Chapter 85: The Slave Uprising in Tyrosh (Part III)

Tyrosh, Dionysus Fountain Square, Armory No. 3

"What are you doing? Entry is forbidden here. Leave immediately!"

Armory No. 3 was a storage facility for heavy weapons such as scorpions and large repeating crossbows. Under normal circumstances, these weapons were only deployed during sieges.

Because of this, even during ordinary times there were always around one hundred soldiers of the Tyroshi City Watch guarding the location.

When the guards saw the large number of approaching men, instinctive fear appeared in their hearts. Although Narsas and his group were wearing City Watch uniforms, most of their faces were unfamiliar.

"Rumble—!"

"Aah—!"

"Ouch!"

With a deafening roar, a bolt of lightning suddenly exploded among the soldiers. The shockwave from the lightning blast instantly knocked more than ten guards to the ground.

"Attack!"

At Narsas's command, several captains immediately led the warriors of the Chainbreakers forward.

They charged straight at the guards who were still stunned with terror.

These soldiers had once served in the former Imperial Spear and Shield Legion. Now that they had obtained proper armor and weapons from the Tyroshi City Watch, their combat effectiveness had finally returned to its previous level.

Because the enemy forces were few, they did not even bother forming a formal phalanx formation and simply rushed forward.

"Al… although I do not know who you are… your plan cannot succeed! Our gates have already been sealed, and they require special keys to open!"

The City Watch captain who had shouted earlier saw his men rapidly falling and hurriedly yelled at Narsas.

He hoped to scare them away with this warning.

After all, the weapons stored inside Armory No. 3 were extremely dangerous.

If they fell into enemy hands, it would be a terrible disaster for all of Tyrosh.

"Kill them!"

Slash!

"Aaaah!"

Narsas completely ignored the threat and coldly ordered the Chainbreakers to eliminate the remaining guards who were resisting desperately.

"Lord Narsas! We found the flaw we prepared earlier. Those fools never inspected it carefully. If we destroy that point, part of the wall will collapse!"

Guided by one of the Chainbreaker soldiers, Narsas arrived at a nearby construction site where the safety scaffolding had not yet been removed.

Several Chainbreaker warriors were already there, carrying a thick log and repeatedly slamming it against a specific section of the wall.

This was a crude but effective battering ram, usually used to break wooden gates or weak defensive structures.

Under normal circumstances, using a log against a stone wall would accomplish very little.

However, the Chainbreakers had already sabotaged the structure earlier. The stones had been deliberately reassembled poorly.

"Boom… crack… rumble!"

After nearly a minute of relentless impact, a hole appeared in the lower corner of the wall.

Once that opening formed, the weakened structure collapsed like a pile of loose bricks.

"Woo—! Hurrah!"

Amid the cheers of the Chainbreakers, a section of the rear wall of Armory No. 3 crumbled to the ground.

More and more soldiers immediately rushed inside.

"Hurry! Move the weapons! Sweetcorn, fire the signal!"

Seeing the hole finally opened, Narsas's excitement was obvious.

He immediately ordered his men to begin transporting the weapons while sending signals to gather the slave forces.

"Whizz—! Whizz—! Whizz—!"

One whistling arrow after another shot into the sky.

The slaves still fighting near the sewer entrances instantly noticed the signal.

"The signal arrows are in the sky! Our hope has arrived! Charge!"

At this moment, the region around Dionysus Fountain Square had become complete chaos.

Slaves wearing red cloth strips tied to their arms were setting fires throughout the district, creating confusion everywhere.

Because most slaves were fighting individually, they were gradually being pushed back by the City Watch soldiers converging from multiple directions.

Fortunately, many Chainbreaker warriors were mixed among them.

Their presence provided the slaves with a sense of leadership and hope.

These particular Chainbreaker soldiers were specially assigned to command the slaves.

Many of them were system soldiers personally selected by Jon Snow. Their personal leadership might not have been exceptional, but as long as they followed Jon's plan precisely, most problems could be solved.

Under their direction, the slaves began exploiting their advantages.

They used the dense urban architecture of Tyrosh to wage a war of harassment against the City Watch.

In open streets, the slaves armed with short swords were no match for disciplined City Watch formations.

