The chakra flowed smoothly through Hanekawa's body as Tsunade worked, her hands glowing with healing green light. After a thorough examination, she exhaled in relief.
Just as he'd said—pure chakra exhaustion. No injuries from the battle itself.
But that didn't mean there was no danger.
Chakra was a delicate balance of physical and spiritual energy. Deplete it too far, and you risked complete physical and mental collapse. Push it to absolute zero, and death was almost certain.
Hanekawa hadn't reached that point. Yet.
Tsunade's body suddenly tensed. She glanced down.
Hanekawa had pressed his face against her chest, his breathing warm against her skin. The sensation sent an unexpected flutter through her.
Dangerous, she thought distantly. This is getting dangerous.
But she didn't pull away.
---
The Konoha headquarters buzzed with controlled chaos. Tsunade moved through the camp with purpose, leaving Hanekawa to rest in her tent. She found Minato and Shiwei waiting for her.
"Is he alright?" Minato asked immediately, his concern genuine.
"Fine. Just exhausted." Tsunade allowed herself a small smile. "He captured Roshi alive without a scratch. Remarkable."
Minato exchanged a glance with Shiwei. "We're all impressed. That kind of feat—"
"No need for speeches," Tsunade cut him off, though her tone was light. "We have work to finish. Drive the Hidden Stone forces completely out of the Land of Grass. Now."
---
Hours later, Hanekawa's eyes opened to find Kurenai sitting vigil beside him, chin propped on her hands, watching him with an intensity that would have been unsettling if it weren't so earnest.
"How do you feel?" she asked, moving closer.
"Better." He sat up slowly, taking in her relieved expression. "What happened with Obito?"
Kurenai's face fell slightly. "Still missing. They think the Hidden Stone captured him."
They're wrong, Hanekawa thought. Madara has him. Probably explaining Eye of the Moon right now.
The butterfly effect of his timeline was becoming clearer. Without Rin as Kakashi's teammate, there was no eye transplant surgery. He glanced toward where Kakashi was resting and confirmed it—both eyes were normal. No Sharingan.
A mixed blessing. Kakashi would develop differently now. Stronger in his base state, but without the Mangekyō's power, he'd struggle in the final war.
"We'll get him back," Hanekawa said with confidence he didn't entirely feel. "Tsunade will negotiate his release."
Kurenai nodded, wanting to believe it.
Then a new notification appeared in his vision:
---
[A-Rank Talent Entry: Flower-Fruit Mountain]
[Trigger Condition: Defeat the Four-Tails Jinchuriki, Roshi]
[Effect: Automatically comprehend Lava Release]
[Note: Cannot be synthesized]
---
Oh, that's broken, Hanekawa thought, suppressing his grin.
Lava Release—a kekkei genkai combining fire and earth attributes. Roshi had demonstrated its devastating power firsthand. Now Hanekawa could use it too.
The practical applications were immediate. Konoha didn't have Lava Release jutsu in its archives, but the Hidden Stone certainly did. He could claim he'd developed it through inspiration from the battle, combining his existing fire and earth mastery. No one would question a genius finding new applications.
Better yet, this opened a pattern. If he could extract Lava Release from Roshi, what about the other tailed beasts? The One-Tail's Magnetic Release, the Five-Tail's Boil Release...
Too far ahead, he reminded himself. Focus on what's possible now.
He had the water bonuses from his entries. Fire, Lightning, Earth, and Wind were still standard-level. Defeating other jinchuriki would require either new entries or significant preparation.
Though... the Two-Tails used Fire Style. If he encountered Yugito Nii in the Hidden Cloud campaign, he could potentially—
"Hanekawa?" Kurenai waved a hand in front of his face. "You're spacing out."
"Just thinking." He smiled at her. "Come on. Let's check on the others."
---
When they found Kakashi, Rin, and Guy, the mood was subdued. Rin's eyes were red from crying, though she'd composed herself. Kakashi looked grim, his normal eyes—still a shock to see—hard with determination.
"Obito will come back," Hanekawa said simply. "We have leverage now."
"How?" Kakashi's voice was sharp. "The Hidden Stone has him."
"Because I captured their jinchuriki alive." Hanekawa let that sink in. "That's worth negotiating for."
Guy's expression brightened immediately. "That's the spirit! The flames of youth burn bright in you, Hanekawa!"
Kakashi's shoulders relaxed slightly. It wasn't a guarantee, but it was hope.
---
Later, alone with Kurenai in Tsunade's tent, Hanekawa found her watching him again with that intense focus.
"What?" he asked, amused.
"Just... making sure you're really okay." She reached out and touched his shoulder, as if confirming he was solid. "You scared us."
"I'm fine." He took her hand. "And I promised you food when we get home, remember?"
Her face brightened immediately. "You did! I want everything you make!"
At least someone's easy to please, he thought, ruffling her hair despite her mock protests.
Outside, the war continued. But for now, in this small tent, there was peace.
And new power waiting to be mastered.
