Chapter 18 - Chapter 18:

Fossil Pokémon.

They were revived from the lingering DNA in a fossil using the latest technology. However, since these Pokémon were revived, they could not mate and produce more of their kind, nor could they evolve.

It was for this very reason that any "living" was under the protection of the league so that their populations could one day be raised to healthy levels, reviving these ancient Pokémon in the truest sense.

There were three kinds of fossils regularly found across the Kanto Region.

- Helix Fossil:

- Dome Fossil

- Old Amber

The Helix and Dome Fossil were of two types, the Omanyte and Omastar Fossil and Kabuto and Kabutops Fossil, respectively. Old Amber, on the other hand, was the fossil of Aerodactyl.

These Pokémon all started with lower-tier strengths but held immense potential...however, compared to their counterparts...the 'real' fossil Pokémon, their potential and strength were quite lacking.

So far, only the Omanyte and Kabuto lines had real living specimens found after intense excavation; researchers still had no luck in finding a living Aerodactyl, and thus, the Old Amber was among the rarest fossils to be in demand. After all, from it could be revived an apex predator of the skies.

These species not only boosted immense strength but speed as well, and could be counted among the fastest Pokémon in the world.

Therefore, every Old Amber found was sold off in auctions, fetching a lot of money.

And so, when Daemon looked upon the Aerodactyl blitzing through the air above the battle arena, he could not help but frown.

No matter how strong a participant was, weren't gym leaders supposed to hold back? So, why was Flint sending out an Aerodactyl? A Pokémon so strong that no newbie trainer could defeat it.

"You must be wondering why I would send out an Aerodactyl, right?" Flint asked in a deep voice before he gave a smile...a grin. "These three pokeball each hold a revived Omastar, Kabutops and Aerodactyl. They also represent the highest level of challenge I can pose to a new trainer, respectively."

That was enough to answer a lot of questions Daemon had.

Gary Oak, a promising new trainer, had faced the second strongest Pokémon Flint could use. Now, the same gym leader had deemed Daemon worthy of being tested at the highest difficulty.

And when the black-haired boy looked closely at the predator in the skies closely enough, the strength of this Pokémon became apparent. Unlike the one used against Cross that was massive in size, this Aerodactyl was small...almost the size of an average Pidgeot, which was quite small for an Aerodactyl.

'So it is a recently revived fossil.' Once it became clear, the gears in his mind started shifting. "I hope the rewards are just as good." He turned to the gym leader and then to his Ralts. "Shall we?"

Stupid bird.

Flint nodded, impressed by the level of composure a young trainer had shown in front of an Aerodactyl. If it were any other trainer, they would already be sending complaints to the League about the unfairness of this battle. But then again, he would never use these fossils against a weak trainer...only against those he deemed worthy.

Such people, he only met once a few years ago, and they had never backed down from a fight. Moreover, that psychic fairy standing calmly on the battle arena...it was stupidly strong for its current evolution.

So much so that even after using an Aerodactyl, the gym leader believed the psychic fairy held a slight upper hand.

'Hmm?' The brown-haired man frowned as he felt a few water droplets on his skin and then sighed. 'Freaking kids these days.'

New trainers were supposed to use brute force...like that, Gary Oak...not status moves...much less weather conditions. Every new trainer, even some of those who reached the conference, rarely used weather conditions, considering them a waste of time. However, looking at the confident smile of the black-haired boy, Flint knew this was all a part of the plan the boy had put together to take him down.

But he was more annoyed for another reason...if the boy won, everyone was going to pull up with [Rain Dance] to his gym...

'Sigh! What a drag.' Flint shook his head and focused back on the trainer in front of him. His Aerodactyl was already taking passive damage from the [Rain Dance]. "Aerodactyl, rush her with [Steel Wing]."

~Roar~

The fossil Pokémon dipped down with its wings glowing in a metallic lustre.

Daemon looked at the incoming Aerodactyl with a frown. His plans so far were based around fighting an Onix as Flint's second Pokémon. This was fully unexpected and out of his plans.

His former plan was to set up Rain Dance and then kite the rock-serpent with Psybeam or Shadow Ball. However, the same could not be done since the fossil Pokémon was too fast.

"Alice, set up [Reflect]."

The psychic fairy raised her hands forward and conjured circular psychic shields in front of her. One...two...three...four...five...

Before the fossil Pokémon could get too close, there were ten psychic shields separating it from the psychic fairy.

[Reflect] was a move that decreased the strength of the incoming physical attacks. However, if the opponent was overwhelmingly strong, they could just break past these shields. Another weakness of this move was...

"Aerodactyl, flank her."

