Chapter 18 - The Queen's Wrath

The Boss Room was a cathedral of flesh.

Riri stepped through the archway and her breath caught despite the respirator. The chamber stretched upward into darkness, cathedral-height ceilings lost in shadow, walls that pulsed with bioluminescent veins thick as her arm. The floor was soft, organic, giving slightly with each step like walking on something's tongue.

And at the chamber's center, suspended in a web of pulsing tissue, was the Queen.

[Crimson Swarm Queen - Level 15 - RAID BOSS | HP: 15,000/15,000]

Fifteen feet tall at least, body a grotesque fusion of insect and something else. Too many limbs, wings like stained glass forged from coagulated blood, a face that might have been beautiful if it wasn't split down the middle by mandibles lined with human teeth. Her eyes were compound, hundreds of facets catching the violet light, all focused on the party as they entered.

The archway sealed behind them with a wet sound.

[BOSS ENCOUNTER INITIATED | Retreat disabled][Victory Condition: Defeat Crimson Swarm Queen][Failure Condition: Total Party Elimination]

The Queen's mandibles clicked together. The sound echoed through the chamber like breaking bone.

Then the walls birthed her army.

Not butterflies. Larvae the size of large dogs ripped through the pulsing tissue, bodies segmented and pale, mouths circular and lined with rotating teeth. Hundreds of them, pouring from every surface.

[Crimson Larva - Level 11 | HP: 340/340][Crimson Larva - Level 12 | HP: 380/380]

The HP bars flooded Riri's vision. Fifty. Seventy. A hundred.

"FORMATION!" Theo's voice barely carried over the sound of tearing flesh and chittering mandibles.

The larvae swarmed.

Theo's sword carved through the first wave, shield raised to block the second. Delilah's war hammer crushed three in a single overhead swing. Bryce and Alex's spells lit the chamber, fire and ice exploding into the swarm, clearing gaps that immediately filled with more bodies.

Yui's arrows found eyes, throats, soft tissue between segments. Each shot killed. There were too many.

Loki lunged into the mass, jaws crushing a Level 11's head. Acidic blood sprayed against the wolf's fur.

[Loki HP: 687/800]

Vesper became a gray blur, shadow-stepping between targets. Vermillion split into their six component forms, diving and weaving through the swarm, HP Drain activating in streams of red mist.

[Vermillion HP: 780/780]

But for every larva killed, two more emerged from the walls.

A larva got too close. Riri slashed, blade opening its side. It turned on her, circular mouth widening, rows of teeth spinning. It lunged.

Then exploded.

Samael stood beside her, hand extended, expression unchanged.

"Stay close," he said.

Another larva charged from her left. Gone before she registered the threat. Three more from above. Compressed to mist.

"The adds are infinite!" Riddick's voice cracked with panic. "We need to kill the Queen or we're done!"

Theo drove his sword through a larva's skull, kicked the corpse away. "Ranged DPS, focus the boss! Forget the adds!"

Bryce and Alex redirected. Fire and ice slammed into the Queen's suspended form.

[Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 14,234/15,000]

Barely a dent.

The Queen's mandibles opened wide.

She screamed.

Not noise. Force. A shockwave of compressed air and rage that slammed into the party like a physical wall. Riri's boots slid backward across the organic floor, ears ringing even through the respirator.

[Crimson Swarm Queen used Sovereign's Shriek!][All Players stunned for 3 seconds][All larvae gain +50% Attack Speed]

The world moved in slow motion. Riri's body wouldn't respond, muscles locked, vision swimming. The party had frozen mid-combat.

The larvae surged forward, mandibles spinning, acidic saliva dripping from rotating teeth.

Then pressure erupted from behind her.

A barrier. Invisible force expanding outward from Samael's position in a perfect sphere, encompassing the entire party.

The larvae hit it and stopped. Suspended in mid-lunge, frozen against whatever he'd created.

[System #1 Host used Kinetic Barrier - Duration: 5 seconds]

The stun wore off. Riri gasped, control returning to her limbs.

Theo's eyes went wide as he registered the suspended larvae inches from his face.

"MOVE!" Samael's voice cut through the confusion. "Four seconds."

The party scattered. Theo and Delilah dove left. The Mages rolled backward. Yui sprinted for a jutting piece of wall tissue and used it as a platform.

Riri stayed where she was. Samael's barrier was centered on her position.

The larvae remained frozen, pressing against invisible force, mandibles spinning uselessly.

Three seconds.

The Queen noticed. Her compound eyes tracked the barrier, then down to its source. To Samael. To the girl he was protecting.

Her mandibles clicked rapidly.

Two seconds.

"Riri, move!" Theo's voice from across the chamber.

She started to run. Felt Samael's hand catch her wrist.

"Not yet."

One second.

The barrier dropped.

A hundred larvae lunged simultaneously.

Samael's other hand extended.

The entire swarm compressed into nothing. Every larva within thirty feet, gone. Red mist hung in the air for half a heartbeat before dissipating.

[Enemy Defeated: Crimson Larva - Level 11] x47[Enemy Defeated: Crimson Larva - Level 12] x38

The Queen shrieked. Pure rage this time.

Her wings tore free from the tissue web. Twenty-foot span, veins pulsing with crimson light. She dropped from the ceiling and landed with enough force to crack the organic ground.

[Crimson Swarm Queen - PHASE 2 ACTIVATED][HP: 14,234/15,000][New Ability Unlocked: Royal Guard Protocol]

The walls birthed something new. Not larvae. Massive butterflies, wolf-sized, wings edged with bone-like protrusions sharp enough to cut steel.

[Crimson Royal Guard - Level 13 - ELITE | HP: 1,200/1,200]

Six of them, positioned between the party and the Queen.

