Chapter 2 - It might not be that bad after all

[Your interpretation is partially correct]

Chase closed his eyes.

He inhaled deeply through his nose.

Then he exhaled.

"System, let me get this straight. I transmigrated into a world where people can devour monsters, manipulate space, control time, and eventually become gods. And after all that, you give me a library?"

[The Akashic Archive is not a conventional library]

"Oh, really? Does it have a cool name when I use it to beat someone to death with a book?"

[The Akashic Archive does not require physical books to function]

"That wasn't my question!"

Chase grabbed his head.

He had imagined receiving a powerful cheat skill. Something like an all-consuming predator, an infinitely calculating intelligence, or an ability that allowed him to copy the powers of anyone he defeated.

Instead, he had received a glorified information management system.

Sure, the description sounded impressive, but it was still a library.

He could already imagine the reactions if he ever met other reincarnators.

What's your special ability?

Mine allows me to devour anything and evolve infinitely.

Mine grants me perfect analytical abilities.

Mine lets me travel across the multiverse.

And yours?

I can organize books.

He wanted to cry.

"Couldn't you have called it something cooler? Supreme Codex? Infinite Grimoire? Heavenly Archive of Eternal Wisdom?"

[The name of a Unique Skill cannot be changed through conventional means]

"Of course it can't."

Chase looked up at the sky.

"Of course the universe would give me an overpowered ability with the most embarrassing name possible."

He spent another minute complaining before finally remembering something important.

The system had described the Akashic Archive as exceptionally powerful.

That wording couldn't be meaningless.

Even if he disliked the name, he needed to understand what his new ability could actually do.

"Fine. Whatever. Show me the complete skill description."

The screen changed.

[Unique Skill: Akashic Archive]

[Authority: Absolute Recording, Comprehensive Analysis, Skill Reconstruction, Evolutionary Compilation, Infinite Storage]

[Absolute Recording:The user can record compatible supernatural abilities, techniques, knowledge, and phenomena encountered through observation or direct interaction]

[Comprehensive Analysis:Theusercananalyzerecordedinformationdowntoitsfundamentalprinciples,identifyingitsstructure,functions,limitations,andpotentialapplications]

[SkillReconstruction:TheusercanreproducerecordedabilitiesthroughtheArchive,providedthenecessaryrequirementsforactivationaresatisfied]

[EvolutionaryCompilation:The user can optimize , evolve, and reconstruct recorded abilities into superior forms.Multiple compatible abilities may be combined to create entirely new techniques.]

[Infinite Storage:The Archive possesses an effectively limitless internal repository capable ofpreserving recorded information without degradation.]

Chase's expression gradually changed.

He read the description again.

Then he read it a third time, much more slowly.

"...Hold on."

His eyes narrowed.

"Reproduce recorded abilities?"

Affirmative.

"Even if I don't originally possess them?"

[Affirmative, provided the ability is compatible with the user′s current state and its activation requirements can besatisfied]

"And evolve them?"

[Affirmative]

"Combine different abilities?"

[Affirmative]

Chase fell silent.

He suddenly felt rather foolish for complaining.

If the description was accurate, the Akashic Archive wasn't merely a library. It was an ability that could collect supernatural powers and turn them into something better.

A library that could rewrite its own contents.

A collection of techniques that could continuously improve itself.

A cheat skill that became more dangerous with every new ability it acquired.

His lips slowly curled upward.

"...Okay. That's actually pretty good."

He coughed into his fist.

"Of course, I knew that from the beginning. I was merely testing whether the system possessed a sense of humor."

[The system does not possess a dedicated humor module]

"Nobody asked you."

Chase rubbed his hands together.

"Now, let's see what this thing can really do."

He glanced around the forest.

His gaze landed on a small patch of dry leaves.

He remembered a certain detail about Tensura.

Magic existed in this world, and even relatively ordinary creatures could possess supernatural abilities. If he wanted to test the Archive, he needed to find something simple.

Something he could understand.

Something that wouldn't immediately kill him.

"System, do I possess any abilities besides the Archive?"

[Host possesses the physical capabilities of an ordinary human. The Akashic Archive is currently the host′s only Unique Skill.]

"Wonderful. So I'm a normal human in a forest full of monsters."

He sighed.

"At least I'm consistent."

He looked toward the clearing again.

"Let's start with magic. Can I learn it?"

Affirmative.Thehostcanacquireanddevelopcompatibleformsofmagicthroughstudy,observation,andpractice.

"Then show me how to use a basic fire spell."

Nosuitablespellhasbeenrecorded.

Chase stared at the notification.

"You're telling me you can record and evolve abilities, but you don't come with a single basic spell?"

[The Archive does not automaticallyp ossess every ability in existence.New information must be acquired before it can be recorded and developed]

He considered this for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"Fair enough. Can't expect a library to contain every book ever written before anyone puts the books inside."

He paused.

"...I can't believe I just defended my own golden finger."

Still, he wasn't particularly worried.

He had an entire multiverse to explore, and the system had already confirmed that he could travel between worlds.

There were countless supernatural abilities waiting to be discovered.

He simply needed to find the right starting point.

For now, however, there was a much more immediate concern.

Food.

Water.

Shelter.

And the small matter of not getting eaten alive.

Chase looked toward the deeper parts of the forest.

Somewhere among those trees, monsters were wandering around, completely unaware that a new arrival had just appeared in their territory.

He swallowed.

"On second thought, let's not do anything reckless until I know where I am."

