Faye had been impatiently waiting for Princess since she left. It had been less than 30 minutes, but it felt like forever. She kept shifting her weight on the stiff hospital mattress, the sheets rustling loudly with every restless movement she made. Her eyes darted around the quiet space, unable to settle on anything for more than a few seconds.
She looked at the clock, then back at the time again, waiting. The hands on the wall seemed to be moving in slow motion, ticking with a dull, heavy thud that only made her irritation grow. One of the pups' cries brought her back to reality, and she quickly attended to the baby, still having Adam Kings on her mind. She reached down into the clear bassinet, gently patting the tiny swaddled bundle until the soft whimpering faded out. Even as she focused on her newborns, her chest felt tight with a familiar, burning anxiety. Wondering what was happening and hoping he wasn't laying his hands on her girlfriend.