Theo's sword wavered. "We can't... there's too many."

"Yes, we can." Samael's hand was still around Riri's wrist, grip firm enough that she could feel his pulse through the tactical glove. Steady. Unhurried. He looked down at her. "Your swarm. Can they drain the Guards?"

Vermillion pulsed eager through the bond before she could answer.

"Yes," she said.

"Good. Target the Guards. I'll handle the Queen."

"Alone?" Delilah's voice cracked. "She has fifteen thousand HP!"

Samael released Riri's wrist and walked forward.

Just walked. No weapons drawn. No defensive stance. Like he was crossing a street.

The Royal Guards moved to intercept. His hand flicked once. Three Guards compressed to nothing.

[Enemy Defeated: Crimson Royal Guard - Level 13 - ELITE] x3

The remaining three hesitated, wings stuttering mid-beat like their programming couldn't process what they'd witnessed.

He kept walking.

The Queen's mandibles opened. A sphere of concentrated crimson energy formed between them, pulsing with enough power to make the air vibrate.

[Crimson Swarm Queen charging Royal Devastation - Damage: 2,000 AOE]

Theo raised his shield uselessly. Avery's staff glowed white, attempting a heal that wouldn't matter.

The sphere launched.

Samael raised his hand. The attack stopped three feet from his palm like he'd hit pause on reality itself.

He closed his fist.

The sphere imploded. Energy collapsed inward, condensing into something the size of a marble.

He flicked it back.

[Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 8,947/15,000]

Her own attack. Returned with interest.

The Queen staggered, wings beating frantically. Her shriek carried pain this time.

"Now," Samael said.

Riri didn't hesitate. "Vermillion. Guards. Drain them."

The six butterflies split formation, three targeting each remaining Royal Guard, wings pulsing with crimson light as they latched on. The Elite creatures thrashed but Vermillion's coordination was perfect. They stayed attached, draining steadily.

[Crimson Royal Guard HP: 843/1,200][Crimson Royal Guard HP: 691/1,200]

Loki lunged at the nearest weakened Guard, jaws finding its throat. The combination of HP drain and the Alpha's crushing bite was too much.

[Enemy Defeated: Crimson Royal Guard - Level 13 - ELITE]

Vesper shadow-stepped onto another Guard's back, claws raking across wing joints. The membrane tore. The creature fell.

[Enemy Defeated: Crimson Royal Guard - Level 13 - ELITE]

The final Guard tried to flee. Vermillion pursued, draining it mid-flight until it dropped from the air.

[Enemy Defeated: Crimson Royal Guard - Level 13 - ELITE][Vermillion HP: 780/780 - Fully Restored]

Meanwhile Samael had closed the distance to the Queen. She towered over him by ten feet, mandibles snapping, wings creating hurricane-force gusts that should have thrown him backward.

He stood perfectly still.

His hand pressed against her thorax.

"Down."

The Queen's legs buckled. Her body slammed into the organic floor, cratering the ground.

[Crimson Swarm Queen - STUNNED | Duration: 10 seconds]

Samael looked back at the party. At Riri specifically.

"Finish it."

Theo didn't waste the opening. "ALL DPS, NOW!"

Bryce and Alex's spells hit simultaneously. Fire and ice erupted across the Queen's stunned form. Yui's arrows found compound eyes, punching through the faceted surface. Delilah's war hammer cracked chitin with a sound like breaking pottery.

[Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 6,203/15,000]

Riri moved forward, Loki and Vesper flanking. Vermillion dove as one unit, six butterflies targeting the Queen's wings, shredding the left membrane completely.

[Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 5,547/15,000]

The stun wore off.

The Queen surged upward, single wing beating frantically, listing badly. She couldn't fly. Just hover unsteadily, mandibles clicking in rage and pain.

Her compound eyes found Samael. Then shifted to Riri standing behind him.

The Queen lunged. Not at Samael. At Riri.

Loki roared and intercepted, jaws catching the Queen's foreleg. The impact drove the wolf backward ten feet, claws scraping trenches in the organic floor.

[Loki HP: 523/800]

The Queen's mandibles opened wide, aiming for the Alpha's throat.

Samael crossed fifteen feet in a blur, hand catching the Queen's other foreleg mid-strike. His grip tightened. The limb crumpled.

[Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 4,892/15,000]

She thrashed. He didn't let go. Just stood there, holding her in place.

"Now."

The party unleashed everything. Every spell, every skill, every ounce of remaining stamina.

Fire. Ice. Arrows. Blades. Vermillion's draining light. Loki's crushing jaws. Vesper's raking claws.

[Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 3,241/15,000][Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 1,876/15,000][Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 734/15,000][Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 203/15,000]

Riri drove her dagger through the gap between chitin plates at the Queen's throat. Twisted.

[Critical Hit!][Crimson Swarm Queen HP: 0/15,000]

The massive body went limp. Samael released his grip. The Queen collapsed, wings spreading across the chamber floor like a crimson carpet.

Silence.

Then golden light exploded from the corpse.

[RAID BOSS DEFEATED: Crimson Swarm Queen - Level 15][DUNGEON CLEAR: Corrupted Den - Rank C][FIRST CLEAR BONUS APPLIED][Calculating rewards...]

The notifications flooded everyone's vision. Experience gains. Credit earnings. Loot materializing from the Queen's dissolving body.

Riri wasn't looking at the rewards.

Samael's dark eyes found hers across the chamber. Held.

She didn't look away.

The chamber's walls began to dissolve, dungeon collapsing now that its core was dead.

[Exit portal available. Evacuation recommended.]

Golden light materialized at the center. The party moved toward it, exhausted but alive.

Samael waited until Riri passed him.

Then fell into step three feet behind her.
