The birds in the abandoned district scattered unevenly when the scream came, only some of them lifting off. The rest stayed on their ledges.

Without the dense movement of the working districts, the spatial field settled into something readable. Two figures standing upright, a third on the ground. The third screamed again, sharper this time.
I set Wip down on the pavement beside me.
"Stay." I said.
She looked at me with the expression she used when she disagreed with an instruction but was willing to temporarily accept it. I didn't want her to drop and get hurt as I ran again.
