Chapter 2 - Princess

"Wha-What do you mean?" Sara said in a serious tone with tears blurring her vision.

"My brother's will?..... DON'T SPEAK BULLSHIT!"

Sara was shocked. Not because her brother was dead. Sara already knew that. But because he had a final will.

Sara was just three when her parents passed away in an accident. From then on, her twelve-year-old brother Sam, had taken care of her. Just at the age of twelve, he had started working at three jobs in a day which after a few years had become five. Sam was Sara's whole world. Then one day, that world was taken away from her. Sam never told Sara about his cancer, because he thought that would worry her, what he didn't realise was losing him suddenly would hurt her way more than knowing that he was about to die.

"Listen, you have to tru-" the woman said, slowly getting closer to Sara to comfort her.

"NO I WON'T!" Sara interfered mid-sentence.

"LIKE...WHY SHOULD I?" Sara's voice cracked.

The woman opened her mouth to say something but was immediately interrupted by Sara.

"You turned me into....some kind of monster, and then say my brother asked you to?....And then you ask me to believe in this bullshit?" Sara said aggressively, her voice was shaking.

The woman let out a long breath, "I knew you'd react like this," the woman said while searching the pockets of her jacket, " That's why, I brought this." She took out a folded piece of paper from the right pocket of her jacket and handed it over to Sara.

Sara carefully took the paper, " What is this?" Sara said with a confused expression.

" Your brother wrote this...….he asked me to give this to you, when I met you"

Sara's breath hitched, but she still couldn't trust the woman's words, " Why should I believe you?"

"Um…I don't know?...Your brother said you will after reading this"

Sara swallowed, with her hands shaking, she carefully opened the paper and started reading it.

'Hey Princess,

If you're reading this, then it means I couldn't keep my promise.

I'm sorry.

I know you're probably angry. Confused. Maybe even scared. And you have every right to be. I wanted to be there longer. I really did. I wanted to see you grow up properly. I wanted to see you become stronger than me. Smarter than me. Happier than me.

But I was never as strong as you thought I was.

You know, when mom and dad left us, I was really scared.

I didn't know how to cook properly. I didn't know how to work. I didn't know how to be an adult. I was just a kid pretending to be brave.

But every time you smiled at me… it made me feel like I was doing something right.

You never complained.

Even when my cooking didn't taste good.

Even when you had to wear old clothes.

Even when life wasn't fair to you.

You still smiled.

You saved me more times than I ever saved you.

That's why… When I was given a choice, it wasn't difficult.

I was given a chance to live.

But I wanted that chance to be yours.

And that was enough.

You might hate me for deciding this without asking you. And I understand that. But I want you to live. Not just survive. Live. See the world. Make friends. Laugh properly. Do all the things you couldn't because of me.

And most importantly…

Find someone who loves you as much as I did.

Or more.

Don't stay alone.

You were never meant to be alone.

And Sara…

I was never unhappy.

Because I had you.

Thank you for being my little sister.

— Sam'

Sara's hands were shaking, drops of tears were falling continuously on the letter.

"Th-that handwriting, the way he called me 'Princess'...…it was....it was him, it really was him!"

Sara took the letter into both of her shaking arms and hugged it tightly against her chest, like the letter would disappear if she didn't.

"You idiot.... Your cooking tasted good..... It always did" Sara said while sobbing silently, her voice shaking and cracking.

"You know….." the woman said, wiping tiny drops of tears from her eyes, "When we offered Sam a chance to become an inhuman.... he didn't even hesitate to pass it over to you"

"Even though....even though he knew that it could cure his cancer"

Sara's sobbing had now become loud cries.

"All he wanted was..." the woman's voice was shaking "to make sure that you're not left alone"

"But why not both of us?" Sara said while crying

"Our rules," the woman said quietly, "Only one of you could be saved ."

"That idiot...why didn't he tell me about this?" Sara said, still hugging the letter.

"WHY?.....WHY DID HE LEAVE ME LIKE THIS?"

Sara cried, she cried her whole heart out. Her brother didn't just leave her. He chose her. He chose her life over his own.

Minutes passed. Sara didn't know how long she cried. Eventually she stopped crying, but was still tightly hugging the letter. The woman was still sitting in front of her waiting for the right moment to say something, but before she could, Sara did.

"You never told me how I ended up here."

"Uh... yeah I'm sorry, it's…..uh….. nevermind….. is actually a procedure for every new inhuman"

"A procedure?"

"The first transformation of every inhuman makes them go like crazy so….. you just like, completely wrecked your house"

"I see," Sara said with an understanding expression.

"So I just had to hit you on the head to knock you down"

"That explains the pain on the back of my head."

"Oh I'm really sorry. Does it like, hurt really bad?"

"No it's not that bad," Sara said with a faint smile, " In fact, I guess I should thank you!"

"Oh please, I'm the one who almost broke your skull," the woman said with a relaxed smile.

Sara then looked right at the woman and said, "I-I never asked your name"

The woman smiled at Sara and said, "Just call me Sally"

Sally then stood up, took a notepad and a pencil out of her jacket's inner pocket and said, " Come on, now show me what you've got".
