"Finally, that old bastard's out of the way."
Tsunade reclined on her cot, a satisfied smile playing across her lips as she surveyed her domain—the command tent of The Hidden Leaf forces. The jonin vote had gone exactly as planned.
Hanekawa settled across from her, arms folded. "Shame we couldn't strip Orochimaru of his commander position too."
"Don't get greedy." Tsunade's eyes glinted with amusement. "Removing Danzo through proper channels was already a miracle. The jonin voted, the law was followed—even Hiruzen can't complain." She stretched, clearly relishing her newfound authority. "Besides, Orochimaru's neutered now. He can't do much without Danzo backing him."
She's not wrong, Hanekawa thought. But Danzo won't just accept this quietly.
"Your feet must be killing you after that meeting," he said, standing. "Let me help."
Tsunade raised an eyebrow. "You're not fooling anyone with that innocent act."
"I have no idea what you mean, Teacher." Hanekawa kept his expression perfectly serious as he moved closer. Without waiting for permission, he gently lifted her feet onto his lap and began working his thumbs into her soles.
Tsunade stiffened, glared at him, then simply lay back with a satisfied grunt.
Excellent.
As his hands worked, Hanekawa's mind was already three moves ahead. "We need to watch Danzo carefully. He won't accept this defeat."
"Root has eight operatives he can still mobilize," Tsunade said, her eyes half-closed. "Make sure you and Rin keep tabs on them."
"What about Orochimaru?"
"Don't worry about him." Tsunade's voice turned cold. "Nothing he does will escape my notice now."
Hanekawa pressed his thumb into her arch, and her toes curled involuntarily. "They might try something desperate. Colluding with the Hidden Cloud, maybe?"
Tsunade's eyes snapped open. "If Danzo dares to sell out to another village..." She didn't finish the sentence. She didn't need to. Treason was the one crime even Hiruzen couldn't overlook—the jonin would demand blood.
"It's possible," Hanekawa said carefully. "Danzo's pragmatic. If he thinks he's losing, he might burn everything down rather than let you win."
Tsunade was quiet for a moment, her expression darkening. "Then we'll have to be ready."
Hanekawa continued massaging, his mind working through scenarios. If Danzo contacts the Hidden Cloud, he'll be careful. He won't go himself—he'll send Root operatives. And he'll make sure they can deny everything if caught.
"The most likely play," Hanekawa said slowly, "is they let us fight the Hidden Cloud to exhaustion, then move in to finish us both off. Danzo becomes the hero who saved the village."
"Clever bastard," Tsunade muttered. "But not clever enough."
"We'll know soon enough," Hanekawa said with confidence he didn't entirely feel. Lightning Style Chakra Mode, Shisui's Mangekyō Sharingan—those are my aces. They'll have to be enough.
Tsunade's breathing gradually deepened. Within minutes, she was asleep, her face relaxed in a way it rarely was when awake. Hanekawa carefully set her feet down and lay beside her, studying her features in the lamplight.
She's carrying too much weight, he thought. And I'm about to make it worse.
He closed his eyes, but sleep didn't come easily.
---
A noise outside the tent jolted him awake. Hanekawa's eyes snapped open to find Tsunade's face inches from his own, their hands somehow intertwined.
"Wake up when someone's at the door," Tsunade said flatly, pulling her hand back. She sat up without another word, smoothing her hair as if nothing had happened.
Hanekawa smiled despite himself and went to open the tent flap.
Nohara Rin stood outside, her expression urgent. "Four Root operatives left the base camp an hour ago. They're moving north, away from the village."
Tsunade was on her feet instantly. "That old fool. He's actually doing it."
"I'll follow them," Hanekawa said. "See where they're headed."
Tsunade nodded sharply. "Be careful. If they're meeting the Hidden Cloud, their perception will be sharp."
Hanekawa used Body Flicker to close the distance quickly. The four Root ninjas moved with military precision, disguised as a patrol unit. Smart, he thought. If they're captured, Danzo can claim they were just doing routine reconnaissance.
He followed at a distance, watching as they made contact with Hidden Cloud scouts near the border. The exchange was brief—information for safe passage. Within minutes, the Root operatives were being escorted toward the Hidden Cloud headquarters.
