Chapter 6 - Rat's vs. Riri's Luck Stat

Riri sidestepped left. The rat's trajectory carried it past her shoulder, claws raking empty air. It hit the ground with a wet thud, scrambled for purchase on the tile, spun to face her. The thing was uglier up close than the health bar suggested: fur matted into rough clumps, skin visible in patches where it had worn through, jaw hanging slightly too wide for its skull. Her knife was already moving, a downward slash aimed at the creature's exposed flank. The blade connected. Fur parted. Flesh opened. Blood the color of old oil spilled across cracked tile.

[Corrupted Rat HP: 28/45]

The rat shrieked, high-pitched and distorted, nothing like an animal should sound. It twisted mid-leap, jaws snapping toward her wrist. Riri yanked her arm back. Teeth clicked shut an inch from skin. She kicked, boot connecting with the rat's ribcage. The impact traveled up her shin. The rat skidded across the platform and hit a support pillar with a dull crack.

[Corrupted Rat HP: 0/45]

It didn't get up. The body twitched twice and went still. The HP bar flickered and vanished.

Riri stood motionless, knife dripping black blood onto her boot. Her heart hammered against her ribs, adrenaline burning clean through her chest. The rat's corpse dissolved into gray mist, wisps curling upward before vanishing entirely. She exhaled slowly and checked her Status.

[Riri Lee - Level 1][HP: 120/120 | Stamina: 94/100]

Six stamina points for one encounter. She could work with that.

The platform was quiet for exactly long enough to feel wrong. Then movement erupted from the left tunnel. Three more rats burst onto the platform, spread in a loose arc. Two Level 3s, one Level 4. Their health bars hovered like accusatory eyes above heads that were subtly, wrongly shaped, skulls too elongated, ears torn to ragged points.

They didn't charge immediately. Instead they circled, low to the ground, tails lashing, eyes locked on her. Pack tactics. The Level 4 hung at the back, larger than the others by a third, its corrupted eyes tracking her knife hand specifically.

Riri shifted her weight, keeping the blade between her and the closest rat. Her gaze moved across the platform without moving her head: benches bolted to the wall, support pillars spaced eight feet apart, a maintenance door hanging off one hinge at the far end. Open ground favored numbers. She needed a choke point.

The Level 4 lunged first. She ran.

Her boots pounded across tile as she made for the narrow gap between two support pillars. The rats followed, screeching, claws scraping concrete in an irregular rhythm that was worse than if it had been uniform. She reached the gap, pivoted hard, braced her back against one pillar with her knife arm forward and her left shoulder pressed to stone.

The first rat squeezed through without hesitating.

Riri's knife met it mid-leap. Blade punched through the creature's throat, angled upward into its skull. She felt the resistance, the brief moment where bone pushed back before giving way. The rat convulsed once, weight dropping against her forearm, and went limp.

She kicked the corpse backward into the gap. It wedged between the pillars, a rough barricade of matted fur and dissolving mass. The second rat hit it at full speed, scrambled for footing on the unstable surface, and tried to jump over. Riri caught it mid-arc, driving the blade into its side and dragging through ribs and viscera. The smell hit immediately: sharp and chemical and wrong in the back of her throat.

[Corrupted Rat HP: 12/45]

It twisted despite the damage, jaws snapping at her forearm. Teeth grazed tactical fabric, didn't pierce, but the impact jarred her grip. The knife slipped in her palm, blood-slick handle rotating a half-turn before she tightened her fingers. She grabbed the rat by its scruff with her free hand. The fur was coarser than it looked, stiff with dried fluid. She slammed its skull against the pillar. Once. The crack was audible. Twice. The health bar bottomed out and the body went slack.

The Level 4 hadn't moved. It sat just beyond the gap, watching. Its eyes moved from the knife to her face to the corpses blocking its path. Smarter than the others. It wasn't going to force through a bottleneck that had just killed two of its pack.

[Stamina: 76/100]

The rat began circling the long way around, staying close to the wall, looking for another approach. Riri tracked it without moving her feet. Her breath came steady now, the initial adrenaline spike settling into something more workable. The knife handle was slick. She adjusted her grip, rotating her hand until the texture of the grip caught properly.

The rat found what it was looking for: a gap beneath the bench bolted to the wall on her left, just wide enough to squeeze through. It dove without telegraphing the move. Riri was already vaulting the bench before it disappeared underneath.

She landed in a crouch on the other side, knife level, weight forward on the balls of her feet.

The rat burst from beneath the bench and stopped dead.

A rusted support beam had collapsed across the bench's back at some point, whether recently or years ago she couldn't tell, creating a cage of corroded metal between the bench and the wall. The rat was trapped, wedged between iron and tile, snarling and thrashing. Its claws scored the concrete in long parallel lines.

Riri stared at it. The beam hadn't been there ten seconds ago. She was certain of it.

[Luck Proc: Environmental Advantage!]

System #2's interface sparkled at the edge of her vision, unbearably cheerful. She stepped forward and drove the knife through the rat's skull. The thrashing stopped.

Warmth flooded her limbs, exhaustion evaporating mid-breath. The ache in her forearm from the jarred grip dissolved. Her stamina bar refilled. Riri straightened slowly, testing the feeling, and wiped the blade on her tactical pants. A long smear of black ichor crossed the fabric.

Four down. Eighty-three remaining.

She pulled up her Status and put all fifteen points into Agility without hesitation. Dodging kept her alive.

[Agility: 32 → 47]

The adjustment hit immediately, subtle but distinct. Her next step felt lighter, the floor more responsive under her boot. Like the distance between intention and movement had shortened. She took two more steps just to confirm it, then rolled her shoulders and checked the knife edge against the emergency lighting. Still sharp. The blade had held.

The platform stretched ahead, empty except for corpses dissolving into mist. The left tunnel gaped dark and exhaled that same slow, rhythmic cold air. Somewhere inside it, something moved. She could hear claws on concrete, more than four sets, not yet close.

Riri tightened her grip on the knife and started walking toward the sound.
