Chapter 26 - Bond

One week.

Seven days of domesticity that had rewritten Riri's understanding of what living with someone could be.

She woke on day eight to the now-familiar smell of coffee and the sound of Samael moving through the kitchen with quiet efficiency. Her body had adapted to his morning routine. The 5 AM shower, the precise breakfast preparation, the way he'd have her coffee ready by the time she emerged from the bedroom at 6:30.

Loki had started sleeping at the foot of their bed. Their bed, because Samael had abandoned the couch on night three after Riri found him awake at 2 AM, staring at the ceiling, and told him to just sleep in the actual bed like a normal person. He'd hesitated exactly four seconds before gathering his pillow and claiming the left side, maintaining a careful twelve inches of space between them that had shrunk to six inches by morning.

Now, on day eight, that space was down to three inches. Sometimes less when Loki decided to sprawl across the middle and pushed them closer together.

Vesper had fully adopted Samael as his secondary napping spot. The fox would alternate between Riri's shoulder and Samael's lap with no pattern she could identify, just pure comfort-seeking behavior that suggested he viewed them as equally safe.

Vermillion had become insufferable. The six butterflies would mother-hen both of them relentlessly, transferring HP at the slightest injury, even during training sessions when damage was intentional. Yesterday, Samael had gotten a papercut opening a System Shop delivery. Vermillion had healed it before blood even appeared.

Seven days of watching him sketch in that worn notebook, his attention shifting between the page and wherever she happened to be. Cooking, reading, existing in ways that apparently warranted artistic documentation.

Seven days of casual touches that had become constant. His hand on her back when passing in the kitchen. Fingers brushing her shoulder to get her attention. The way he'd started pulling her against his side when they watched TV, arm draped across her shoulders like it belonged there.

Riri emerged from the bedroom at 6:32, hair pulled into a messy bun, wearing sleep shorts and one of Samael's t-shirts she'd stolen on day four. It was too large, hung to mid-thigh, and smelled like his soap.

He'd noticed. Hadn't said anything. But his gaze had lingered on her wearing his shirt with an intensity that made her skin warm.

She found him at the stove, making omelets with the same precision he applied to everything. Two mugs of coffee already waited on the counter.

Loki was eating his breakfast by the window. Vesper had claimed his usual spot on the kitchen island, grooming his face with meticulous attention. Vermillion dozed on the light fixture.

The penthouse felt settled. Complete. Like this was how it had always been and always would be.

Samael glanced up as she approached, his gaze tracking from her face down to the t-shirt, then back up. Something flickered in his expression. Possessive, satisfied. Then he returned his attention to the eggs.

"Morning," she said, picking up her coffee.

"Morning." He plated the omelets with efficient movements. "Sleep well?"

"You know I did. You were there."

"You were restless around 3 AM. Nightmare?"

"No. Just processing."

His hand stilled fractionally on the spatula. "Processing what?"

Riri took a sip of coffee to steady herself.

They ate in comfortable silence, morning light streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows. The city was quiet. Most Players still recovering from the grinding sprint of the past two months, hoarding energy for when Mandatory Missions began in seven days.

Seven days until the Hub opened. Seven days until Bonded pairs would receive their shared Sanctuaries and begin the real death game.

Seven days that Riri no longer needed.

She set down her fork with deliberate care. Took another sip of coffee. Met Samael's gaze across the table.

"I'm ready."

He went very still. "Ready for what?"

"To Bond." The words came out steadier than she felt. "I don't need the rest of the trial period. I'm sure."

Samael's expression didn't change, but his pupils dilated fractionally. His hand tightened around his coffee mug. "You're certain."

"Yes."

"This is permanent. Can't be undone except by death."

"I know."

"You'll be tied to me for the rest of your life. Shared missions, shared sanctuary, shared everything."

"I know, Samael." She leaned forward, elbows on the table. "You've been living here for a week. I've watched you feed my companions, cook breakfast, clean the kitchen, and fall asleep with Vesper on your lap while trying to pretend you're not secretly delighted by it. I've stolen your t-shirts and you've let me. You've drawn me seventeen times in that notebook you think I don't notice. And every single day, I've been more sure that this is right. So yes. I'm certain."

Silence stretched for five seconds.

Then Samael set down his coffee with careful precision. Stood. Circled the table until he was standing beside her chair.

His hand cupped her jaw, tilting her face up to meet his eyes.

"You're sure," he said again, quieter this time.

"I'm sure."

"Good." His thumb brushed across her cheekbone. "Because I've been waiting for you to say that for six days."

"Six days? You said you decided before the trial run."

"I did. But I knew you needed time." His gaze tracked across her face like he was memorizing every detail. "Watching you process was worth the wait."

"Watching me process?"

"You get this line right here when you're thinking too hard." His thumb moved to the space between her brows. "It appeared on day three. Disappeared on day six. I knew you'd decided when it vanished."

He'd been reading her micro-expressions. Tracking her decision-making process through body language alone.

"You're terrifying," Riri said, trying to ignore how her pulse had kicked up at his touch.

"You like it."

"I really do."

