Chapter 37 - Poison

"Lektire!"

A man's shout came from the distance, and a look of joy appeared on little Lektire's face.

"Big Sister, my father has come to find me."

She turned back, but Nanoda's figure was nowhere to be seen.

"Eh? Where is Big Sister?"

To avoid unnecessary trouble, Nanoda did not want to meet Glück for the time being. She had already obtained quite important intelligence; barring any accidents, she would have a chance to obtain clues about Macht of the Golden Land.

Late at night, the lights were still on in the office of the Lord's Manor.

Nanoda pushed the door open quietly and entered. A strong aroma of coffee wafted over, making Nanoda, who was already a bit sleepy, feel even drowsier.

"So, did something happen recently? This is the first time you've called me over in the middle of the night."

Aaron took a sip of coffee, looking mysterious.

"Why don't you take a guess?"

"I'm not listening to a riddler. I'm going back to sleep."

"Eh, don't, I was just joking."

"Then I was joking too. Speak, what exactly is going on."

Putting away his joking attitude, Aaron's expression became serious.

"Recently, a batch of strange goods has flowed into Gaderia Territory from foreign merchants. It's a type of special effect magic potion."

"Magic potion?"

As a substitute for priests who possess healing and various support abilities, magic potions are very popular among adventurers, especially healing-type potions.

Clack. A glass bottle only the size of a thumb was placed on the table. Looking closely, it contained a bright red liquid, looking like a small ruby under the light.

"So, what is the effect of this thing?"

Nanoda picked up the magic potion and examined it but couldn't make heads or tails of it.

"Enhancement of strength and recovery. Can you imagine that after drinking it, you will gain double the strength, and wounds during battle will also heal slowly on their own?"

"Eh, that exaggerated? One magic potion can possess two powerful effects?"

Shaking the inconspicuous glass bottle, Nanoda felt it was incredible.

"This single bottle is worth ten gold coins."

"So expensive. That's enough for a commoner to live on for half a lifetime."

"More than that. Recently, several vicious assault incidents have occurred in Gaderia."

"Related to this medicine?"

Seeing that Nanoda keenly sensed something, Aaron nodded.

"The perpetrators all have one thing in common: they have all drunk this potion, and they desire this potion very much, craving it to the point of losing their reason. But if they are supplied with the magic potion, guess what? They will return to normal."

"This is basically a poison, isn't it?"

Looking at the magic potion in her hand, Nanoda felt a chill.

"I have already asked physicians familiar with pharmaceuticals to check it. Their answer to me was that this is a magic potion that has never appeared before. Without knowing the formula, they are powerless to create a relevant antidote."

"So you want me to investigate?"

The scene shifts to the capital of the Southern Kingdom.

Himmel spoke the same words as Nanoda; he had also heard about this matter from Heiter.

"That's right. And after the Church researched it, they suspect that this so-called magic potion might be related to the Demon Race."

"Is that so? Then we certainly can't ignore it. Leave it to me."

Himmel revealed a confident smile.

"Recently, because of a new chapter title that appeared in a Scripture, the entire Church has been struggling to interpret it. I haven't slept for two days."

Heiter, who had some dark circles under his eyes, laughed.

"Is it a new revelation from the Goddess?"

"No, I don't know either. It is a chapter with no content. At least until now, I haven't been able to figure out the content."

Heiter was a bit embarrassed. As someone naturally most compatible with the Goddess's mana, even he couldn't make sense of it.

"You've really been working hard. Ah, right..."

Before Himmel finished speaking, Heiter had already continued.

"You want me to look after that Dark Dragon's horn for you, right?"

"Yes, that's the one."

"I will send someone to handle it."

"So, do you have any other clues regarding this matter?"

The scene shifts again.

"This kind of magic potion appeared even earlier in the Central Lands nations. I suspect the source is there, though I'm not very clear on the specific situation."

Aaron finished speaking and fished out a token from his pocket, throwing it to Nanoda.

"What is this?"

"This is a pass for the Northern border fortress. With it, your passage will be convenient in the future."

"Well, not bad."

Nanoda weighed the token in her hand.

"By the way, just giving the token might not work. It's best if you also give a little... cough cough, you know."

Hearing this sentence from Aaron, a big "?" popped up over Nanoda's head.

Seeing Nanoda looking confused, Aaron had to whisper the secret.

"The gatekeepers are very poor."

"..."

Early the next morning, Nanoda arrived at Qual's research institute.

"Qual, I have something here I want you to look at."

Just as she opened the door, she was greeted by a human anatomical model, which gave Nanoda a jump.

Inside the room, Qual was sitting cross-legged on the ground, conducting research on a hand-drawn human anatomical chart in front of him.

"What are you researching?"

Hearing Nanoda's voice, Qual snapped out of it and pointed to the anatomical chart in front of him.

"It is My King. This old one is researching a type of Killing Magic that can aim automatically. For example, after the Killing Magic this old one releases is dodged, it can still turn and hit back, or perhaps a method to automatically adjust the trajectory to hit human vital points."

"Smart tracking missile?"

Nanoda froze for a moment. Qual was truly worthy of being a magic genius. In one year, not only had he researched Killing Magic used for long-distance sniping, but now he also had ideas for developing new things.

"A term I have never heard before."

"Ah, don't mind it. I want to show you something."

Realizing she had let something slip, Nanoda hurriedly changed the topic, handing the magic potion she got from Aaron to Qual while telling him the effects.

Qual picked up the small bottle with his fingernails, examined it carefully, and stroked his white beard with his other hand, lost in thought. After a short while, he asked,

"May this old one open it to take a look?"

Nanoda nodded.

Qual carefully opened the bottle cap and sniffed the potion with his nose.

"Are you sure what you gave me is a magic potion?"

Qual narrowed his eyes and handed the magic potion back to Nanoda.

"That's what Aaron told me."

"Try smelling it. Do you smell... the scent of blood and flesh?"

Being told this by Qual, Nanoda also leaned in to smell it. Sure enough, through the Demon Race's super-strong senses, hidden faintly within the light fragrance was a smell of blood.

"As expected, there is a problem. I still have to go investigate."

Seeing that Nanoda was about to leave, Qual put forward his suggestion.

"This old one suggests you take Aura along as well. Her magic should come in handy."

Nanoda nodded. With Aura by her side, the journey should be quite interesting.
