Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: A New Beginning

The morning of the results arrived faster than Mira expected.

She barely slept the night before. Every time she closed her eyes, she imagined different outcomes. Sometimes she saw her name on the list. Sometimes she didn't.

When her alarm rang, she was already awake.

She took a deep breath and got out of bed.

"Whatever happens," she whispered to herself, "I'll be okay."

She wasn't completely sure she believed it.

But she wanted to.

The school campus was crowded.

Students gathered in small groups, some talking loudly to hide their nervousness. Others stood quietly with their phones in their hands.

Mira spotted Adrian near the entrance.

"You look like you haven't slept," he said with a nervous smile.

"I haven't."

He laughed.

"Same."

They walked toward the bulletin board together.

With every step, Mira felt her heartbeat grow faster.

A teacher taped the final sheet to the board.

The crowd rushed forward.

For a moment, all Mira could see were shoulders and backpacks.

Then the students slowly moved aside.

She stepped closer.

Her eyes searched the list.

Line after line.

Name after name.

Then—

Alvarez, Mira.

She stopped breathing for a second.

She read it again.

And again.

She had passed.

A small smile appeared on her face before tears slowly filled her eyes.

Not because she was sad.

Because she had worked so hard for this moment.

"You made it!" Adrian shouted from beside her.

He pointed at another name.

"So did I!"

They both laughed in relief.

Without thinking, they gave each other a quick high-five.

"We're really going to college," Adrian said.

Mira nodded.

"We are."

She hurried home with the results folded carefully inside her bag.

Her mother was arranging goods in the sari-sari store when Mira arrived.

"Ma..."

Her mother looked up immediately.

"Well?"

Instead of answering, Mira handed her the paper.

Her mother read it silently.

A few seconds later, she smiled.

Then she hugged Mira tightly.

"I'm so proud of you."

Those simple words meant more than any award.

"We'll find a way," her mother whispered.

"I know college won't be easy, but we'll find a way."

Mira hugged her back.

"We will."

That evening, her phone buzzed.

It was Eli.

Did the results come out today?

Mira smiled before replying.

Yes.

A few seconds later, another message appeared.

And?

She typed only two words.

I passed.

Almost immediately, her phone rang.

She answered.

"I knew you could do it," Eli said, his voice full of excitement.

"You sounded more confident than I was."

He laughed.

"I've seen how hard you worked."

For a while, they talked about college, new experiences, and their dreams.

It felt easy.

Comfortable.

Like old times.

Before ending the call, Eli became quiet.

"I'm proud of you, Mira."

"Thank you."

"I wish I were there to celebrate."

She looked out the window.

"So do I."

There was a short silence.

"But we'll celebrate someday," he said.

She smiled.

"I'd like that."

The next afternoon, Mira climbed the hill.

The wind greeted her gently as she reached the bench.

The sunset was brighter than usual.

Golden light covered the fields below, making everything look warm and peaceful.

She sat down and took out her sketchbook.

On a blank page, she wrote one sentence.

Today, I proved something to myself.

She looked at the words for a long time.

For years, the hill had been where she came whenever she felt lost.

Now, it was also the place where she celebrated.

The hill had watched her cry.

It had watched her wait.

And now, it watched her grow.

She smiled as the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains.

Life was changing again.

College would bring new people, new challenges, and new dreams.

She didn't know what the future would look like.

She didn't know how often she and Eli would talk.

She didn't know if distance would make them stronger or slowly pull them apart.

There were still many questions.

But for the first time, those questions didn't frighten her.

They excited her.

Because every new chapter meant another chance to learn.

Another chance to become the person she wanted to be.

As the last light faded from the sky, Mira stood from the bench.

She looked at the horizon one last time before walking home.

The road ahead was unfamiliar.

But she was finally ready to take the first step.