His mouth curved into that dangerous smirk. Then he pulled up his System interface with his free hand, still cradling her jaw with the other.

"Ready?" he asked.

Riri pulled up her own interface, navigating to the Bond protocols she'd researched on day four when she'd admitted to herself this was inevitable. "Ready."

The Bond initialization required simultaneous consent.

Riri selected [Initiate System Bond] from her menu. A golden notification appeared, overlaid with crimson text that could only belong to System #1.

[System Bond Request Detected][Partner: Samael Santoro - System #1 Host][Warning: System Bonds are PERMANENT. This action cannot be undone.]

[Bonding will result in:]Shared Mission DeploymentCombined Credit PoolMerged Sanctuary (Post-Prep Phase)Full Stat TransparencyShared Loot DistributionEmotional Resonance Link

[Accept Bond? Y/N]

Emotional Resonance Link. That was new. She hadn't seen that in her research.

"What's Emotional Resonance?" she asked.

Samael's expression shifted slightly. "Bonded pairs can sense each other's emotional states. Not thoughts. Just baseline feelings. Fear, pain, contentment. It strengthens over time."

"So you'll know if I'm scared during missions."

"And you'll know if I'm injured." His thumb continued its maddening pattern against her jaw. "It's protective. Makes coordination more efficient."

Of course he'd frame emotion-sharing as tactical advantage.

"Okay," Riri said. "I'm accepting."

"On three?"

"On three."

They counted together. "One. Two. Three."

Riri pressed YES.

Golden light exploded from her chest, washing over her in waves of warmth. Not painful. Just overwhelming, like her System was rewriting fundamental code in real-time.

Crimson light erupted from Samael simultaneously, darker and heavier, carrying the weight of System #1's destructive power.

The two lights collided between them. Gold and crimson twisted together, spiraling, merging into something new. Rose-gold radiance that pulsed with combined energy.

Riri gasped as the Bond snapped into place.

It felt like a fourth companion connection, except deeper. More fundamental. Lodged directly beside her heart instead of floating in her awareness like Loki, Vesper, and Vermillion.

She felt him. Not his thoughts but his presence, solid and unmovable, anchored beside her ribs like a second heartbeat. Emotions bled through: satisfaction, relief, possessive certainty that made her breath catch.

And underneath it all, warmth. So much warmth it threatened to overwhelm her.

[SYSTEM BOND COMPLETE][Riri Lee (System #2) + Samael Santoro (System #1) = BONDED PAIR][New Status: Soul-Bonded][Shared Mission Deployment: ACTIVE][Combined Credit Pool: ACTIVE][Stat Transparency: ACTIVE][Emotional Resonance Link: ACTIVE - Level 1]

[Congratulations! You are now permanently bound. May your partnership bring glory to Blue Star.]

System #2's interface exploded with confetti and sparkles.

[OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH HOST! YOU DID IT! BONDING COMPLETE! THIS IS SO EXCITING! ♡♡♡]

[Mission Complete: Bond with System #1][Rewards Obtained: Luxury Lottery Ticket x3, +100 Luck Stat, +50 to All Other Stats, Unique Pet Egg (S-Tier Minimum)]

Warmth flooded Riri's body as the rewards integrated. A hundred points to Luck, her already-absurd stat climbing even higher. Fifty points distributed across every other attribute, sharpening her reflexes, strengthening her body, expanding her mana pool.

She felt powerful. More than she had even at Level 20 cap.

Samael's rewards must have hit simultaneously because his pupils dilated, jaw tightening as his own stats adjusted.

The rose-gold light finally faded, leaving them standing in the kitchen, his hand still cupping her jaw, the Bond pulsing warm and certain between them.

"Hi," Riri said stupidly.

"Hi." His voice carried an edge of wonder. "I can feel you."

"Yeah. That's intense."

"It'll settle as we acclimate." His thumb resumed its pattern against her skin. "But right now, I can feel everything. Your contentment. Your curiosity." He paused, something heating in his gaze. "Your satisfaction."

"We should probably check our stats," Riri said quickly.

His smirk turned dangerous. "Probably."

She reluctantly pulled away from his touch and summoned her Status window. A second option appeared: [View Bonded Partner Status].

She selected it.

[Samael Santoro - Level 20 | Class: Sovereign Warlord (Unique - SSS)][HP: 2,847/2,847 | MP: 956/956 | Stamina: 1,456/1,456][Combat Power: 23,691][Strength: 384 | Agility: 267 | Constitution: 341][Intelligence: 142 | Wisdom: 98 | Charisma: 34 | Luck: 15]

Twenty-three thousand Combat Power. His stats were monstrous. Strength at 384, Constitution at 341. He was built like a living siege weapon.

And his Luck was fifteen. Fifteen. While hers was now 225 after the Bond reward.

"Your Luck stat is tragic," she said.

"Your Strength is sixty-two." He was clearly viewing her window. "That's functionally useless for direct combat."

"I have companions for direct combat."

"And I have overwhelming force." His gaze tracked down her stat distribution. "Your Charisma is two hundred and twenty-eight. That's excessive."

"It's for taming success rates."

