Chapter 42 - The Woman at the Gala

Three weeks after Adrian reclaimed control, the empire glittered again.

The annual Knight Holdings Charity Gala was the ultimate statement.

Power had returned.

Investors smiled.

Board members behaved.

The media praised his "resilient comeback."

But tonight wasn't just about business.

It was symbolic.

Adrian stood beside me at the entrance of the grand ballroom, cameras flashing like lightning.

"You look nervous," he murmured quietly.

"I don't like rooms full of people pretending," I replied.

His lips curved slightly. "You're learning fast."

Crystal chandeliers reflected gold light across polished floors. Laughter echoed. Champagne glasses clinked.

Everything looked perfect.

Too perfect.

Halfway through the evening, as Adrian stepped away to greet international partners, I felt it.

Eyes on me.

Watching.

Measuring.

When I turned

She was standing near the staircase.

Tall.

Composed.

Elegant in a deep emerald gown.

Her gaze locked onto mine with unsettling calm.

Not Victoria.

Not anyone I recognized.

But she looked like she belonged.

She didn't smile.

She assessed.

Then she walked toward me.

Each step slow. Intentional.

When she stopped in front of me, her voice was smooth.

"You must be the reason he changed."

My stomach tightened.

"I'm sorry?"

She tilted her head slightly.

"Adrian doesn't compromise. He doesn't bend. Yet lately… he has."

Her eyes studied my face like she was comparing it to something.

Or someone.

"And you are?" I asked carefully.

Her lips curved faintly.

"Someone from his past."

The air shifted.

Before I could respond, Adrian's voice came from behind me.

"Clara."

Not anger.

Not shock.

Recognition.

I turned to him.

His expression was controlled.

But his eyes—

Not calm.

Not relaxed.

History.

"You shouldn't be here," he said quietly.

She smiled slightly.

"Oh, but I was invited."

Invited?

By who?

"Congratulations on your recovery," Clara said to me, her gaze drifting briefly to my side where the scar still healed beneath fabric.

Cold realization spread through me.

She knew about the shooting.

Which meant she'd been watching longer than I thought.

"I'm glad you survived," she added softly.

The words didn't feel kind.

They felt like a warning.

Adrian stepped slightly closer to me.

Protective.

"Enjoy the gala," he said to Clara in a tone that ended conversations.

But she didn't leave.

She leaned closer just enough so only I could hear.

"You think the war is over."

A pause.

"It hasn't even started."

Then she walked away.

Graceful.

Untouched.

Untouched by chaos.

Untouched by consequence.

I looked at Adrian.

"Who is she?"

He exhaled slowly.

"The one person my father respects more than me."

The music swelled.

Applause erupted for a speech across the room.

But the celebration suddenly felt like a stage.

And we were standing in the spotlight.

Again.

Engagement:

Who do you think Clara is?

A former lover

A strategic business rival

Someone arranged by his father

Something darker connected to his past
