Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 : Sudden Kiss

Henry ran up the apartment steps and stopped in front of Madison's door. For a moment he just stood there catching his breath.

He wasn't even sure why he had come back this quickly. Maybe because she had sounded frightened on the phone… or maybe because a terrified call from a beautiful woman tends to make people move faster than they admit.

He knocked.

The door opened slowly.

Madison stood there with slightly red eyes, her face tense. It didn't take much effort to see she had been crying.

Henry's expression softened a little.

"Madison… what happened?" he asked.

She didn't answer immediately. Instead she lifted her arm slightly and showed him the dark bracelet around her wrist.

"I tried to take it off," she said quietly. "It won't come off."

Henry glanced at the bracelet. He already knew that part.

Madison looked up at him again, her voice shaking just enough to betray how scared she still was.

"Tell me the truth… something's wrong with me."

"I attacked you, right?" Madison asked, her voice shaking. "I'm the same monster as Glen?"

Henry looked at her for a moment without answering. The fear in her eyes wasn't just confusion anymore—it was realization starting to settle in.

He sighed quietly.

This was exactly the part he had hoped to avoid. No one took this kind of truth well. Finding out you weren't fully human anymore wasn't something people just accepted in a calm conversation.

"It's going to take some time," Henry said.

He stepped inside the apartment and closed the door behind him.

Madison stood there watching him, waiting for the answer she already half-knew.

Henry leaned against the wall for a moment before speaking again.

"You didn't kill anyone," he said first. "And you're not like Glen."

Madison frowned slightly. "But I attacked you."

Henry nodded.

"Yeah. You did."

A while later the apartment had gone quiet again.

Henry was sitting on the sofa while Madison sat beside him, her hands clasped together as if she was trying to steady herself.

Madison stared at the floor for a moment before speaking.

"Why don't I remember attacking you?" she asked slowly. "Why couldn't I control myself?"

Henry leaned back slightly against the sofa.

"The werewolf transformation is more like a second nature," he explained. "During the lunar week the wolf takes control. Instincts kick in and the human part of the mind gets pushed aside."

Madison looked at him, her brow tightening.

"Instincts?"

Henry nodded.

"They hunt," he said plainly. "And when they hunt, they look for one thing."

Madison's voice dropped a little.

"Hunt…?"

Henry didn't soften the answer.

"Human hearts."

Madison stared at the floor for a moment, her breathing uneven.

"Why did I even turn into this monster?" she asked quietly. "I don't want to become something that kills people every month."

"All it takes is one bite," Henry said finally. "A single bite from a werewolf can turn a human into one."

Madison's head slowly lifted.

The memory came back immediately.

"A month ago…" she said, her voice tightening. "I was mugged outside my office."

"There was a man," she continued. "He attacked me. I thought he was just trying to rob me, but he bit my shoulder before I managed to get away."

She swallowed.

"I went to the hospital that night. They said it looked like an animal bite."

Henry didn't interrupt. The story fit perfectly.

Madison looked at him again.

"So that's when it happened," she said.

Silence settled between them for a few seconds before Madison asked the question she had clearly been holding back.

"Is there a cure?"

"No," Henry said.

Madison looked down at her hands again. The answer seemed to drain whatever hope she had left.

"Then why didn't you kill me?" she asked after a moment. "You almost did."

Henry let out a quiet breath.

"Well…" he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "For some reasons."

Madison studied him for a few seconds, then something in her expression changed. A small, tired smile appeared on her face.

"Then kill me."

Henry blinked.

"What?"

"I don't want to live like this," Madison said. "Now that I know what I am… sooner or later I'll hurt someone."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"I don't want to wake up one day and find out I killed someone."

Henry shook his head immediately.

"No."

Madison looked at him again, confused.

Henry nodded toward her wrist.

"You don't need to die," he said. "The thing on your hand is… a magical restraint. It can suppress the wolf inside you."

Madison glanced at the bracelet.

"If I hadn't used that earlier," Henry continued, "you wouldn't have turned back into a human when you did."

He didn't mention what the bracelet actually was.

Madison slowly touched the bracelet, turning her wrist under the light as if trying to understand what it really was.

"So… this keeps the wolf from coming out?" she asked.

Henry nodded.

"And you can't remove it by normal means," he said. "So yeah… you don't need to worry about killing anyone anymore."

Madison looked at the bracelet again, then at Henry.

For a moment she didn't say anything. The tension that had been sitting in her shoulders all night slowly drained away, replaced by something closer to relief.

Then she suddenly moved.

Before Henry could react, Madison leaned sideways and threw her arms around him. The momentum pushed him backward against the sofa cushions.

"Thank you," she said quickly.

And before he could respond, she kissed him.

Henry froze for a second, clearly not expecting that reaction at all.