He took a cautious step forward.

Then another.

A few minutes later, he stumbled into a small clearing.

At first, he thought he had found an abandoned campsite. There were several broken branches on the ground, a patch of flattened grass, and what looked like the remains of a small fire.

Then he noticed the footprints.

They were enormous.

Each print was almost as large as his torso, and the surrounding earth had been crushed beneath an immense weight.

Chase stared at them.

"...Those aren't human footprints."

A low growl came from behind him.

His entire body went rigid.

Slowly, very slowly, he turned around.

A massive wolf-like creature stood at the edge of the clearing.

Its fur was dark gray, its claws were long enough to tear through flesh, and its yellow eyes were fixed directly on him.

Saliva dripped from its open jaws.

Chase's mind went blank.

The creature lowered its head.

He took a step backward.

It took a step forward.

"Okay."

His voice came out much quieter than he intended.

"Let's not do anything hasty."

The monster growled.

Chase raised both hands.

"I don't know what you are, and you don't know what I am. We're practically strangers. There's no reason we can't settle this peacefully."

The creature lunged.

"WHY DOES NOBODY IN THESE WORLDS WANT TO TALK?!"

Chase threw himself sideways.

The monster's claws tore through the ground where he had been standing a moment earlier. Dirt and grass flew into the air as the beast turned toward him.

He scrambled to his feet and ran.

He had never been particularly athletic, and his new body didn't seem inclined to compensate for that unfortunate fact.

Within seconds, he was breathing heavily.

Behind him, the monster was gaining ground.

"System! Help!"

[Please specify the requested assistance]

"ANYTHING! GIVE ME SOMETHING I CAN USE TO SURVIVE!"

[The Akashic Archive can record and evolve compatible abilities. No suitable combat ability has currently been recorded]

"THEN RECORD SOMETHING!"

[No suitable ability detected within the immediate vicinity]

Chase nearly stumbled.

"YOU'RE USELESS!"

[The Akashic Archive is functioning normally]

"I'M GOING TO HAVE A VERY LONG CONVERSATION WITH YOU IF I SURVIVE THIS!"

The monster leaped.

Chase threw himself forward, rolling across the ground as the creature crashed into a tree.

A sharp pain shot through his shoulder.

He barely noticed.

His attention had shifted to the enormous wolf, which was already pulling itself free of the broken branches.

Then something unexpected happened.

A translucent notification appeared in the corner of his vision.

[New phenomenon detected]

[Analyzing target...]

[Analysis complete]

[Target identified: Direwolf]

[Compatible biological characteristics recorded] Chase blinked.

The wolf shook the broken branches from its fur.

Another notification appeared.

[New ability recorded: Enhanced Olfactory Perception]

[New ability recorded: Predatory Instinct]

[New ability recorded: Reinforced Musculature]

Chase stared at the messages.

Then he looked at the wolf.

Then he looked back at the messages.

A smile slowly spread across his face.

"...Oh."

The Direwolf charged again.

Chase raised one hand.

"Wait a second, you oversized dog."

The Archive responded to his thoughts.

He could feel the newly recorded abilities within his consciousness, their structures laid bare for him to examine. He understood how they functioned, how their components interacted, and how their underlying principles could be improved.

It was an extraordinary sensation.

Like opening a book and immediately understanding every word, every hidden meaning, and every possibility contained within its pages.

Then the Archive displayed another notification.

[Evolutionary Compilation available]

[Compatible abilities detected]

[Suggested compilation: Reinforce d Musculature + Predatory Instinct]

[Potential result:Predator′s Body]

Chase's smile widened.

"Now we're talking."

The Direwolf lunged.

Chase focused on the notification.

[Compile abilities?]

"Yes!"

[Compilation initiated]

A strange warmth spread throughout his body.

His muscles tightened, his senses sharpened, and the world seemed to slow for a fraction of a second as an enormous amount of new information settled into his mind.

He could hear the Direwolf's claws scraping against the earth.

He could smell the damp soil beneath its paws.

He could even perceive the subtle shift in its weight as it prepared to change direction.

The creature's movements were suddenly much easier to follow.

Chase twisted sideways.

The Direwolf passed within inches of his body.

For the first time, he dodged the attack without throwing himself blindly onto the ground.

He stumbled backward, staring at his hands.

"...Holy shit."

The system chimed.

[Compilation successful]

[New ability acquired:Predator′s Body]

Chase flexed his fingers.

His heart was pounding, but the fear that had consumed him moments earlier was slowly being replaced by something else.

Excitement.

Pure, unrestrained excitement.

He had just acquired a new ability by combining two things the Archive had recorded automatically.

And if he could do that with a few simple biological traits, what would happen when he acquired genuine magic?

What would happen when he encountered powerful monsters, legendary warriors, or beings whose abilities could reshape the world?

What would happen when he started collecting skills from entirely different universes?

His imagination began running wild.

The Direwolf growled and Chase turned toward it.

For several seconds, the two stared at each other.

Then Chase smiled.

"All right, you mangy mutt. I was having a terrible day, and you haven't exactly improved it."

He raised his fists.

"But you've helped me discover something very important."

The wolf snarled.

Chase's grin became positively shameless.

"My library is fucking amazing."

The Direwolf charged.

And for the first time since waking up in this strange world, Chase didn't immediately run away.

He had a new ability to test.

A ridiculous golden finger to explore.

And an entire multiverse waiting beyond the horizon.

He was going to need a bigger library.
