Chapter 34 - The Countermove

The board thought they had won.

By morning, the news was everywhere.

"Adrian Knight Removed as CEO."

Investors were nervous. Shares dipped. Analysts speculated.

Victoria arrived at headquarters glowing like a queen who had just claimed her throne.

But by noon…

Everything changed.

A press conference was announced.

Not by the board.

By Adrian.

I watched the live stream from his penthouse, my hands shaking.

He stood behind a simple podium. No company logo behind him. No board members beside him.

Just him.

Calm. Sharp. Controlled.

"For years," he began, "I built Knight Holdings into a global powerhouse. Yesterday, the board voted me out."

Murmurs filled the room.

He didn't look angry.

He looked prepared.

"Effective immediately, I am activating Clause 47 of the original shareholder agreement."

The reporters froze.

Clause 47?

Even I had never heard of it.

"It grants the founding CEO the right to withdraw his private investments and independent subsidiaries from the parent structure… if removed without proven misconduct."

Gasps.

The screen flashed documents.

Legal proof.

Signatures.

Dates.

Victoria's smile — gone.

"If the board believes they can run this empire without me," Adrian continued, "they are welcome to try."

He stepped back.

"And they will do so without 62% of the company's operational assets."

Silence.

Pure silence.

The stock market ticker at the bottom of the screen began flashing red.

Then green.

Then chaos.

Because what the board didn't understand…

Was that Adrian was never just a CEO.

He was the backbone.

Within an hour:

Three major investors withdrew support from the board.

Two subsidiary CEOs publicly declared loyalty to Adrian.

And the company's internal servers? Temporarily locked under restructuring review.

Victoria stormed into the boardroom.

But this time…

She wasn't in control.

Meanwhile, in the penthouse, Adrian turned off the TV.

"They underestimated me," he said calmly.

I stared at him.

"You planned this?"

"I prepared for it."

There was a difference.

He walked toward me slowly.

"They wanted to humiliate me publicly."

His eyes darkened.

"So I gave them a public lesson."

For the first time since everything began…

I saw the real war beginning.

Not emotional.

Not reactive.

Strategic.

Calculated.

Dangerous.

But then he looked at me.

And the steel in his expression softened.

"They will come after what they can still control."

My heart skipped.

"And what is that?"

His hand brushed gently against mine.

"You."

Outside, phones were ringing nonstop.

Markets unstable.

Board members panicking.

Victoria furious.

But inside that quiet penthouse…

The war had just changed direction.

Because Adrian Knight wasn't dethroned.

He had just stepped back…

To pull the entire chessboard toward him.

Do you think Adrian just made the smartest move yet… or did he start a war he can't control? Comment: SMART or DANGEROUS.
