Chapter 25 - 25. The Pact (II)

The sun slanted through the tall windows of the Beaumont estate, casting long, warm streaks across the polished wooden floor. May sat on the edge of her bed, knees drawn up, staring at a small, leather-bound notebook. Inside, every page was filled with scribbles, sketches, and lists but one page stood apart. Written in a careful, looping hand were words that had shaped her life more than any other:

"For Elsie. Freedom first, always."

May remembered the day vividly. They had been ten. Both girls sat on the wide windowsill overlooking the garden. Their parents had spent hours dictating rules, emphasizing hierarchy, legacy, and the importance of "the chosen heir."

Elsie, bright and curious, radiated freedom in every gesture. May, quieter, observed her, feeling both envy and love. She wanted her sister to soar, even if it meant she had to remain in the shadows.

"I don't want her life to be like mine," May whispered.

Elsie blinked. "Why not?"

"Because… you should be free. And I… I'll make sure you are."

Elsie grinned. "How?"

May's smile carried defiance and determination. "We make a pact. If one day either of us feels trapped… we switch. You get my life, I get yours. And we protect each other, no matter what."

Elsie's eyes widened, then narrowed in consideration. Finally, she nodded. "Deal. But promise me we'll never break it."

"We won't," May replied, heart pounding with both fear and thrill.

From that day, their identical features became the ultimate camouflage. Their resemblance wasn't just physical; it was a secret weapon, a perfect way to trade lives without raising suspicion.

The first time they enacted the pact, it had been exhilarating and terrifying. May stepped into Elsie's world: the warmth, attention, privileges, and freedom to move and decide. She felt the thrill of living as her twin, of speaking and laughing as Elsie would, of tasting life unbound.

Elsie, meanwhile, adapted to May's structured world, learning patience, discipline, and diplomacy. Every step, every glance, every gesture was a silent acknowledgment of trust, of shared rebellion, of responsibility.

The thrill came from their identical appearances, which made the switch seamless. To the outside world, they were the same, but internally, the experience was profoundly different for each.

Freedom came at a price. May's life became consumed by duty, expectation, and sacrifice. She gave up birthdays, friendships, and the small joys of choice so that Elsie could thrive. Elsie blossomed, radiant and unburdened, while May's shadowed life ensured her sister's safety and liberty.

Years later, May still carried the weight of that choice. Every decision, every sacrifice, had been deliberate and she would never regret it.

No one knew the full truth. Not Kendrick. Not Joan. Not Elsie's friends. May's presence was invisible, a shadow ensuring continuity and protection, often at the expense of her own desires.

And now, watching from a distance as Elsie navigated life with Kendrick, May knew the pact was more than a childhood promise. It was a living agreement, a responsibility, and the only thing keeping her twin truly safe.

She allowed herself a faint smile. When the time came for her to intervene, she would step forward, quietly, deliberately, and in the name of the pact.
