The hallway outside the study was blessedly empty.
I stood in it for exactly four seconds, long enough to confirm that nobody was watching, that the party noise was still coming from the direction of the courtyard and not from any of the corridors around me, and then I put one foot in front of the other and started moving.
My heels were quiet on the carpet runner. My hands were not entirely steady.
