Chapter 21 - chapter 21: cracks beneath the truth

Dani tried calling Abi .

The call failed instantly.

He tried more 2 times , it all failed

He stared at the dark phone screen for a long time before lowering it slowly. He already knew she had turned off her phone on purpose. Abi was not someone who avoided problems unless she had truly reached her limit.

And for the first time in years, Dani realized he no longer knew how to reach her. Definitely she won't be in their home after the day's event .

He tightened his grip around the phone before shoving it into his pocket.

No.

There had to be a mistake somewhere.

Abi was angry. Hurt. Maybe this was her way of getting back at him.

That had to be it.

Without wasting another second, he returned to the doctor's office and demanded another test.

Another blood sample.

Another DNA confirmation.

Another explanation.

But two hours later, every result still pointed to the same truth.

Complete infertility.

The twins were not biologically his.

The doctor had spoken carefully, professionally, almost sympathetically, but Dani barely heard anything after that.

His world had already begun collapsing.

Meanwhile, across another wing of the hospital, Chelsea slowly opened her eyes.

The dull white ceiling came into focus first.

Then the scent of antiseptic.

Then the sound of children giggling softly nearby.

Her eyes widened immediately.

The caregiver was sitting quietly beside the twins.

Chelsea's expression tightened at once.

"What are you doing here with my kids?" she snapped.

The caregiver jumped slightly at her harsh tone.

She had always been afraid of Chelsea.

"M-Mr. Dani asked me to bring them here," she replied nervously. "He said they should come see you."

Chelsea relaxed slightly.

At least Dani still cared enough to think about her.

She was just about to tell the caregiver to take the children home when the door suddenly opened.

Dani walked in.

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

Chelsea's smile appeared immediately.

"Dani, you're here," she said softly. "Come check on the baby. What did the doctor say? Everything is okay, right?"

Normally, Dani would have rushed to her side.

He would have touched her forehead, asked if she was feeling better, maybe even placed his hand gently on her stomach the way he always did.

But today…

He simply stood there.

Both hands buried inside his trouser pockets.

Watching her.

Coldly.

Chelsea's heartbeat skipped.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

"Dani…" she called carefully. "Is everything okay?"

He stared at her for a few seconds before sighing quietly.

Then, unexpectedly, he smiled.

But the smile didn't reach his eyes.

"How are you feeling?" he asked calmly.

Chelsea frowned slightly.

"I'm fine," she answered slowly. "But what did the doctor say?"

"Good," Dani replied.

That was all.

No concern.

No warmth.

No affection.

Chelsea suddenly felt uncomfortable under his gaze.

Even the twins seemed quieter than usual.

After a long silence, Dani finally spoke again.

"It's getting late. I'll head home and get some rest."

Chelsea wanted to stop him.

Wanted to ask what had happened.

But something in his expression made her hesitate.

So instead, she forced a smile.

"Okay… drive safely."

Dani nodded once and walked out.

Chelsea stared at the door long after he disappeared.

Her chest tightened with unease.

Something had changed.

And she could feel it.

The drive home was painfully silent.

Dani's hands rested heavily on the steering wheel as his thoughts spiraled uncontrollably.

In the rearview mirror, he could see the twins laughing softly while climbing over the caregiver in the back seat.

Children he had loved wholeheartedly.

Children he had proudly called his.

Children who now suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The hospital lights faded behind him as his mind replayed everything the doctors had said.

Infertile.

Unable to have children naturally.

The words kept echoing inside his skull.

Then another memory surfaced.

The very first night he spent with Chelsea.

At the time, he had been heavily drunk, drowning himself in alcohol after another argument with Abi. But even then, he remembered still being somewhat conscious.

That was because Abi had once insisted he start taking medication that would help him maintain clarity whenever he drank excessively.

She had worried about his safety.

Worried someone might take advantage of him.

Back then, he had laughed at her concerns.

Now the memory made his stomach twist.

He remembered waking up in a hotel room beside Chelsea.

Half-naked.

Bedsheets scattered everywhere.

Lipstick stains across his face.

Blood on the white sheets.

Chelsea crying softly while covering herself with the blanket.

She had looked so innocent.

So fragile.

And when she told him he had been her first man, he believed her instantly.

He had even blamed the alcohol.

Thought maybe he had simply lost control that night.

When she later came back claiming she was pregnant, he never doubted her.

Not once.

Instead, he accepted her completely.

Protected her.

Spoiled her.

Built an entire second life around her.

And now…

Everything felt like a carefully arranged illusion.

His breathing became uneven.

Then suddenly…

SCREECH!

The car tires dragged harshly against the road as Dani slammed on the brakes.

A realization had just hit him.

Josh.

His personal assistant.

Dani's eyes widened slowly.

There had been countless moments over the years where he walked in on Josh and Chelsea together.

Always laughing.

Always strangely comfortable around each other.

And every single time, they had an explanation ready.

"I was just helping her carry something."

"She needed assistance."

"We were discussing your surprise."

At the time, Dani never questioned it.

Josh had been with him for years.

Someone he trusted completely.

But now…

As he stared at the twins through the rearview mirror, the resemblance suddenly became impossible to ignore.

The shape of their eyes.

The smile.

Even the way one of them tilted his head while laughing.

His chest tightened violently.

"No…" he whispered.

But deep down, he already knew.

Josh.

His trusted assistant.

The man he treated like family.

Had betrayed him.

Dani let out a hollow laugh.

What a joke he had become.

The powerful Dani Wellfound…

Reduced to a fool everyone played.

Then his thoughts drifted toward Abi.

A different kind of guilt settled inside him.

Abi had loved him genuinely, even gave up other better suitors just for him her best friend

Supported him.

Protected him.

Sacrificed for him.

And what had he done in return?

Ignored her.

Neglected her.

Pushed her away until another man became the one standing beside her.

Michael Osborne

Even now, the image of Abi holding Michael's hand burned painfully in his mind.

He had seen the way she looked at him.

Safe.

Comfortable.

Alive.

Things she no longer felt with him.

Dani closed his eyes briefly.

For the first time in years, regret truly began sinking into his bones.

But regret alone would not fix anything.

Tomorrow…

He would go to work.

And when he saw Josh

There would be consequences.
