Chapter 150 - A Spy Who Got a System

The Land of Snow's perpetual snow had finally broken. For the first time in weeks, sunlight warmed the camp, and with it came a fragile sense of relief.

"This is amazing!" Kurenai spun in a slow circle, her red eyes bright with genuine joy. The weight of a month-long campaign seemed to lift from her shoulders, if only for a moment.

Rin nodded, smiling softly. "It's nice to have a break."

"I hope the Hidden Cloud stays quiet for a few days," Kurenai said, clenching her fist. A month of skirmishes had left her with a deep distaste for their opponents. "I'm so tired of fighting them."

Hanekawa sat cross-legged on the ground, carefully arranging small instruments and vials. His hands moved with practiced precision—the work of a poisoner, not a child.

"Making more toxins?" Rin asked, watching him work.

"The last batch went to Kakashi and the others," Hanekawa replied without looking up. "The Hidden Cloud's medical corps has been rotating through here constantly. They're desperate to counter the poison."

Kurenai laughed despite herself. "It's like you and Chiyo during the Second War—except you're the one doing the poisoning."

"Not quite," Hanekawa said, but he didn't deny the comparison.

The truth was, this extended campaign had accelerated his growth in ways he hadn't anticipated. High-intensity combat meant rapid skill development. His Water Style proficiency was nearly ready to break into B-rank territory—what should have taken two months was happening in half that time.

"I don't know when we'll get back to the village," Kurenai sighed, the momentary joy fading.

"Soon," Hanekawa said, reaching out to ruffle her hair.

She dodged with practiced ease. "Your hands are covered in poison! What if I lose my hair?"

"It doesn't work that way," he said, amused.

"Then let Rin try it," he suggested.

Kurenai's eyes widened. "What did you just say?"

"I... I don't mind," Rin said quietly, her voice barely audible.

Hanekawa froze. That wasn't the response he'd expected.

Kurenai stared at Rin in disbelief, her mouth opening and closing. Something felt off, but she couldn't quite place it.

Hanekawa carefully touched Rin's head, keeping his expression neutral. "See? No problem."

Before Kurenai could respond, a voice cut through the moment.

"What are you doing?"

Obito stood at the edge of the camp, his expression dark. He'd clearly seen the tail end of the interaction—Hanekawa's hand on Rin's head.

"We're back!" Guy announced cheerfully, oblivious to the tension. Kakashi appeared beside him, his visible eye narrowing slightly as he took in the scene.

"We were discussing poison," Hanekawa said smoothly, meeting Obito's gaze without flinching. "Rin was curious about the effects."

"Is that true, Rin?" Obito's jaw clenched.

"Yes," Rin confirmed, her cheeks flushed. "Hanekawa was just explaining—"

"It's poison," Kurenai interjected, recounting what had happened. Her tone was matter-of-fact, though she still seemed puzzled by something she couldn't quite articulate.

Obito's shoulders relaxed slightly, though his hands remained fisted. Her face is red from the poison, not from... not from anything else.

"How are your parents?" Rin asked, deliberately changing the subject.

"They're well," Obito said, his voice brightening. "They asked me to take care of you."

"Thank you," Rin said gently.

"No need!" Obito scratched his head, his earlier tension melting away. "We're a team. That's what teammates do."

Kurenai turned to Kakashi. "Did you deliver that letter to my father?"

Kakashi produced an envelope. "From Uncle Shinku. Minato brought it back using Flying Thunder God."

"Thank you!" Kurenai tore it open eagerly.

"Anything significant happen in the village?" Hanekawa asked as they settled around the fire.

"Nothing major," Guy said.

"Actually, yes," Kakashi corrected. "Graduation season at the Academy. Orochimaru took a student."

Guy snapped his fingers. "Right! That's what I was trying to remember!"

"Orochimaru?" Kurenai's curiosity was piqued. "The same Orochimaru as the Legendary Sannin? Who did he take?"

"Mitarashi Anko," Kakashi supplied.

"I think I know her," Kurenai said thoughtfully. "So another genius enters the world?"

"There aren't that many geniuses," Obito said with a snort. "We're just lucky."

Hanekawa said nothing, but he suspected Orochimaru's choice had been more pragmatic than selective. Anko wasn't a prodigy—she had her limits. But she'd been fortunate enough to avoid becoming one of his experiments, at least for now.

"Hanekawa, meeting," Tsunade's voice carried across the camp.

He stood, securing his instruments. "I'll catch up with you all later."

The main tent was filled with jonin, all of whom greeted him respectfully. A month ago, he'd been ignored. Now, they sought his favor. His medical skills and combat prowess had earned their respect—a far cry from the skepticism of a child prodigy.

Tsunade waited until everyone had assembled before nodding to Minato.

"The Third Raikage attacked the Hidden Sand," Minato began without preamble. "He killed Bunpuku and severely wounded Rasa. Chiyo and the One-Tail jinchuriki managed to drive him back, but he escaped."

The tent erupted in shocked murmurs.

Hanekawa's mind raced. The Third Raikage is reckless enough to do something like that. In the original timeline, it took ten thousand Iwagakure ninja to exhaust him to death. Here, with fewer constraints and more freedom of action, he was still a force of nature.

"Just the six of them?" Tsunade's eyes narrowed. "Surely the Hidden Cloud prepared a larger force."

"They did," Minato said. "One thousand ninja, moving through the Land of Rain. They were ambushed by our forces and completely eliminated."

The tent fell silent. Then excitement rippled through the gathered jonin.

"How did Lord Third detect them?" Tsunade asked sharply.

"Through the Akatsuki," Minato replied. "Your foresight regarding that organization has proven invaluable."

Tsunade's gaze shifted to Hanekawa, understanding dawning. This chain reaction—the Hidden Cloud's defeat, the Hidden Sand's survival, the shifting balance of power—all traced back to his warning about Akatsuki.

Hanekawa kept his expression neutral, though internally he was processing the implications. The Hidden Cloud's only viable route to the Hidden Sand ran through the Land of Rain. With Nagato's sensory abilities and Akatsuki's alliance with Konoha, they'd been caught in a perfect trap.

"The Hidden Sand?" Tsunade pressed.

"Chiyo has unified them through shared hatred," Minato explained. "They've declared war on the Hidden Cloud, blaming them for the Third Kazekage's disappearance. No immediate action, but the declaration stands."

"They'll fight," Tsunade said grimly. "And the Hidden Cloud will be caught between two fronts. Increase patrols. Watch for any movement through this region."

"Yes, ma'am," the jonin responded in unison.

Three days later, Hanekawa was pulled from a rare day of rest.

"Five outposts attacked simultaneously this morning," Tsunade said, her expression grave. "All by Hidden Cloud forces. We're heading north to reinforce."

Kurenai and Rin exchanged worried glances. A month of skirmishes was one thing. An all-out war would be something else entirely.

"Is this it?" Hanekawa asked. "Full mobilization?"

"Unknown," Tsunade said. "Minato's investigating whether the Hidden Cloud has received reinforcements. If they're committing to war, they'll need more than what they've already deployed."

They moved quickly, covering the distance in half an hour.

"Still fighting," Hanekawa reported, his senses extended. "Twelve Cloud ninja at the outpost."

Tsunade didn't hesitate. She accelerated, closing the distance in seconds.

"Enemy incoming!" a Cloud jonin shouted.

But Tsunade was already among them.

Strange Power.

Her chakra detonated outward. The ground fractured, trees splintered, debris scattered like leaves. Screams cut through the chaos.

The real war had begun.