The shields and spears of the City Watch created an almost impenetrable wall.

So, under the instructions of the Chainbreaker soldiers, the slaves began drawing their enemies into narrow alleyways.

First they used small groups to lure the soldiers inside.

Then they attacked the formation from multiple directions.

This tactic placed the City Watch soldiers in a difficult situation, preventing them from maintaining proper formation.

At the same time, the slaves exploited the height of nearby buildings, throwing stones and firing arrows downward.

Shields could only protect the front.

When attacks came from above, the soldiers had to divert their attention upward, disrupting their formation.

Meanwhile, the slaves used temples, towers, and multistory houses to conduct guerrilla warfare.

They constantly shifted positions, attacking from one street and disappearing into another.

The City Watch soldiers found it impossible to pursue effectively.

Instead, their stamina was gradually drained by the constant movement.

When the whistling arrows appeared, the Chainbreakers immediately began shouting for the slaves to converge on Dionysus Fountain Square.

They knew that a huge stockpile of weapons was waiting there.

If enough slaves could gather and form a large force, they could lure the barracks troops outside the city into the battle.

If that happened, Narsas's plan would succeed.

"Quickly! Quickly! Our brothers wear red ribbons! Grab weapons and make those cursed Tyroshi pay!"

"Hurrah!"

"Charge! Freedom!"

Amid the shouts of the Chainbreakers, the slave forces soon broke through the defensive line near Dionysus Fountain Square.

Only some chevaux-de-frise barricades and about two hundred City Watch soldiers guarded the area, so the breakthrough was not very difficult.

Soon, the slaves wearing red ribbons reached the square.

There they saw a fully assembled army formation waiting for them.

If those soldiers had not also been wearing red ribbons, the slaves might have thought they had been betrayed.

But they quickly noticed the enormous piles of weapons and armor stacked beside the formation.

"Hurry! Enemy reinforcements are about to enter the city! If we delay, we're finished!"

Under Narsas's urging, the bolder slaves rushed forward.

Many of them had never seen such armor before. Some of the less experienced slaves even began fighting each other over the equipment.

However, the Chainbreaker warriors quickly intervened and suppressed those causing trouble.

After more than half an hour of confusion, the slaves finally formed a rough infantry formation.

Although the armor made them look somewhat organized, they were still little more than a ragged mob.

If they encountered disciplined professional troops in open combat, they would collapse almost instantly.

But Narsas never intended for them to truly fight.

All he needed was chaos and distraction.

"Wooo—! Wooo—!"

Just as the slave formation finished assembling, the long cry of war horns echoed from the eastern side of Dionysus Fountain Square.

"Hoo-ha! Hoo-ha!"

Accompanied by rhythmic battle chants, several disciplined infantry formations appeared in Narsas's field of vision.

The banner carried by the leading unit displayed a silver stag on a purple field.

The soldiers wore helmets adorned with antlers and carried spears and shields.

This was the Silver Stag Legion of Tyrosh.

Long before Aegon I Targaryen's Conquest of Westeros, the last Storm King of House Durrandon had once sent troops to assist Tyrosh against an invasion from Volantis.

To commemorate that assistance, the Tyroshi later established the Silver Stag Legion in honor of House Durrandon.

Originally, they had even considered establishing a Black Dragon Legion to honor the Targaryens.

But after Aegon the Conqueror unified the Seven Kingdoms, no one in Tyrosh dared mention such an idea again.

Magister Saeraes Moss served as the commander of the Silver Stag Legion.

He commanded two thousand soldiers who frequently fought pirates and had even defeated cavalry forces of the mercenary company known as the Second Sons in the Disputed Lands.

As tensions in the Disputed Lands increased, many of Tyrosh's ten thousand standing troops had been redeployed.

To maintain order, the city's Archons had hired additional mercenary companies to assist with defense.

Although only two thousand regular troops were present here, Saeraes Moss felt no fear at all.

In his eyes, the enemies before him were merely a disorganized rabble.

"Loose!"

Just as Saeraes Moss prepared to send envoys forward to demand surrender—

A thunderous roar erupted from the opposite side.

Immediately afterward, Saeraes saw the sky filled with flying arrows.

Among them were several massive scorpion bolts, each as thick as a man's fist.
