Chapter 9 - THE BRANCH THAT ALMOST FAILED

The journey to Red Stone City took six days.

Doctor Chen studied medical texts across from me in the carriage, their System interface flickering occasionally. We had not spoken much since leaving Azure Cloud. There was nothing to say. We both understood what this expansion meant.

If we succeeded, the Merchant of Fates became replicable. A template for continental domination.

If we failed, we learned that our model only worked in familiar territory.

I did not intend to fail.

Red Stone City appeared on the horizon like a wound. Red earth walls, red stone buildings, red dust coating everything. The Crimson Sky Sect controlled this region, and they controlled it through weapons. Iron mines, forging techniques, distribution networks that supplied half the continent.

A city built on war meant a city built on commerce. Weapons needed buyers. Injuries needed healers. Power needed funding.

Perfect.

The warehouse Fat Hong's contacts had secured was near the western wall. Three stories, a courtyard, and enough space to establish both clinic and auction operations. Doctor Chen began converting the ground floor immediately while I surveyed our new territory.

Then Xu Liang arrived.

He was younger than expected. Mid twenties, handsome, dressed in robes that cost more than most people's annual income. His smile was perfect. His eyes were not.

"Chen Wei," he said, bowing with exact precision. "The Merchant of Fates. We have heard interesting things."

"Xu Liang," I replied. "The Xu Family Auction House. Three generations of success."

He stepped past me into the warehouse, examining the space. "The previous tenant failed because he tried to compete directly. He did not understand that in Red Stone, the market is about who you know, not what you sell."

"I see."

"The Crimson Sky Sect purchases seventy percent of all goods in this city. They have exclusive contracts with my family. If you attempt to sell to them, you will find their procurement officers have... loyalty." He turned, smile hardening. "There is room here for smaller customers. Independent cultivators, minor trading houses. Build your business serving them. But if you try to take our customers, we will respond. We have been responding to threats for three hundred years."

He left without waiting for reply.

Doctor Chen emerged from the office. "Direct."

"Effective. He has the sect locked down. Exclusive contracts, generations of trust. We cannot break that through competition."

"Then what do we do?"

I moved to the window, watching Xu Liang's carriage disappear. "We do what he suggested. We serve the customers he ignores. Independent cultivators. Minor trading houses. We build such a strong position in that market that when the sect eventually becomes dissatisfied, we are the obvious alternative."

"And if they never become dissatisfied?"

"Then we create dissatisfaction." I turned from the window. "Your clinic treats everyone?"

"Of course."

"Then treat the sect's procurement officers. Heal their families. Build relationships that happen in treatment rooms, not auction halls. By the time Xu Liang realizes we are a threat, we will have a customer base he cannot touch."

Doctor Chen nodded and left to prepare.

I spent the next three weeks visiting every independent cultivator and minor trading house in Red Stone City. There were hundreds of them, each with needs the Xu Family ignored. A Qi Gathering cultivator who could not afford foundation pills. A Foundation Establishment fighter with a broken sword and no access to sect smithies. A trading house unable to ship goods across sect borders.

I sold them solutions. Modified techniques from Azure Cloud archives. Repairs through Madame Luo's network. Shipping space in our caravans at below market rates.

Each transaction was small. Fifty spirit stones here. One hundred there. But each built something more valuable than profit. Loyalty. Information channels. A network of customers who would remember the merchant who served them when no one else would.

By the end of third week, I had eighty nine regular clients.

Xu Liang had not noticed. His attention was on the sect, on his exclusive contracts, on the competition he expected from other auction houses.

He did not see the foundation beneath his feet.

The crisis came on day twenty two.

Doctor Chen entered my office without knocking, face pale beneath their medical mask. "The Crimson Sky Sect's head procurement officer. Xu Liang's primary contact. He arrived at clinic today with spiritual corruption. Advanced stage. His meridians are collapsing."

"Can you treat him?"

"Days. Maybe a week. After that, even stabilization fails."

I processed the information. If this man died, Xu Liang lost his primary contact. The exclusive contracts became vulnerable. But the new procurement officer would be chosen by sect politics, not merit. Could be anyone. Could be hostile to us.

"Stabilize him," I said. "A week is enough."

"For what?"

I activated the communication crystal. Xiao Hong's face appeared, tired but alert.

"The green Fate Token," I said. "Purification type. Send it immediately."

She nodded and moved without question.