The flying fossil made a sharp turn in the air and then another as it approached Ralts from the side. The psychic shields stay stationary, no longer protecting the psychic fairy from the incoming [Steel Wings].

Ralts hurriedly pulled up another two [Reflects], but the Aerodactyl still blew past them.

~Bang~

For the first time in this battle, she was injured, and Daemon watched as his starter was sent flying from the centre to his side of the arena. His hand clenched tightly into a fist as he watched his Ralts groan in pain.

While she was exceptionally good at dealing damage and defence against special attacks, her physical defences were not as good. Thankfully, the two reflect that she had put up in a hurry relegated some damage away from her.

The Aerodactyl dipped down with another [Steel Wing].

"[Mystical Fire]."

Ralts groaned in pain, but thanks to her exceptional mastery of this move, fireball after fireball struck the incoming Aerodactyl.

The flying fossil brought its wings together to block the attacks, but since the wings at the moment were covered in steel-type energy, the damage dealt to the Aerodactyl was more than it had expected. Moreover, the psychic fairy had let out a barrage of these fireballs.

~Boom~

~Boom~

~Boom~

~Boom~

~Boom~

"Stay up and keep your distance." Flint gave the order, and the fossil Pokémon immediately flew up in the air, maintaining distance from the psychic fairy. "No harass her with [Rock Slide]."

~Roar~

The fossil Pokémon opened its massive jaw to let out a roar before creating large boulders using its rock-type energy and then hurling them at the psychic fairy.

"Dodge and use [Psychic] to deflect." Daemon clicked his tongue. None of the moves Ralts knew had enough range, and while she could brute force it by pumping more energy into her attacks, it would only leave her exhausted and at her opponent's mercy. 'But they too cannot keep this up.'

Aerodactyl flew through the air like a fighter jet, dropping boulder after boulder at the Ralts, who tried her best to dodge or parry them with her psychic focus.

Flint watched Ralts and his Aerodactyl, which was taking passive damage from the water-type energy in the rain. While the fossil Pokémon was holding on for now, it would not be long before the damage caught up. While he had a few ways to go around that, the gym leader decided not to.

Why?

Because he was a gym leader. His job was to test new trainers and see if they were fit to continue on the circuit. His end goal was never to beat them; if it was, no new trainer would ever be able to get past the first gym itself.

Moreover, the duo before him had already shown him everything he needed to judge them. The team he was using was already a tier higher than what he used for the first gym battles. The duo had put up a great fight and now it was time to end it...like what usually happened in lower-tier gyms.

"Aerodactyl, overwhelm her. Use everything you have."

~Roar~

The predator of ancient times gave a cold smirk as it used every bit of rock-type energy it had and threw dozens upon dozens of boulders until it was too much for the psychic fairy. It did not take long before she was buried beneath a mountain of boulders.

Flint watched with curious eyes as the black-haired boy did not respond to such an overwhelming attack. Usually, the trainer would panic; however, the boy just looked silently at the rubble and then...let out a sigh.

Daemon looked at the Everstone necklace that was always around Ralts's neck for the last week, fly into the air, and then break apart.

'It was inevitable.'

They could have played the long game if they were facing an Onix, but against an Aerodactyl that was going all out?

Bright light escaped from the gaps created by the large boulders stacked upon Ralts and then...

Swoosh

The boulders flew off in all directions and then came to a halt mid-air.

Aerodactyl was panting for breath as it had not only used much of its energy but also the passive damage [Rain Dance] had done to it over the last few minutes. However, it stubbornly kept flapping its wings until it saw a figure, half past three feet, floating in the air with the large boulders surrounding her.

You stupid fucking bird.

"~Aero?" The fossil Pokémon's eyes widened in fury at those words.

"Alice, language." Daemon chidded, but the smile on his face told a different story. "Now let it rain."

Ralts...Kirlia spread her arms outwards before thrusting them towards the Aerodactyl. The large boulders that once crushed her flew straight into the fossil Pokémon, who could not dodge any of them in time.

~Bang~

~Bang~

~Bang~

~Bang~

Now it was Aerodactyl's turn to be buried in the rubble. But the psychic fairy still did not have her revenge. So, with a wave of telekinesis, she once again raised the boulders and then brought them down upon the fossil Pokémon struggling to get up.

And then...again.

"That's enough." Daemon finally ordered when he saw the Aerodactyl no longer struggling.

Ralts flicked her hair and then she...vanished.

The next moment, she appeared right in front of her trainer with a smile on her face.

We won.

"Yes, we did." Daemon sat down to take her into a hug and then turned to the gym leader, who was recalling Aerodactyl to the pokeball.

"Aerodactyl is unable to battle; Ralts is the winner. Daemon Aragon of Clover Village is the victor of this gym challenge."
