Chapter 96 - Chapter 92 : A Different Dimension of Power

The moment the blades were drawn, a tidal wave of pressure erupted from Haruki Aizawa. Kirin Toudou felt a chill race down her spine, her hands trembling as she faced a presence that felt less like a student and more like a looming, jagged mountain of steel.

Among the hundreds of onlookers, only Kirin—a fellow traveler of the blade—could see the sheer weight of the intent Haruki was projecting. It was a rhythmic, pulsing hunger for perfection that made the air feel heavy.

Haruki hadn't been wrong about her.

Despite her fragile appearance and her crippling lack of self-confidence, Kirin possessed a pride that was absolute when it came to the sword. She had never believed she could lose to anyone in a contest of pure skill.

But as she looked at Haruki, witnessing even the small fragment of "Sword Intent" he allowed to leak out, a realization struck her like a physical blow.

I might actually lose.

Strangely, the thought didn't terrify her. Instead, her expression brightened, becoming more focused and alive than it had been all day. She realized Haruki hadn't been lying. He hadn't challenged her for politics or family drama; he was a seeker of the peak, and he truly, desperately wanted to test his edge against hers.

"I understand, Aizawa-san... no, Haruki-senpai!" Kirin shifted her tone, acknowledging him not as a stranger, but as a senior on the path. "I will give you everything I am. I will show you the full depth of the Toudou Style!"

She reached for the blade at her waist—the family heirloom, Senba-kiri (The Thousand-Feather Slasher). As the steel cleared the scabbard, it shimmered with a lethal, silver radiance.

"I am Kirin Toudou of the Toudou Style. Witness my family's blade! Please... guide me, Senpai!"

Haruki adjusted his stance, his eyes narrowing. "I am Haruki Aizawa. A wanderer of the blade. Kirin Toudou... let us see who stands at the end of this path."

The words fell like heavy stones. For a heartbeat, the arena was silent. Then, they moved.

CRACK!

The crowd let out a collective gasp. To the average student, Haruki and Kirin simply vanished. Their physical forms were lost to the human eye, replaced by a storm of silver sparks and the rhythmic, high-pitched scream of clashing steel.

Chapter 154: The Toudou-ryu Swordsmanship

SHING!

Blinding light flashed across the arena floor as the two fighters met in the center.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

The exchange was so rapid that the audience couldn't even track the individual strikes. They could only see the afterimages of the blades, weaving a web of light in the center of the ring.

"What... what's happening?!"

"I can't see them! They're moving too fast!"

"Is this really a student duel? They haven't even activated their Luxes!"

The Seidokan students were in a state of chaotic disbelief. In a world where battles were usually defined by the flashy energy of a Lux or the elemental spells of a Strega, this was something ancient and raw. This was a duel of pure kinetics and spirit.

While the audience was confused, Haruki and Kirin were both reeling from the other's strength.

For Kirin, this was a shock to her system. She had never met anyone who could not only keep up with her speed but actively suppress her. Since she had first gripped a wooden sword, her talent had been an unstoppable force. She had crushed her seniors at the family dojo, defeated masters twice her age, and climbed to the Rank 1 spot at Seidokan by dismantled every "Elite" that stood in her way.

She had begun to believe she was reaching the ceiling of what was possible.

But every time her blade met Haruki's, she felt her confidence being ground down. His style was a challenge to her very understanding of swordsmanship. He was teaching her, through the weight of his strikes, that she was still a big fish in a very small pond.

Haruki, meanwhile, was genuinely impressed. Kirin wasn't just fast; her foundations were like bedrock. Her movements were clean, devoid of the "noise" he usually felt from other fighters. If she were a few years older, she would be a match for some of the legendary Blazers he had faced in his first mission world.

What made her truly dangerous, however, was her Star Pulse. Unlike the previous world's low-tier fighters, Kirin had a massive pool of energy that she was using with surgical precision to reinforce her movements.

But Haruki was no longer the man who had struggled against Ikki Kurogane. He had evolved.

Kirin realized she couldn't break his guard with conventional strikes. As Haruki's pressure mounted, pushing her toward the edge of the arena, she finally decided to shift her cadence.

The silver-haired girl changed her grip. Her rhythm, which had been a steady, lethal flow, suddenly warped into something unpredictable and fluid.

She lunged. The blade whistled toward Haruki's chest, but as he moved to parry, the sword seemed to dissolve and reappear from a different angle, aiming for his throat.

Puchi!

Haruki pivoted, the blade missing him by a hair's breadth. He went to counter-attack, but the trajectory of Kirin's sword changed again mid-swing, tracing a perfect arc in the air to target his wrist.

