Chapter 8 - Part 8 – Between Duty and Desire

Rain had stopped.

But the storm inside Preyajeet had just begun.

Military sirens surrounded the warehouse. Soldiers rushed toward him.

"Major! Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," he replied coldly, hiding the pain in his shoulder.

But his mind wasn't on the injury.

It was on her.

Akanksha.

Inside a secret intelligence office, officers projected hacked data on a large screen.

"This attack was not random," one senior officer said.

"It was a third-party strike. Someone wanted both sides to clash."

Preyajeet's jaw tightened.

He remembered her words.

We've both been used.

Was she telling the truth?

Or was that another layer of deception?

"Major," the officer continued, "we've tracked the female suspect. She is linked to multiple international intelligence networks."

Preyajeet stayed silent.

He didn't reveal that she had saved his life.

He didn't reveal the hesitation in her eyes.

Because if he did—

She would be declared an enemy permanently.

And maybe worse.

Meanwhile…

In a hidden safe house across the city, Akanksha pressed ice against her bruised arm.

Her communicator buzzed.

"You failed to secure full data," the distorted voice said.

"There was interference," she answered calmly.

"We warned you. No emotional distractions."

Her eyes flashed with anger.

"I am not distracted."

There was a pause.

"Then eliminate the Indian officer."

Silence filled the room.

Her fingers tightened around the device.

"Eliminate Major Preyajeet Rathore."

Her breathing slowed.

Cold.

Controlled.

But her heart felt heavy.

"That will not be necessary," she replied firmly. "He is not the primary threat."

"You are not in a position to decide."

The line disconnected.

She stared at the dark screen.

For the first time in years—

Her mission felt unclear.

Next Evening.

Delhi Metro Station.

Crowded.

Loud.

Chaotic.

Preyajeet stood among civilians in plain clothes.

He knew she would come.

Spies always return to unfinished missions.

And he was right.

Across the platform—

She stood quietly.

Simple kurti.

Hair open.

Looking like any ordinary girl.

Their eyes met.

No guns.

No backup.

Just two hearts carrying secrets.

He walked toward her slowly.

"So… this is where enemies meet?" he said softly.

She gave a faint smile. "Public places are safer."

"For who?"

"For feelings," she replied.

He stopped in front of her.

"You were ordered to kill me, weren't you?"

Her silence was answer enough.

"But you won't," he said.

She looked directly into his eyes.

"I don't know anymore."

Train sounds echoed.

People moved around them.

But time slowed between them.

"You said someone bigger is behind this," he continued. "Tell me."

"If I do," she whispered, "there's no going back."

"I've already crossed that line."

Emotion filled her eyes.

"You trust me that much?"

He didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

That single word shook her.

For someone raised on lies and missions—

Trust was dangerous.

And precious.

Suddenly—

A sniper laser dot appeared on Preyajeet's chest.

Her eyes widened.

Without thinking—

She pushed him aside.

Gunshot.

The bullet grazed her arm.

Chaos erupted.

People screamed.

Preyajeet instantly drew his hidden weapon.

"Stay down!" he shouted.

He spotted the sniper on a distant building.

But before he could shoot—

The attacker vanished.

He turned back.

Akanksha was bleeding.

"You're hurt," he said urgently.

"It's nothing," she insisted.

He held her firmly.

"This ends now. Whoever is playing us… we expose them together."

Together.

The word felt forbidden.

But right.

She nodded slowly.

"If we do this… we betray our sides."

"Then we betray the lies," he said.

Sirens approached again.

She looked at him.

"This path won't be easy."

He stepped closer.

"I'm not afraid of war."

His voice softened.

"I'm afraid of losing you."

Her breath caught.

For a second—

The spy disappeared.

The soldier disappeared.

Only a man and a woman remained.

And in the middle of a battlefield—

Love quietly chose its side.
