His seat was the same as before—all the way in the back—but now, I was his new deskmate! Once everyone was settled, Ms. Teo started the Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) lesson. I reached up, pulled off my black hair tie, and let my hair fall, knowing I looked better with it down.

Ms. Lee walked by and frowned. 'Don't you know you aren't allowed to have your hair down in school?' she asked. I didn't listen to her, though; I just wanted Silas to like me. Surprisingly, Silas spoke up. 'I have no idea what she's thinking either,' he said to Ms. Lee.

He didn't seem to care how I looked at all, and there I was, making a fool of myself. With a quiet sigh, I pulled my hair back into a ponytail.
