation and flight magic, stabilizing her figure in the air. Because she wasn't very skilled, she could only hover simply.

A polygonal shield of Defensive Magic unfolded, intercepting the fireballs.

Yuna did not cast excessive Defensive Magic; this was to save mana. After a brief thought, she waved her staff. As the Defensive Magic was dispelled, the moisture in the air rapidly condensed, turning into a small column of water that smashed toward the fireballs.

Accompanied by "sizzling" sounds, a cloud of steam rose in mid-air, enveloping Yuna within it.

Lerne narrowed his eyes. Lacking vision, he didn't smash wildly with fireballs anymore. Instead, he conserved mana and quietly waited for Yuna's next move.

In an instant, a figure darted out from within the smoke.

Yuna, casting Killing Magic in reverse to utilize the recoil, flew toward Lerne standing atop the golem like a bullet. Her palm opened, and she hurled the Severance Magic she had been condensing for a long time!

The well-prepared Lerne unfolded his Defensive Magic, while simultaneously, one of the golem's palms extended to block the front. With this double protection, Lerne was extremely confident.

"Sever!"

Looking at the arm made of mud, stone, and over a dozen enhancement magics blocking in front of her, Yuna shouted loudly in mid-air.

In a flash, Yuna recalled the task Nanoda had given her back then. She had already cut through that giant rock the height of a person; the stone before her was nothing to fear! She could imagine it—the image of the stone being cut apart!

An invisible slash split the golem's palm in two, and shattered clumps of earth scattered from the sky.

"How is this possible?!" Lerne's pupils constricted.

Yuna raised her staff and stabbed it straight onto Lerne's Defensive Magic. It was the latest version of Defensive Magic, yet accompanied by Yuna clenching her teeth and exerting force, cracks actually began to appear!

Just as the two sides were locked in a contest of strength.

From the side, the golem's other fist suddenly smashed over. Caught somewhat off guard, Yuna turned her staff to block, and her entire person was smashed from the air toward the ground.