He's sacrificing them, Hanekawa realized. They'll be tortured, they'll break, and they'll reveal everything about Tsunade's power grab. Danzo gets plausible deniability, and the Hidden Cloud gets intelligence.
It was ruthless and effective. Hanekawa turned back toward camp, his mind already working through countermeasures.
---
"That treacherous bastard!" Tsunade's fist cracked against the tent pole, leaving a spiderweb of cracks. "I actually thought—no. I knew better than to trust him."
"He's already exposed himself," Hanekawa said calmly, taking her hand. "The Hidden Cloud will verify the information. When they do, they'll move against us. And when they do, we'll be ready."
Tsunade's grip tightened on his hand. "If we lose—"
"We won't." Hanekawa met her eyes. "Trust me."
She studied him for a long moment, then nodded. "I do."

Hidden Cloud Headquarters
"The four Konoha operatives are Shimura Danzo's men," Dodai reported, his voice steady. "They want to cooperate with us."
The Fourth Raikage leaned forward. "Cooperate? Why would a Konoha official contact us?"
"Tsunade seized power," Dodai explained, laying out the details of the jonin vote. "Danzo was removed. He's offering us a chance to exploit the chaos."
"This is fortune!" Killer Bee exclaimed. "The Hidden Leaf tears itself apart while we strike!"
"Is it credible?" Samui asked quietly.
Mabui tapped her fingers together thoughtfully. "We have confirmation that Hanekawa reported Danzo's suppression of information before. The power struggle is consistent with Tsunade's personality. It's plausible."
"Danzo wants us to draw Tsunade out," Dodai continued. "He and Orochimaru will remain neutral. Once we've weakened her, they'll move."
The Fourth Raikage's expression hardened. "And Hanekawa? What's his role in this?"
"That's the question," Mabui said carefully. "If he's truly suppressed, he couldn't provide intelligence. But if he's still silent now..." She let the implication hang.
"He's betrayed us," Samui said quietly.
"We'll test the information first," Mabui decided. "Lord Raikage, attack their northern stronghold as planned. If Tsunade responds personally, we know the intelligence is genuine. And we can contact Hanekawa directly—give him an ultimatum."
The Fourth Raikage nodded grimly. "If he refuses to cooperate, he's made his choice."
---
The next morning, before breakfast could be served, a messenger arrived with urgent news.
"The Fourth Raikage has captured the northern stronghold," Orochimaru announced, his tone carefully neutral. "Three hundred troops. They're moving fast."
Tsunade's jaw tightened. Faster than expected.
"Take your forces and retake it," Orochimaru instructed. "Time is critical."
"Understood." Tsunade was already moving, her mind shifting into battle mode.
Hanekawa followed, already calculating distances and timelines. Ten minutes to the stronghold. Three hundred Hidden Cloud troops. This isn't a trap—it's a probe. They're testing whether Tsunade really has taken control.
The march north was swift and silent. When they arrived, the smell of blood was unmistakable. The stronghold had been thoroughly secured, its defenses reinforced with earth techniques.
"Four Cloud ninjas hiding in the perimeter," Hyuga Hizashi reported, his Byakugan piercing the darkness. "Chunin-level, positioned for early warning."
"Eliminate them quietly," Tsunade ordered.
Hanekawa was moving before she finished speaking. Body Flicker took him directly to the nearest Cloud ninja. Before the man could even register the threat, Hanekawa's hand covered his mouth and the Thunder Fire Sword flashed. The ninja dropped without a sound.
Three more kills followed in quick succession. When Hanekawa returned, the others were already in position.
"I'll use Hidden Mist," Hanekawa said. "When the fog's thick enough, everyone unleash everything. Just avoid wind techniques—they'll clear the mist too quickly."
Tsunade nodded approvingly.
Hanekawa's hands flew through the seals. Water Style: Hidden Mist Technique.
Thick fog erupted from his mouth, rolling across the stronghold like a living thing. Within seconds, visibility dropped to nothing.
"What's happening?" a Cloud ninja shouted from the gate.
He never got an answer.
Fireballs, lightning bolts, water dragons, and earth spikes erupted from the mist simultaneously. The Hidden Cloud ninjas didn't even have time to form a coherent defense. The stronghold's gate exploded inward under the barrage.
Tsunade was the first through, her fists leading the way.
Here we go, Hanekawa thought, following her into the chaos. The real war starts now.
