Lina feigned confusion. "Why would you say that?"
The Duke of Anjou let out a low laugh, though there was nothing particularly amused about his expression. "Tell me, Your Highness. Are you genuinely a foolish, greedy woman with an insatiable ambition, or are you simply a remarkably skilled liar?"
Lina smiled as she lifted her glass and took a sip of water, using the brief pause to consider what he was really trying to say. His words sounded like an accusation, but she still had no idea what he believed she had done. Since she couldn't afford to reveal her ignorance, she decided to play along and see what she could learn from his reaction.
"So that's how you see me? I must admit, Your Grace, you've deeply wounded my feelings."
She delivered the words with just enough wounded dignity to make them sound convincing, although she didn't particularly care what he thought of her.
