Chapter 44 - The Ghost of the Deep

A mountain of steel in the cold, starlit night,

With a thousand small windows of warm, golden light.

The "Queen of the Ocean," so grand and so vast,

With a future so bright and a glorious past.

The band played a waltz as the champagne was poured,

While the dreamers and princes all crowded aboard.

No fear in their hearts of the dark, rolling tide,

For the gods of the metal were standing with pride.

But silence was waiting in mirrors of glass,

Where the white, jagged mountains of ice slowly pass.

A shudder, a scrape, and a whisper of fate,

As the freezing Atlantic rushed in through the gate.

The lights flickered low as the bow slipped away,

In a world of deep shadows, far out from the day.

The cries of the lost in the mist and the spray,

As the unsinkable giant was taken away.

Now she rests in the dark, where the currents are still,

A victim of pride and of nature's own will.

A monument rusted in the gardens of sand,

Far away from the touch of a warm, human hand.
