AMIRA BREAKS SILENCE: "I'M NOT HAPPY"
In rare interview, Khalid's wife admits the marriage is "complicated" and she's "not satisfied with the arrangement." Is she about to demand a divorce?
Lainey Gossip
It's been nine months since the wedding. The arrangement is disintegrating. Roman is miserable. Amira is angry. Khalid thinks he can hold it together through sheer force of will. He can't. Something's about to break.
NARRATIVE
Month 33.
Three months since the lunch. Three months of the arrangement in practice.
And it's killing all of them.
Khalid is on a plane to Dubai when Roman texts.
We need to talk
He knows what that means. Knows the tone. Knows that "we need to talk" means she's breaking.
I land in six hours. Can it wait?
No
He calls from the plane. International call. Expensive. He doesn't care.
"What's wrong?"
"Everything. This. Us. The fact that you're on a plane to your wife right now while I'm sitting alone in my apartment."
"You knew I had to go back."
"I know. I always know. That's the problem." Her voice is tight. "How long this time?"
"Two weeks."
"Two weeks."
"Family obligations. My father wants—"
"I don't care what your father wants. I care that you're leaving me for two weeks to go play husband."
"That's not fair."
"None of this is fair." She's crying now. He can hear it. "None of this has ever been fair."
"Roman—"
"I can't do this anymore."
His entire body goes cold. "Can't do what?"
"This. The waiting. The being second. The—" She stops. "I'm tired, Khalid. I'm so fucking tired."
"Don't. Don't say you're leaving."
"I'm not leaving. That's the problem. I should leave. Any sane person would leave. But I'm not leaving."
"Then what are you saying?"
"I'm saying I can't keep doing this the way we've been doing it. I need—" She stops. "I don't even know what I need. I just know this isn't working."
He's quiet for a long moment. "I'll come back early."
"Don't. Go be with your wife. Fulfill your obligations. I'll still be here when you get back."
"Roman—"
"I have to go."
She hangs up.
He sits on the plane staring at his phone and tries to remember how to breathe.
Dubai. Two weeks. Feels like two years.
Amira is different now. Colder. More distant.
"How was Los Angeles?" she asks over dinner.
"Fine."
"Is she okay? Roman?"
The fact that she says the name. That she knows. That everyone knows.
"No. She's not okay."
"Neither am I."
"I know."
"Do you?" Amira sets down her fork. "Because I'm your wife and you treat me like I'm an inconvenience. Like the two weeks you spend here every few months is charity."
"That's not—"
"It is. You know it is." She's not angry. Just—tired. "I agreed to this arrangement. I agreed to let you love someone else. But I thought at least you'd pretend to be my husband when you were here."
"What do you want me to do?"
"I don't know. Be present. Talk to me. Stop checking your phone every five minutes to see if she's texted."
He looks at his phone. Three unread messages from Roman.
"I'm sorry."
"Are you?"
"I'm trying to be a good husband."
"No you're not. You're trying to maintain both relationships without actually committing to either. And it's not working."
She's right. He knows she's right.
But he doesn't know how to fix it.
Week two in Dubai, Roman calls at 3 AM his time.
Which means it's 6 PM in LA. She's been thinking about this all day.
"I looked at apartments today."
"What?"
"Apartments. In London. Near the film project."
His stomach drops. "You're taking the job."
"I don't know. Maybe. I'm thinking about it."
"Don't."
"Why not?"
"Because that's six months. Six months where I can't see you."
"You're married, Khalid. You're supposed to be okay not seeing me."
"I'm not okay with it."
"That's not my problem." Her voice is hard. "I can't keep sitting in LA waiting for you to have time for me between being a husband."
"So you're leaving."
"I'm considering it."
"To punish me."
"To survive this." She's quiet for a moment. "I'm drowning, Khalid. I'm actually drowning. And you're in Dubai with your wife and I'm alone and I need to do something before I break completely."
"Then I'll come back early."
"No. Stay. Be with Amira. Figure out how to be a husband. And I'll figure out if I can survive being your—whatever I am."
"My everything. You're my everything."
"Then why does it feel like I'm nothing?"
She hangs up.
He doesn't sleep for the rest of the trip.
He comes back to LA after twelve days instead of fourteen.
Can't stand it anymore. Amira doesn't argue. Just watches him pack.
"You're going back to her."
"Yes."
"You lasted twelve days."
"I know."
"This isn't sustainable, Khalid."
"I know that too."
"Then what are you going to do?"
"I don't know."
She doesn't say anything else. Just watches him leave.
Roman's apartment. 2 AM. He has a key now. Uses it.
She's awake. Sitting on the couch in the dark.
"You came back early."
"I couldn't stay away."
"You should have."
"I know." He sits next to her. "Are you really taking the London job?"
"I don't know. Maybe. Probably."
"Don't."
"Give me one good reason."
"Because I love you. Because I can't survive six months without you. Because—"
"Those aren't good reasons. Those are selfish reasons."
"I know."
She's quiet for a long time. "I'm not doing well, Khalid."
"I know."
"No, I mean—I'm really not doing well. I'm not eating. I'm not sleeping. I'm just—existing in this space between your visits. Waiting. Always waiting."
"Then come to Dubai."
"As what? Your mistress? The woman you sneak off to see while your wife is at home?"
"As you. As Roman. As the woman I love."
"That's not an option and you know it."
He does know it. His family would never allow it. The scandal would be—
"Then what do we do?" he asks.
"I don't know." She looks at him finally. "I don't know how to do this anymore. I don't know how to be the obsession. I don't know how to be second. I don't know how to survive waiting for you."
"So you're leaving."
"I didn't say that."
"You're thinking it."
"I'm always thinking it." She touches his face. "But I never do it. Because I'm an idiot who loves you."
He kisses her. Desperate. Like he can make her stay through sheer force of wanting.
Maybe he can. Maybe that's all they have.
The tabloids notice everything.

AMIRA SPOTTED ALONE — WHERE IS HER HUSBAND?
ROMAN LOOKING THIN AND EXHAUSTED — SOURCES SAY SHE'S "NOT COPING"
Everyone's watching. Everyone has opinions.
And none of it matters because they're all trapped in this.
Month 35, Amira calls Khalid.
"I want to make a proposal."
"What kind of proposal?"
"Divorce."
His entire world stops. "What?"
"Divorce. Quietly. Amicably. I keep the title. You keep your position. But we end the marriage."
"Why?"
"Because this isn't working. Because you're miserable pretending to be my husband. Because I'm miserable being ignored." She pauses. "Because we both deserve better than this."
"The family—"
"The family will survive. We'll make it work. Cite incompatibility. Cultural differences. Whatever."
"And if I refuse?"
"Then we keep doing this. But Khalid—I don't know how much longer I can watch you pine for someone else while pretending to be married to me."
He's quiet for a long moment. "Can I think about it?"
"You have one month. Then I'm making the decision myself."
She hangs up.
He sits in his car outside Roman's building and tries to process what just happened.
His wife just offered him a divorce.
A way out. A way to actually be with Roman properly.
And he doesn't know if he should take it.
Because if he divorces Amira, he loses the family position. Loses the resources. Loses everything he married her to maintain.
Everything he needs to protect Roman.
He doesn't tell Roman about the call.
Not yet.
Because he doesn't know what to say.
"Do you want to marry me?" feels too simple.
"Do you want me to give up everything for you?" feels too honest.
So he just—holds her. And tries to figure out what the right choice is.
If there is a right choice.
