Chapter 40 - The Boss's Wife?

"Hahaha."

Michael Harper smiled, looking at his outstanding daughter with a face full of satisfaction.

"Jessica, you were raised by your father—how could I not know your good qualities?"

Jessica said, "Then why won't you let me wear... um... less?"

Michael shook his head. "Girl, you don't understand. If you dress too revealingly on your first meeting, it will only make Chairman Sterling look down on you and think you're frivolous and disrespectful."

"Your goal is to marry into the Sterling family, not to become Chairman Sterling's mistress or side piece, so your attire must not appear vulgar."

"We just met Ms. Lang and her secretary Rachel Brooks. Do you remember what they were wearing?"

A girl like Jessica who loved beauty must have a deeper memory of clothes.

Jessica nodded. "They're dressed similarly, both wearing white shirts and black skirts. However, the secretary's skirt is shorter, while Ms. Lang's skirt is longer, almost to her knees."

Michael nodded. "It's the height of the skirt that differentiates Ms. Lang and Rachel Brooks. Is Ms. Lang's figure worse than Rachel Brooks's? Obviously better! But as the boss, she can't dress too provocatively."

"You should also make yourself look high-class, so that Chairman Sterling will cherish you."

Jessica thought Michael's words made a lot of sense. "Thank you, Dad. I will definitely snatch Chairman Sterling back from Ms. Lang!"

Michael nodded with satisfaction. Once his daughter married the chairman of Horizon Group, Old Madam Harper would value Michael's family even more.

At that time, the Harper family's assets of over a billion dollars, as well as the company's heir, would undoubtedly belong to Michael!

The two sat there for about ten minutes.

"Why can't they even serve a cup of tea? Is Horizon Group's hospitality this bad?"

Jessica's throat was getting dry from talking, and she then realized that the secretary hadn't served them tea.

Jessica couldn't resist opening the door and calling out to Rachel Brooks. "Secretary Brooks, bring us two cups of tea. I'd like black tea."

"Okay, please wait a moment."

Rachel Brooks agreed, but more than ten minutes passed and she still hadn't served the tea.

"I'm so angry! This Secretary Brooks is just giving me the runaround!" Jessica stomped her feet in anger.

Michael didn't want Jessica's mood to be affected, so he comforted her. "Once you become the chairman's wife, you can fire her. Don't be angry—Chairman Sterling could come in at any time."

"Oh."

Jessica immediately resumed her dignified sitting posture, with a smile on her face, like a lady from a well-to-do family.

And just like that, half an hour passed.

"Dad, I can't take it anymore. This proper sitting posture is just too tiring. Why isn't Chairman Sterling here yet?"

Jessica lay down on the sofa and put her legs up on it as well.

Michael glanced at Jessica's unbecoming posture and shook his head. "It seems Chairman Sterling doesn't value us. He actually made us wait for an hour."

Just then, Jeff pushed the door open and entered.

Seeing Jessica wearing high heels and putting her feet on the sofa, Jeff couldn't help but say:

"Jessica, I know you're very casual at home, but are you still this casual outside? Didn't your dad tell you that this is impolite?"

Upon hearing the door open, Jessica was so startled that she pulled her legs back down and resumed her previous ladylike sitting posture.

Upon seeing this, Jeff said, "Hmm, you're wearing a form-fitting red pencil dress with a high thigh slit. This is the first time I've seen you dress like this in the past three years. I didn't expect you to have such a delicate and refined air about you—like a woman from the South."

It must be said that Michael's choice of outfit for his daughter was very successful.

If Jeff hadn't known Jessica before, their first meeting would indeed have left a good impression, and he would have wanted to get to know her better.

Hearing Jeff's praise, Jessica looked disgusted. "Go away, don't stare at me. I'm not wearing this dress for you. I know Dad said today that Grandpa originally wanted to arrange for us to get married, which made you have illusions about me."

"But how can a pheasant be worthy of a phoenix? You're not even good enough for Emily, how could you possibly be worthy of me?"

Although Jessica was very feminine, Jeff had never had any improper thoughts about her in the past three years.

"Jessica, you've misunderstood. I just wanted to..."

Jessica, never one to mince words, quickly retorted, "Even thinking about it is a sin!"

Jeff shook his head helplessly, ignored her, sat down, and looked at Michael.

However, before he could speak, Michael said to Jeff, "Jeff, what are you doing here, a bodyguard? Where is Chairman Sterling?"

Jeff had already told them he was the chairman of Horizon Group, but they didn't believe him, so he didn't bother to say it again.

Jeff said, "You're here to discuss the 'First-Class Private Residence' project, right? Just tell me."

Michael scoffed. "Tell you? What's the point of telling you? You're just a lousy bodyguard, a useless piece of trash who only knows how to fight. Do you understand projects? Do you understand business?"

Jeff got angry too. "So, you don't want to talk? Fine, I'm leaving."

"Wait a minute." Jessica suddenly grabbed Jeff, catching him off guard.

Jessica smiled kindly. "Jeff, don't leave yet. I have a question for you. You've been Victoria Lang's bodyguard for the past two days, so you should be quite familiar with Victoria Lang and Chairman Sterling's affairs, right?"

Jeff nodded. "It's alright. I understand some of it."

Jessica asked with a smile, "Then can you tell me how close Victoria Lang and Chairman Sterling are? Do they stay together at night? Do they sleep at Chairman Sterling's house or Victoria Lang's house?"

Jeff knew that Jessica was a big mouth and would spread everything.

Previously, Victoria Lang had claimed that she and he were lovers, which had already damaged his reputation. He wanted to take this opportunity, through Jessica, to let more people know that he had no relationship with Victoria Lang.

Jeff said, "They broke up."

This answer both saved face for Victoria Lang—without denying that the two were lovers—and restored his own status as a single person.

Upon hearing this, Jessica and Michael were so moved that tears welled up in their eyes.

"Broken up? Broke up? Hahahaha..." Jessica burst into laughter.

Michael slapped his thigh excitedly. "This is truly heaven's help! Heaven is helping the Harper family!"

Jeff was a little confused and asked, "Why are you so happy that they broke up?"

Jessica smiled, resumed her dignified sitting posture, crossed one leg over the other, giving off a superior air.

"Jeff, oh, no, Little Jeff, no—Chairman Sterling also has the surname Sterling, so... Little Sterling."

Jeff looked completely bewildered. In such a short time, Jessica had changed her way of addressing him three times. What was she trying to do?

Jessica continued: "Little Sterling, out of consideration for the fact that you were once my brother-in-law, I'll give you a chance. Go outside and bring a cup of black tea to your future boss's wife!"

The boss's wife?
