The Lost Vampire System Chapter 43 - Bounty Hunters
All the way across the island, someone with a pair of light orange wings fell through a green portal. Instead of falling like almost everyone else, he spread his wings and started to fly. The glider icon on his screen disappeared.
CopyLord started to glide around on the right side of the map. He decided to go and collect some gold from dead players and suspected that he'd hear whispers of the location of demonicMadison1, as she had gotten the artifact just before the last one. She had some influence, as people wanted to ask her for tips. Damion could guess that CyberGirl created this event to try and see if CrimsonDawn was going to participate. He opened the bounty board, and hers was highlighted at the top of the main page since she was the game creator.
"Funny," Damion said, closing the screen as he dive-bombed a player and snatched the sword from the player.
He screamed in fright, trying to select another sword from his inventory, but a vine from a nearby tree got to him first. His body was squeezed to death as gold coins and an armor set exploded from his body. Damion smiled as he swooped down, adding it to his vast in-game wealth.
Back on the left side of the map, Jareth and Madison had just reached the town. It seemed to be quiet, but Madison warned him that people liked to sneak attack. They went to the middle of the town and looked up. Every second, there was a green portal opening, and a player would fall out of it.
"How long do these events normally last?" Jareth asked Madison as he swore he saw the tree in the middle of the courtyard move.
"Once the artifact gets claimed," Madison said. "There was one event hosted by the Gwendolyn Frostwood, leader of the Frostwood faction, which was first formed in NYXIS. It lasted two whole months, and that was because the top of the faction were actually guarding the artifact. It was finally claimed by CyberGirl. It was highly suspected that their people were farming the players and collecting the money. I will confirm that they made a lot more money than the artifact was worth. There was another one that lasted three weeks, which was claimed by a player named CopyLord. There were no reports of him ever using the artifact, so he probably sold it for a vault, but that was years ago."
Jareth looked at the tree again in the center area where there was a small tree. The tree was leaning over as a vine grew from its branches, heading in their direction.
"Madison, that tree is—"
He couldn't finish as Madison pulled Jareth aside, swiping at the vine as smoke covered her arm. It cleanly went through, and a few gold coins came out of the destroyed vine. She ran forward, her body completely covered in smoke, as she swiped at the tree, slicing it apart. The tree was destroyed, and around 12 gold coins came out. She absorbed 6 of them.
"Collect some for yourself," Madison said. "You did warn me about the tree."
Jareth collected the rest as they walked down the street. From one of the windows, someone was watching, hoping to sneak attack someone when he noticed the pair.
"Perfect," the man whispered as his eyes began to glow, as his Evolved power was laser vision.
He was about to fire off an attack when his phone vibrated. His eyes dimmed as he checked his NYXIS bounty page. The guy is what you call a NYXIS bounty hunter, a high-risk, high-reward type of guy, so completing bounties was the easiest way to make money. There was a new bounty at the top of his screen, which was CyberGirl's information bounty.
"10,000 gold coins," the guy almost shouted, but he muttered it instead. "High amount for just information. I guess I can keep an eye out."
He closed his screen, and his eyes glowed again, but just before he could shoot out his attack, someone grabbed his head from behind and twisted it. An exaggerated snap was heard as the body exploded, but before any of the gold coins could hit the wall and floor, which would make noise, the person absorbed them into their inventory.
"Easy," a female voice said in a whisper as she looked out of the window. "Is that demonicMadison1? The one who got the artifact the time before the last. Now off just collecting coins for her vault that she probably got, I assume. Now who are y…"
She trailed off as she saw the orange hair.
"It can't be," she muttered as she opened up the bounty board and clicked on CyberGirl's information bounty.
A screen popped up, showing a picture of CrimsonDawn with the orange and dark teal suit along with the orange hair. She compared the one on the bounty to the one who was just walking past the building that she was in.
"I'll be collecting that 10,000 gold coins or dollars, whatever, and waiting for July 1st. I can finally buy a full Advanced tier armor set and replace my Simple tier one. Daddy is going to be so proud."
She typed in the event and the general location. After about a minute, the voice of NYXIS was heard in her head.
"Your information is accurate; 10,000 gold coins have been credited to your inventory. CyberGirl sends her regards."
She smiled as she decided to go and find one of the green portals scattered around the map. If you ever wanted to leave the event before someone claimed the artifact, all you had to do was go through one of the portals. She hopped forward with a spring in her step and slapped the top of the doorway in excitement.
Outside, Jareth snapped his head to the right after he heard the sound. Madison noticed and turned to where he was staring.
"Vampire hearing?" she whispered.
Jareth nodded as the pair headed to the building and opened the door. Standing just behind the girl was another girl wearing what looked like gator skin armor. Her eyes widened—she had been planning to wait until they passed.
Madison smiled and lunged forward, but plant vines shot out from the girl's sleeves, striking toward the Cambion. Madison swiped, but unlike the tree, the one controlling the vines had intelligence. They coiled around her arms, locking her in place.
"Sorry," the girl said, pulling out an energy gun. "My telekinetic power pairs well with my plant control."
She aimed the weapon at Madison, but just before she fired, her eyes flicked left. What she saw looked like a miniature sun hurtling toward her.
She tried to move her vines, but it was too late. The Sun Pulse skill slammed into her, blasting her into the staircase and dragging Madison halfway with her.
"What the heck was that?" the girl yelled as she staggered up. "You just threw a mini sun at me!"
"You said you wanted another?" Jareth replied, already launching a second Sun Pulse straight at her.
"Damn you!" she yelled as she moved her plants to take the attack. The sun connected with the plants, but it only slowed down while burning the vines as she was hit again and pushed into the floor of the staircase.
"Cyber—"
She didn't finish as Madison's smoky fist slammed into her head, knocking her out. Jareth looked at the unconscious girl with confusion.
"You can get knocked out?" Jareth asked.
"Only for three seconds, and it's considered a strong stun attack," she answered the Vampiric.
The female's eyes opened as Madison swiped her claws down on her neck. Her neck opened, and instead of blood coming out, gold coins did instead. She clasped at her neck, but that was her mistake, as the wound seemed to expand and her head slid back as her body exploded, sending out gold coins and pieces of armor everywhere.
Jareth and Madison opened their inventory and started to usher them in. Jareth collected 7,654 gold coins and a Simple Tier chest piece, while Madison collected 7,767 gold coins and the rest of the pieces of the armor.
"Nice," Madison said. "I can add this to my vault. Equip the chest piece. Just grab it and throw it on yourself."
Jareth opened up the armor section, grabbed the digital chest piece, and placed it on. The chest piece surrounded his chest and suit, applied to his body, and vanished.
"What happened?" Jareth asked as he worried that it had disappeared.
"It's meant to just increase whatever it is supposed to increase. Unlike the real world, negative effects like weight or mobility aren't applied. Also, if you're wearing something stylish, it isn't impeded. See, look," she made a swiping motion in the air, which was just Madison flipping a switch on her screen, and a full set of black armor was revealed.
Jareth looked at the simple set of armor with awe.
"It's an in-game Simple high-tier armor set," Madison explained as she rubbed up and down the sides of her body. "I replaced the chest piece with an Advanced low-tier one."
She made a swiping motion in the opposite direction, and her armor disappeared, showing her regular style clothes.
"Let's go find more people," Madison said as they left the house.
