Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The First Traitor

The static from the radio continued to hiss, a dying scream of a civilization that had collapsed in a single night. Zoya stood paralyzed, the leather-bound notebook heavy in her hand. The word 'Betrayal' seemed to glow under the dim emergency lights of the bunker, mocking her loyalty. Outside, the Mana Rain turned into a torrential downpour, the sound of acidic water hitting the warehouse roof like thousands of tiny hammers.

She looked at Aryan. He looked fragile, yet the aura he had displayed moments ago while killing the Rank B Stalker was anything but weak. He was a Level 3 now, a growth rate that was fundamentally impossible according to the laws of the world.

"Who are you really, Aryan?" Zoya whispered. She felt a sudden urge to burn the notebook, but her warrior instincts stopped her. If Aryan knew she was going to betray him, it meant he had seen a future where she did. But why?

Suddenly, the Archive's holographic interface flickered back to life, hovering over Aryan's chest.

Aryan's body arched, his back snapping off the cot as a surge of mana forced its way into his damaged circuits. He wasn't just healing anymore; the Archive was rebuilding him into something that could withstand the coming apocalypse.

"Zoya... don't... don't go to the Northern Safe Zone," Aryan's voice broke the silence. He was awake again, but his eyes were clear, the silver glow replaced by a deep, pained exhaustion.

Zoya stepped back, hiding the notebook behind her. "You're awake. And how do you know about the Northern Safe Zone? That's where the Guild is supposed to regroup."

Aryan struggled to sit up, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "The Guild... the 'Azure Dawn'... they aren't regrouping to save people, Zoya. They're regrouping to sacrifice them."

Zoya felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath her. Azure Dawn was her family, the people who had trained her. "You're lying. We swear an oath—"

"An oath to the gods of the higher realms," Aryan interrupted, his voice gaining strength as the 5% recovery stabilized his heart. "The ones who sent that Stalker to kill me. They need 'Mana Batteries' to keep the Gates open. The Safe Zones are just pens for the cattle."

He pointed to the notebook in her hand. "You saw it, didn't you? My note about today."

Zoya slowly brought the book forward. "February 14, 2026. Betrayal. Next to my name. Aryan, I saved your life! I brought you here!"

Aryan looked at her with a sadness that made her heart ache. "In the original timeline, Zoya... on this very night, you were forced to make a choice. The Guild Leader, Commander Kael, took your younger brother hostage. He told you that if you didn't bring me to him—the Librarian with the keys to the Archive—he would let your brother turn into a Ghoul."

Zoya's face went pale. "My brother... he's at the Academy. He's safe."

"He's not," Aryan said, his eyes flashing with the cold light of the Archive. "The Academy fell twenty minutes ago. Check the radio frequency 104.5."

With trembling hands, Zoya tuned the radio. Through the noise, a familiar voice cried out—a young boy's voice. "Sister! Help! They're taking us to the North! They say it's for the 'Purification'—"

The signal cut off.

Zoya's spear erupted in flames, the heat so intense that the medical equipment nearby began to melt. "KAEL!" she screamed, her Rank A mana uncontrolled.

"Wait!" Aryan grabbed her arm. The touch was light, but his 5% recovery allowed him to channel a neutralizing frequency from the Archive. The flames died down. "If you go now, you'll walk into a trap. Kael isn't just a Rank A hero anymore. He has made a contract with a Demon Duke. He's waiting for you to bring me."

"Then what do I do?" Zoya sobbed, the fierce 'Crimson Valkyrie' now just a terrified sister.

Aryan stood up, his legs shaking but holding firm. The level-up had increased his stats, and his 'Librarian's Gaze' was now scanning the entire bunker.

"We don't go as prisoners," Aryan said, a dark smile playing on his lips. "We go as the executioners. But first, I need you to do something for me. Something that will truly make you a 'traitor' in their eyes."

He reached into the void of the Archive and pulled out a jagged, black crystal—a 'Calamity Core' taken from the Lich King.

"Eat this," Aryan commanded.

Zoya stared at the core. To consume a Calamity Core without a high-level priest was suicide. It would either turn her into a monster or explode her mana heart.

"You want me to die?" she whispered.

"No," Aryan replied. "I want you to evolve. The Crimson Valkyrie was a title given to you by the Guild to limit your potential. I will give you your true bloodline: The Blood-Soaked Empress."

Outside, the thumping sound returned. But it wasn't one heart. It was dozens. The Stalker's death had alerted the pack. The warehouse was surrounded.

Aryan looked at the blast door, then at the notification blinking in his vision.

[New Quest: The Empress's Awakening.]

[Objective: Protect Zoya during the Bloodline Evolution.]

[Time Remaining: 10 Minutes.]

[Reward: 10,000 EXP, Archive Sync +2%.]

"They're here," Aryan said, picking up the glass shard from earlier, which now glowed with a permanent silver edge. "Zoya, if you trust me—if you want to save your brother—swallow the core. I'll handle the rest."

As Zoya closed her eyes and pressed the freezing black crystal to her lips, the bunker door exploded inward.

A wave of shadow-beasts poured in, their red eyes fixed on Aryan. But Aryan didn't look afraid. He stood in front of the meditating Zoya, his level-up points already invested into Agility and Intelligence.

"Archive," Aryan whispered, his voice resonating with power. "Initialize 'Librarian's Territory'. No one touches her."

[Warning: Critical Mana Usage! Sync falling to 4.5%!]

Aryan spat out a mouthful of blood but didn't move. He looked at the lead shadow-beast and crooked his finger. "Come. I have a lot of books to fill tonight, and I need a lot of ink."

But as he prepared to fight, he noticed something on the monitor of the fallout shelter. A drone was hovering outside, its camera focused right on him. And on the side of the drone was a logo he recognized from his previous life—a logo of a corporation that shouldn't exist for another five years.

The betrayal wasn't just coming from the Guild. The entire world was a stage, and the director was finally showing himself.