"It's for making creatures submit through sheer force of personality." He scrolled further. Then stopped. His expression shifted to something between shock and amusement. "You have over a million credits."

"System #2 gives triple rewards."

"I know. But I've been spending mine on gear and consumables." His gaze lifted to hers. "You've been hoarding."

"I've been preparing. There's a difference."

"Our credit pool is now shared. That million is ours."

"Our million," Riri corrected, oddly satisfied by the possessive phrasing. "We're Bonded now. Everything is ours."

Something fierce flashed across his face. "Yes. It is."

The emotional resonance pulsed between them. His satisfaction matching hers, possessive certainty wrapping around her awareness like a physical touch.

"I need to use my lottery tickets," Riri said. "Three tickets. Want to watch?"

"Yes."

She pulled the first Luxury Lottery Ticket from her inventory. Tore it in half.

The golden wheel materialized, spinning with that familiar cascade of impossible options. Samael moved to stand behind her, close enough that his chest nearly brushed her shoulders.

The wheel slowed. Stopped.

[SSS-RANK: DANGER SENSE (Permanent Passive)][Effect: Detect hostile emotions within 200 yards. Works on both monsters and Players. Cannot be blocked or deceived.]

The ability integrated immediately, settling into her awareness like a sixth sense. She could suddenly feel the absence of threats in their immediate area. The penthouse was safe. The floors above and below held sleeping Players with no hostile intent.

"That's surveillance-grade utility," Samael said quietly. "You'll never be ambushed again."

"Two hundred yards is massive."

"It's perfect." His hand settled on her shoulder. "Next one."

Second ticket. Same process.

[S-RANK: SHADOW STEP (Active Skill)][Effect: Teleport up to 30 feet to any visible location. Cooldown: 5 seconds. MP Cost: 20]

Vesper, who'd been dozing on the kitchen island, immediately perked up. The fox gave an excited yip and proceeded to shadow-step around the room in rapid succession. Table to counter to floor to Riri's shoulder to Samael's head. Demonstrating the skill with obvious pride.

"I think he's showing you how useful it is," Samael said, amused.

"He's been waiting for me to get this skill so we can teleport together." Riri scratched behind Vesper's ears as the fox settled on her shoulder, radiating smug satisfaction through their bond.

Third ticket. Final pull.

The wheel spun longer this time. Settled on something that made System #2's interface explode with hearts and sparkles.

[SSS-RANK: TEMPTRESS SCENT (Permanent Passive - Vanity)][Effect: Choose a custom body scent that remains constant regardless of environmental factors. Scent persists through blood, dirt, sweat, and other contaminants. Can be changed once per month.]

A menu appeared with hundreds of options. Florals, musks, fruits, combinations thereof.

Riri scrolled through, overwhelmed by choices.

"Honey and vanilla cream."

She turned to look at Samael. "What?"

"Pick honey and vanilla cream." His voice had dropped lower, carrying an edge that made her skin tingle. "It suits you."

"You have a favorite smell now?"

"It's your body wash scent. I noticed on day two." His hand moved from her shoulder to the nape of her neck, fingers threading into her hair. "Honey and vanilla cream. Choose it."

Heat flooded her face. "That's..."

"Perfect. It's perfect." His thumb brushed the base of her skull. "And I want you to smell like that all the time. Even during missions when everything else is blood and death."

The possessive certainty in his tone, and through the Bond, made her pulse race.

She selected [Honey & Vanilla Cream].

The skill activated. Warmth spread across her skin as the scent permanently integrated, subtle enough not to overwhelm but present enough to notice.

Samael's eyes darkened. His grip on her neck tightened fractionally. "Good choice."

"You're ridiculous."

"You like it."

"I really do."

He pulled her closer, until her back pressed against his chest, his chin resting on top of her head. The Bond pulsed between them. Satisfaction, contentment, possessive certainty that she was his now, permanently, bound by System contract and mutual decision.

Riri glanced at her remaining rewards. The Unique Pet Egg sat in her inventory.

[Unique Pet Egg - SSS-Rank][Allows Player to select any SSS-Grade or lower pet from the Unique Pet List][Note: Selection is permanent. Choose carefully.]

She stared at it for a long moment. The egg represented massive potential. Access to creatures most Players would never even see, let alone tame.

But she had no idea what her current limitations were. What synergies existed between her new stats and potential companions. What gaps in her current team composition needed filling.

"I'm saving this," she said, dismissing the egg back to inventory. "I want to test my new strength in a few dungeons first. See what I'm actually capable of now before committing to a fourth companion."

Samael's satisfaction pulsed through the Bond. "Smart. Informed decisions are always optimal."

"We should test the new skills," he continued. "And adjust to the Bond's emotional feedback."

"You want to run dungeons."

"C-Rank content. Something challenging enough to stress-test our combined capabilities."

Riri leaned into his warmth, feeling three companion bonds and one soul-bond thrumming beside her heart. "Alright. Let's go see what a Bonded pair can do."

His satisfaction pulsed through the link, matching hers exactly.

They had seven days until Mandatory Missions. Seven days to optimize their combined power.