I turned back to Doctor Chen. "Prepare your patient for transfer. He will be here when the solution arrives."

Zheng Yuan was conscious when I visited him in the clinic, but barely. His skin carried the grey tinge of spiritual corruption that local healers had failed to address.

"Merchant Chen," he rasped. "Your healer says you can save me."

"I can offer you the opportunity to save yourself. The treatment exists. It is expensive."

"You want money? The sect will pay."

"I do not want money." I sat beside his bed. "I want introduction. When you recover, when you return to your position, I want you to bring me to the sect's procurement committee. I want the chance to bid on contracts currently exclusive to Xu Family."

"You want me to betray my partner."

"I want you to honor your responsibility to the sect. Exclusive contracts serve Xu Family. Competitive bidding serves Crimson Sky." I held up the Fate Token, letting its green glow catch his attention. "This saves your life. In exchange, you simply open the door. You do not guarantee I win. You just allow competition."

He stared at the token. At me. At the door where Xu Liang's influence ended and his own mortality began.

"If I refuse, I die."

"Correct."

"If I accept, Xu Liang becomes enemy."

"Also correct."

He laughed, a dry rasping sound. "You offer me choice between death and political suicide."

"I offer you choice between certain death and uncertain survival. Politics you can navigate. Death is permanent." I stood. "You have until midnight. Doctor Chen's stabilization ends then."

I left him to calculate.

He accepted at eleven forty seven.

The Fate Token merged with his spiritual core, purifying the corruption. The System tracked the transaction, recording the narrative weight of saving a man who should have died.

[TRANSACTION COMPLETED: LIFE SALE]

[Revenue: Zheng Yuan's introduction + future contracts]

[Reputation +800]

[Red Stone City Branch: Status UPGRADED to Operational]

By morning, Zheng Yuan was walking. By evening, I received invitation to present my credentials to the procurement committee.

Xu Liang learned of this three days later, when his exclusive contract came up for renewal and found competition for the first time in a decade.

He came to the warehouse personally. No smile this time.

"You played me."

"I played the market. You assumed your relationships were assets. They are. But assets can be depreciated. Loyalty can be purchased at appropriate price."

"My family has run auctions here for three hundred years."

"And now the sect has choice. Choice creates competition. Competition creates better terms." I gestured around us. "You serve your customers. I serve mine. Over time, the balance shifts."

"Or I crush you now."

"You could try. But consider the cost. I have Zheng Yuan's gratitude. I have eighty nine independent clients who depend on me. I have the healer who saved the procurement officer's life. If you attack me, you attack them."

Xu Liang's jaw tightened. He understood. I had built defenses he could not breach without destroying himself.

"This is not over."

"Nothing ever is. Markets evolve. Competitors become partners. Partners become competitors." I extended my hand. "But for now, we coexist."

He stared at my hand. Then, slowly, he took it.

"Your grandfather built this business with one warehouse and three employees. He served customers no one else would serve. I am doing the same." I released his hand. "The question is whether you inherit his vision or just his position."

He left without reply. But I saw the calculation in his eyes. The beginning of shift from enemy to something else.

Doctor Chen joined me at the window. "He will not give up."

"No. But he will think before acting. That is enough for now." I turned from the window. "We have achieved what we needed. A foothold. Access to sect contracts. A network of independent clients. Now we build."

"And Xu Liang?"

"Xu Liang becomes either partner or cautionary tale. His choice."

I picked up the communication crystal. Xiao Hong's face appeared.

"Success?" she asked.

"Success. Xu Liang is neutralized. Zheng Yuan is ally. The branch is viable."

"And the cost?"

I considered. The Fate Token used. The obligation created that would eventually need repayment. The narrative weight invested in a man who might become liability.

"Acceptable. Everything has price. This one was within budget."

She nodded. "Silver Moon Valley is ready for evaluation when you return."

I looked at the warehouse around me. At the clinic below, treating patients. At the city beyond, where Xu Liang was regrouping, where Zheng Yuan was consolidating his recovery, where hundreds of potential customers had not yet learned our name.

"One branch at a time," I said. "One transaction at a time."

The crystal flickered and dimmed.

Outside, Red Stone City continued its endless commerce. The Xu Family maintained its auctions. Independent cultivators struggled for survival.

And in a warehouse near the western wall, the Merchant of Fates was building something none of them understood.

Not a business. A market.

Where everything had price.

And business, finally, was good.