If it hit, he would lose his grip.

Haruki didn't hesitate. He flared Highland Soul, his speed doubling instantly as he leaped back to reset the distance. He stared at her, his eyes glowing with interest.

"That was... Toudou-ryu?"

"Yes," Kirin nodded, her breathing becoming steady and deep. "The secret of my style."

She gathered her Star Pulse, focusing it into her legs. She dropped into a high-stance, her aura expanding until it filled the arena.

"Haruki-senpai, I see you aren't using a Lux, and you aren't using Star Pulse like a normal student. But if I don't go all out, I'll never reach you. So... I'm going to use my everything!"

BOOM!

Kirin became a streak of silver lightning. With her Star Pulse fully unleashed, her speed rivaled Haruki's Highland Soul. She unleashed a flurry of strikes that felt less like sword swings and more like the flowing of water.

No matter how Haruki blocked or parried, her blade would snap back into a new orbit, relentlessly hunting for the weak points in his armor—his wrists, his neck, his joints. Every movement she made was perfectly synchronized, her style breathing with a rhythm he couldn't quite pin down.

Haruki was being driven back. The audience roared as the "Sword Ghost" was pushed toward the ring's boundary. One step outside would mean defeat.

Just as the back of Haruki's boot touched the line, he stopped.

"Ngh!"

Kirin blinked. Haruki's movement had frozen, and then, with a motion that defied gravity, his blade lashed out in a pattern that looked hauntingly familiar.

CLANG!

Blades met, but this time, the recoil sent Kirin stumbling back. She quickly corrected her path, preparing to launch her next chain of attacks.

But Haruki mirrored her. He stepped forward with the exact same footwork, his blade tracing the exact same arc she had used seconds before.

"Impossible..." Kirin gasped, her eyes widening. "Senpai... are you using my Linked Cranes?!"

"Senpai... you learned the Linked Cranes?"

Kirin stared at Haruki in utter disbelief. The technique he had just used against her was the crown jewel of the Toudou Style.

The Toudou-ryu was built around the philosophy of the "Senbazuru"—the folding of a thousand paper cranes. It was a style of rapid-fire, continuous redirection. Each strike was designed to lead into the next with mathematical precision, keeping the enemy in a state of constant defensive collapse.

The ultimate technique, Renka (Linked Cranes), required a level of sensory perception and physical coordination that took decades to master. It consisted of forty-nine distinct "Forms"—patterns like Cradle, Nest, Horizon, and Shattered Wing—that could be chained together based on the opponent's reaction.

Kirin was a once-in-a-century genius who had mastered all forty-nine forms after years of grueling training. No one in her family's history had done it so young.

And yet, Haruki Aizawa had just replicated one of the chains perfectly after seeing it once.

"It's an efficient system," Haruki noted, his voice calm. "Using the opponent's momentum to reset the pivot point of the blade... it's elegant."

"But... you can't just copy it! There are forty-nine forms! You only saw three!"

Kirin's shock was turning into a desperate focus. She realized that if she didn't end this now, Haruki would continue to "download" her family's secrets mid-duel. She couldn't allow that.

She tightened her grip on Senba-kiri. She flared her Star Pulse to its limit, the silver energy forming a vortex around her small frame. She blurred forward, her blade becoming a shimmering curtain of steel as she unleashed a full chain of the Linked Cranes.

CLANG! CLINK! CLANG!

Blades collided in a staccato rhythm. Kirin was moving with everything she had, cycling through the forms with a speed that would have shredded any other ranker.

But as the battle progressed, her eyes filled with a new kind of terror.

Every time she pivoted, Haruki was already there. Every time she changed the angle of her strike, he parried it with a smirk. And most horrifyingly, he started to "complete" her sentences. If she used Form 12, he countered with the perfect anti-thesis, then immediately flowed into Form 13 before she could even think of it.

He wasn't just copying her. He was perfecting her style.

CLANG!

A massive impact sent Kirin's sword flying from her hands. She stood frozen as the tip of Haruki's blade came to rest an inch from her throat.

The arena went silent. The "invincible" Rank 1 had been dismantled.

"Your technique is perfect, Kirin," Haruki said, his voice carrying through the quiet hall. "But your soul is divided. You use the Toudou Style, but you're still a servant to your uncle's expectations. Until you swing that sword for yourself, you'll never be able to beat a man who has mastered his own destiny."

Haruki sheathed his blade.

"The duel is over. And remember... the bet is still on."
